`SparrowSong on writing, critique and her passions

^lovetodeviate:iconlovetodeviate: reports, September 28
An interview with writer, critic (critiquer?), lit senior, `SparrowSong. Here are some tidbits:

“I like that my passions change. If nothing else, it gives me more to write about.”

“Everyone has heard the expression, ‘Give a man a fish, he eats for a day; teach a man to fish, he eats for a lifetime.’ If you don’t learn to critique, you will always be dependent on others to help you instead of being able to do it by yourself.”

“Art changes how we view the surface of the world to reveal truth or beauty—or both—underneath.”

Great Prose Exposed: WordCount Feature #5

*WordCount:iconWordCount: reports, October 2, 2007
Summer is coming to an end and school is back in session (if ever it was out!) for a good portion of the world. In order to welcome in autumn, WordCount's team has assembled an A+ selection of prose that we've no doubt you'll enjoy. So sit back and put off that homework just a little while more. We promise you won't regret it.

:resume: 100 words or less

:bulletblue: six words by =Itti

Fictional Perspectives: This text accomplishes in six words what some authors can't accomplish in six hundred pages.

:bulletblue: I-form HB Blast by =kaujot

Children's: A pithy take on a problem between the sexes.

:resume: 101-500 words

:bulletblue: to before we were born by *jonzoiplu

Fictional Life Stories: Some beliefs sustain us and others lead to our ruin. In war, it's difficult to recall which is which.

:bulletblue: Twenty Men by ~Lig

Science Fiction: This short piece has a very Wellsian feel, and its implications are only made stronger by the author's lack of intention in writing it.

:resume: 501-1,000 words

:bulletblue: Metro by ~perceptiontwin

Horror: A chilling look at what could happen if that big red button is pushed.

:bulletblue: A dime named Harry by ~raven8t8

Ironic Humor: In this piece, irony is taken to painful new levels in an effort to teach us all a lesson. Or, well--that's just our two cents.

:resume: 1,001-1,500 words

:bulletblue: what might be missing by ~ddddisaster

Fictional Life Stories: What would happen if your lover could steal your heart and keep it in a jat beside the bed?

Humor: A very Sienfield-esque tragedy with a series of embarrassing events made laughable by neuroses.

:resume: 1,501 - 3,000 Words

:bulletblue: The Act of Seeing by =kaujot

General Fiction: What can one man take and leave behind on a single train ride?

:bulletblue: The Origin of Evil by *LloydG

Essays: A complex and well-researched take on an age-old issue--with some very strong ties to mythos.

:resume: 3,001 - 5,000 Words

:bulletblue: Safe Word by *fallenidle

Fictional Perspectives: A touching, beautiful exploration into what it means to submit and what it means to dominate.

:bulletblue: Genetic(s) by ~are-bee-s

Fictional Life Stories: A new way to look at a very old topic, this explores a decision process balanced between life and death.

:resume: 5,001+ words

:bulletblue: Grim Penance by ~altruisticlies

General Fiction: An excellent pulp-fiction story that keeps your attention to the bitter end.

:pointr: King of Dragons, King of Men by ~patter

How do you choose between two lovers, when you deserve neither? Two knights, William and his foster brother Allen, are summoned to fight for their baron. William leaves behind his wife by an arranged marriage and enters a political game where the baron, the king and maybe the devil himself, each have their plans for him. On the eve of battle, William meets a being called Ahriman and is offered a chance to save Allen's life.but only at a great price. Although it tears him apart, William agrees to save Allen from his fate and begins a chain of events that offers him great treasures-the crown of the nation, a magical device that opens a door to a world of dragons and, rarest of all, the love of two good people-which he knows he does not deserve. Can the aid of the dragons put right the damage done? Warning: This book is an alternative romance with three people (two men and a woman) falling in love.

Available 30 October 2007 through Amazon.com and other distributors.

Meet Our Contributors: *Iscariot-Priest

*Iscariot-Priest has been a tremendous asset to the *WordCount team, lending his unique sense of humor and quiet dedication to his selections and always going above and beyond to find the very best that dA Prose has to offer. Outside of WordCount, *Iscariot-Priest keeps the community busy with thoughtful and encouraging commentary and critiques, and has recently finished a rather successful run of his first contest, which asked others to write the funniest six-word story.

Beyond that, *Iscariot-Priest is talented, too:

:bulletpurple: School irony (6 words)

Humor: Oh, those poor English teachers!

:bulletpurple: To the girl I hit (125 words)

Contest Fiction: What story can you tell in three sentences? What if it isn't your own?

:bulletpurple: QuickeProse 1: Dash of rain (307 words)

General Fiction: For anyone who's ever talked about the weather.

Wow! These are great!

I'll have to be honest -- I've never looked into dA Prose as much as I should. I found this article at the top of the News Page, though, and it sparked my interest (lol, it was the emote that caught my attention by the way. ;p Nicely done.).

I haven't been through all of them yet, but I like what I'm seeing. I look forward to seeing more, and going through your past submissions to get a feel for what you do. And keep posting those News Articles --- they really DO get read by random passing deviants every now and again. =D
