A DA Art Book ?

*donaldsart:icondonaldsart: reports, September 29, 2007
Hi all

For those of you who already watch the :icongilad: journal you will know something of the talk about a DA Art Book.

Though delighted by the prospect initially I thought it was also somewhat questionable for various reasons. You may visit the findings (taken from a poll) in his latest journal [link]

Alternatively I have highlighted a few of them below:
(As taken from Gilad's Journal with his kind permission)

The General idea
The internet provides an easy access for users and watchers to see art in the community. However, looking at art over the computer screen doesn't always do it justice. We tend to give it short look. Gilad even conducted a poll in this regard - see the results here [link]

You also see a lot of work that is not really art, but more of a personal record, you see stolen work (that you don't even know is stolen)
The big print format (20*30 cm) allows for better impact and really provides depth to your work.
We can produce an yearly DA album with the best pieces in each DA category (say 5 pieces of each category) Since there are over 100 categories it will be very varied in art and point of view. We can even do different volumes for photography, traditional art, digital art, etc since they are generally very different for their target audience.

How to choose pieces?
What was evident from Gilad's poll was how to select pieces without offending users. His suggestion was the appointment of an art treasurer, as an editor & selector to the book (which is very common for art projects) or even a few art treasurers for the basic categories. They could give an outside look and choose based on their artistic point of view. Selection would need to be objective & quality driven.

Budget?
This is open to debate. It could be a community project. Each user that places work in the album pays a relative funding (and earnings later). It can also be funded by an investor, that can also do a big exhibition to follow the book. It can also be the DA site funding it to break the WWW boundaries and acclaim it's place in the Art world by targeting new audiences. It shouldn't be too expensive thinking about the huge amount of users. It can also be lucrative just thinking of how many people will be interested in it (just start with our family and friends)

-I would personally like to make a note in this regard. There are many times that I make reference to my gallery on DA to those outside of the community within the 'Art world' that know nothing to very little about DA. It's an unfortunate fact, but the Art world at large does not always fully recognise the talent represented in this community.
Taking our art out of the cyber realm & offering it in condensed printed annual that people could own - could see some dramatic results.

Enough said
Please feel free to post your own suggestions or concerns. With enough of a response - perhaps this can be put forward to the DA governing body.
We are this community - lets make this idea work for us
Get involved, talk to your friends, start a chat room...
Let's get the wheels turning

A small selection of work I would love to see printed:
(then again I'm not a curator - but I'm sure you get the idea)

I think this is a wonderful idea. The sheer amount of work on dA baffles me every day. To be featured in a book alongside other work would be an honour. I really hope this project comes to fruition! :aww:

And cheers for including my Hendrix portrait! :w00t:

I think that it would put a lot of the work here into the hands of interior designers, who would want prints, and would advertise DA to a whole new group of people. But I would have to be released through the bookstores, not just to DA people

A DA Art book could be a wonderful project, I'm sure we can find a lot of incredible works around here.

If we get a fair profit share, I think this project will be great.

btw thanks for featuring my wok

The idea is great but execution is impossible so I think it should be dropped. If any artist big or small doesn't have him or her in the book it would be offensive because art is art and artists are artists so you can't be partial. And art can not be judged on the same parameters. You can think something is great but I might think it is gross.

The idea is great but since DA is such a huge site the book would exclude many people with wonderful art.
