Give more critique to help others improve

~mickdoesclick:iconmickdoesclick: reports, September 13, 2007
More and more I see people who give really short replies to deviations. Id like to see some more critique to help people improve...

What?
Well, people who reply with "very good!", "love it!", "nice colors" or any other very short reply. But worse then a short reply... a reply that is only super positive.
Of course there is ';pefect' art, but most of the times there is room for improvement, if there is... then tell them!
Giving critique isnt evil, on the contrary, it helps people to improve since you show them what they can do better next time. They will learn from it!

How?
So, how can I give critique in a good way? Its called constructive criticism.
A nice description of constructive criticism:
Constructive criticism (often shortened to 'CC' or 'concrit';) is the process of offering valid and well-reasoned opinions about the work of others, usually involving both positive and negative comments, in a friendly manner. This kind of criticism is often a valuable tool in raising and maintaining performance standards.

Because of the overuse of negative, nagging criticism, some people become defensive even when receiving constructive criticism given in a spirit of good will. Constructive criticism is more likely to be accepted if the criticism is focused on the recipient's work or behavior. That is, personality issues must be avoided as much as is possible.

So if you know someone on dA in reallife aswell, look at the work as if you dont, even if he or she is afriend of you (and normally you might have said something like "nice work! I like it!".

Back to the 'how'. As we read before, you say something you like, and something you dont about the deviation. Its that simple! ;)

What do you think?
Am I the only one who thinks we should give more critique? Or do you to?
Please reply what you think, let me know if you do it aswell, or will do it from now on.
We are all here to show our work, and to learn from others and thus improve. This would help us improve and keep us focussed :)

you're absolutely right, that was also the reason why i left dA.

i like to receive critique, i mean if you want to become better, you just need it.

it's also good to give critique, cause if you see 'bad' things in shots of others, you will pay more attention to those points in your own shots too.
the only thing is that, when i dont give a positive comment, the person is immediately offended. i think it's really weak. next time i just dont care if they hate me when i say i dont like it that much (with a reason! it's stupid if you say you like/dislike something without saying why.)

i can see your point. and i absulety agree. but you see, dA became more a website, to collect nice pictures on your acount . to become the best one on the site. it because more like a souvenirshop and contest.and people dont put their time in giving critics. its not good, because agorance will trade up when you want to help the person by gving critic, because they think their stuff is the best. i like critics and comment about what i do wrong and what i do good, because i can learn from it. so i found a dutch website (dfoto.nl). these person do that, but the prob is there, they only give you negative comments. so im scared if people on dA give yu critics, i hope it wont be like on the dfoto.nl website. fuck that website :P

I completely agree. Recently I've seen a huge influx in my devWatchers, but oddly enough the rate of comments on my pictures has dropped.

Just as plain courtesy I almost never fav a picture without leaving a comment on the picture.
The only time I wont leave a comment is when I see the artist says he doesn't want critiques. That to me sounds like the artist just wants praise.

Some people don't add comments, because they are lazy, and some because they aren't artists. There are members of DA that all they do is fav art they like and don't make any. How is a non-artist going to give a critique other then, "Looks Good!" or "Awesome!".
Other's don't seem to post comments, because they don't think the artist will ever read it or reply. So they don't bother.

I still see it a matter of courtesy. If you have a picture leave a comment. Just talk about what you like about the picture. If you like the picture then you should at least show your appreciation with a comment.

Thanks for replying.

Yeh. People with lots of pageviews/people watching them instantly get 100 fav's without a single comment. So when you do give critique they dont reply, or, and thats worse, is that others say "dont listen to him".
Well, thats their loss really.

yeh, Im member on a forum like that (www.dutchphotozone.nl) they are also very much addicted to the 'rules' of photography. Almost shallow.

But thats where constructive criticism comes in. You say something you like, as well as pointing out where there is room for improvement :)

Dito here. I never fav without commenting. There is always something to say about a photo (just talking photo's here. Other art is much harder for me ;)).

People who dont comment since they are lazy wont take the time to read criticism I think, so they wont improve (through comments at least) so that's just their loss.

I agree totally. I look for critique on any/every piece I put up, but don't get much, if any. I've also been posting a lot more cc on others' art lately in the hopes that some might start doing it as well.
~mickdoesclick:iconmickdoesclick: Sep 14, 2007, 5:33:25 AM
I suggest you check the forums, specially the thumb section. People are offering there to criticize your work! You will meet like-minded people there :)

Same thing here. I hope that by cc'ing others I will 'raise them properly', so they will start doing it aswell. Not much luck at that so far, but I keep doing it, and I will keep my eyes open at the thumb section :)
