Haikuwrimo - Fall '07

*MSJames:iconMSJames: reports, September 27, 2007
Starting October 1st, the 2nd annual haikuwrimo will begin!

The what?

Yes that’s right boys and girls, it’s almost time for the haikuwrimo once again!
*the crowd goes wild

For those of you who don’t know, the haikuwrimo was born in 2006 in response to the NaPoWriMo or National Poetry Writing Month. It was birthed because I wanted to try to spread the word about haiku, the unique form of Japanese verse that is probably one of the most misunderstood forms of poetry around today.

For more information on what I believe haiku truly is (as far as English haiku), please look at this small essay I wrote regarding the issue.

Anyway, back to the point, and that point is that the next haikuwrimo will start October 1st and run through October 31st (yes, that’s right Halloween!) and the crux of the haikuwrimo is to write a haiku a day for the whole month of October. Yeah, that’s right, I said it, write a haiku a day for 31 days straight. Sound simple? Well try it and see just how challenging it can be! But not only will it challenge you, hopefully it will open up the world in which you live, opening your eyes to all the wonderful beauty that we take for granted everyday!

If you want to participate, send me a NOTE and I’ll add you to my journal entry to kick off this great writing opportunity.

Just to wet you whistle and get you in the haiku mood, here’s a completion of last years participants and some of their best haiku!

Hope to see you there!
