World Mental Health Day - October 10th

~alcheme:iconalcheme: reports, 1d 8h ago
A friend of mine, *Flutterings came up with the idea to post a news story about mental illness in honor of the "World Mental Health Day", but with the day fast closing (at least in my time zone) and knowing she has a plethora of other things she is currently dealing with, I opted to post myself.

But my news article not withstanding, her original intent, and beautiful deviation commemorating the day and the essence should not be merely over looked, but seen and applauded ([link]).

Or perhaps NEITHER men NOR women. Are you a transexual, transgendered, bigendered, genderqueer or intersexed person? Or perhaps... Perhaps you're none of these. Maybe you're a straight ally, fighting for gay rights. Well, whatever you are... SHOUT IT OUT LOUD AND SHOW THAT YOU'RE PROUD!!!

Cyberbullying

~Myou-kun:iconMyou-kun: reports, September 21, 2007
The more we use the internet, and it becomes a daily tool in our life, the more encounters of this kind will come. Somebody dislikes your photos or your art.

What is bullying?

Is the act of intentionally causing unhappiness to others through verbal harassment, physical assault, or other more subtle methods of coercion such as manipulation. There is currently no legal definition of bullying.

-Wikipedia

What is cyberbullying?

Cyberbullying" is when a child, preteen or teen is tormented, threatened, harassed, humiliated, embarrassed or otherwise targeted by another child, preteen or teen using the Internet, interactive and digital technologies or mobile phones.

It has to have a minor on both sides, or at least have been instigated by a minor against another minor. Once adults become involved, it is plain and simple cyber-harassment or cyberstalking. Adult cyber-harassment or cyberstalking is NEVER called cyberbullying.

From the school yard to internet

This kind of harassment has now moved from the school yard to internet. And comes in various of forms. Even that some think they post their statement by saying : I do not like you or your art.

Can grow from these innocent words to something really serious. Deviantart crew remind you all to report such to their help desk and people can become banned or warned. But some of them get away because they are clever to write with no big words such as gender words or curses.

Bullying in my point of view is: Calling people stupid, less good, looking ugly , being fat, attacking them for spelling over and over again even saying their art is bad. Some even wrote and I quote:

" Dyslexia is not an excuse to spell bad.."

Some has such a bad dyslexia that even if they try spelling it turns out bad, and some spelling softwares can´t correct the word because it was spelled is such a strange way.

Some might not even know English, and then some attack them for spelling bad. Please have some heart and let those people learn in their own speed. Pushing these wont help.

Attacking verbal is as bad as getting a hit in the face, because wounds of sword heals by wounds of words stay.

If they state a phrase such as this : I think you are not a nice person and that your art is bad. I have seen people get away with this phrase because it is not harmful. It can´t hurt the person and is not offensive. But for some people it can be hurtful.

I think Deviantart does a good job cleaning out the bad guys , but some of the bad guys has been a member for many years and gained a love from many. When they attack and insult a fellow artists many of them get away.

When you add a forum thread you will be attacked by people who has nothing better to do then to attack other people and insult. The forum on Deviantart is the biggest cause of bullying because many does not get reported or even warned.

How do you avoid getting banned or attacked online?

* Do not go to attack yourself, people who bully loves that and will attack worse back.

* If you are sensitive and can´t handle people who are mean, avoid Deviantart forum, thats where all the bad guys/gals are.

* Do not write under a image or photo : It is so ugly, I am ugly. You maybe think so but thats trowing wood on fire.

Keep trying to report them, try to state why you are offended. 1 out of 10 gets the same answer often: We see nothing harmful in what he/she wrote.

Use blocking on your page to keep them away.

Actually, words hurt more than hits. It was proven that teasing and name-calling your school-days stays with you the rest of your life (I still feel it as well), but if you're pushed around and beat up those wounds eventually heal. It's the mental state that definitely is more life changing. I had anxiety and depression, probably due to the fact I was teased and bullied ever since I started school.

What if the adult is on the receiving end? I wonder because I know of many adults that still have timid personalities and can't stick up for themselves. I? I just ban them, report them if necessary, but a few friends that would just let themselves be pushed around having their emotions toyed or hurt.

What yaoumei said is true, words hurt more. I was hit a few times in elementary school, but it was the constant teasing that haunted me next 3 years after, because I became afraid of people. I've been suicidal since age 10, depressed sometimes I still suffer from minor setbacks. Im still so afraid that I do stuff the wrong way, like the way I walk and talk, because Im afraid people will think Im weird or smt.
Bullies ofter dont realise what the consequenses of their actions are, and that stinks.

Even if you tell someone you know, who's getting bullied, to stand up for themselves, some people just can't. Try to help them as much as you can.

How two people can add rejections to this is stupid and selfish. Because it is a serious subject you are taking up here. I get bullied and freezed out on Gaia online and on Sheezyart.

I find it odd that the person or group who established the definition of "cyberbullying" limit it to children and adolescents. It's rather misleading because bullying can involve harassment or stalking. Also, bullying can perpetuate into adulthood, especially in the working environment.

Some of the DA forums, especially the complaints forum can get pretty nasty, but that can apply to any forum you go. Online behavior lacks the inhibitions assciated with live interaction.

As for reporting, only the most severe cases will administrative action will be taken. Heated arguments and bluntly-expressed opposing viewpoints is not necessarily harrassment. There are way too many people for the staff to handle on dA in a timely manner; they don't want users to abuse the report feature over every little conflict. Thankfully dA provides measures to like hiding messages and blocking deviants. Othwerwise, regulation on the internet is very loose so caution is the best defense.

Really, I know a deviant that did this (Of course, I'm not going to say the name. I don't want to get flamed for this), but it really got me in such a rage that this deviant would do this.

But bullying is something in this world that we'll have to deal with unfortunately.

The expression you said are true, nonetheless. Words do hurt more than hits. And along that wounds of the swords heal, but wounds of words stay.

And caution can be the best defense in any situation. I agree with every SINGLE thing that you said. Thank you.

It is sad that the days of school yard bullying has lead to this. I've had to deal with insults from childish people on and off line for years. 10 years ago people started making fun of my art work just because I'm a lesbian and started posting nasty things about me online. It took 4 years before the group finally stopped harassing me. I mean it got so stupid to the point where someone posted.

"Kat Williams is a lesbian."

online thinking it would effect me. I think that was the one that stopped them because everyone commented about the fact that I'd brought my girlfriend to the last convention and was wearing a gay pride T-shirt even. When people sink that low as to bring up personal issues online it is rather sad.

I run two forums and tell kids the best thing is to keep to safer areas. Stick to the people you know and trust and do not post in open areas if you are not ready for harassment. I make my forums to allow gay youth a place to feel safe and I don't allow anyone to harass them. Not one bit.

Well, that is enough out of me.

Well said on this article.

Whatever we like it or not, we will have have to deal with cyberbullying whatever it's on dA or else where. And there will be more words that will be hurtful and disrespectful and the pageviews itself.
