Today in 1990, a year after his death, Cincinnati's
Contemporary Arts Center and its director were acquitted of obscenity charges resulting from an exhibit of Robert Mapplethorpe's photographs.
It is important to remember anniversaries like these and to watch for continuing struggles in the art world, especially about censorship due to the perceived moralities or immoralities of a few. It affects all of us, not just artists.
In my opinion, Robert Mapplethorpe was to black and white nude photography and portraiture what Ansel Adams was to black and white landscape photography. His influences can be seen everywhere.
You can find more information about him at
The Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation web site.
