Agaisnt the New Underage Mature Content Policy

~Hyuga34:iconHyuga34: reports, October 4, 2007
If any minors or anyone else see this, please help me and spread the topic around. recently DA has made it so that if your birthday shows you are under 18, you cannot veiw mature deviations without clicking them. i considered changing accounts completely, but that would be an enormous job for anyone with deviations, watchers, and favorites. *stomps around* some deviations that have blood and stuff, and ones that have rly rly good artwork that have nudity are now going to get that many less views, because no one under 18 will bother to view them if they are on the front page, becasue they wont take the time to click their way past the grey censor. deviantart does have a large population of underage people, so they may get rid of this feature if the point is made by enough people.

Devious Comments

Mmm... Actually i think it's a good measure.

In theory if you're below 18 it's against the law to see those things.

And no offense, i'm not sure of whether people below 18 are really able to appreciate the quality of artistic nudes and the such. With all the hormones you just look at other things and leave offending comments in those deviations.

I'm saying this because of i've seen it, especially in some DDs.

well obviously, google has been sued many a time, yet they still have the same sort of option for mature content. if google can do it, why not deviant art? not all of us are purely driven by hormones, and i personally have seen incredibly well done pictures that are labeled mature content just for the reason that , say, an angel has no shirt on, and im sure that michael angelo did not paint the roof of the sistene chapel just for pornographic purposes, did he?

....don't talk such utter nonsense. DA is doing this to protect young members of the community and quite frankly under age members submitting nude style artwork should be frowned upon in the first place if thats what you are complaining about.
God help us all if having to make that one extra click to view a mature content deviation that is precisely not intended for under age viewers to see in the first place is all you have to worry over.

This also isn't news.. ranting and complaining about ridiculous things is what your journal is for... FAQ #687: What is news and what is not news?

Hey, hey... no need to use lame examples here.

What I'm saying is, not everyone is as mature as you are. Some people coming from the US actually find such images offensive. Yes, a angel showing her breasts. A mother might think that her dear 13 year old daughter should not see those things.

Now, you wouldn't want devArt getting sued by that mom, would you?

In my opinion, however, the bar IS set too high. People that are 16 or 17 are mature enough, in my opinion. But not for the US law. And you can't change that.

I agree with you.

Those deviations don't need the click/visit of a 13 year-old.

im sorry, but i wasnt talking about submitting artwork, just veiwing it, and also i wish i could edit this, but i cant, as i found out that you cant view the deviations at all, and that has upset me. as for the not rly news thing, your right, i didnt think about that, but quite frankly, i dont have many watchers, and im not going to be a snotty little brat about it and argue over a stupid point, but i just want to get that piont out, and while your at it, why not read my other comment on what irenukia had to say.

Why should those of us that are under the age of eighteen but have enough maturity to view something have to be restricted just because of assumptions? People who aren't logged on couldn't just click on the button, and honestly, I highly doubt there were huge amounts of complaints. I think that the warning is enough, and if they know they're taking a risk, take a risk, and are affected, they were warned, and could've read the comment! It's not like porn! And that warning IS enough, because those who didn't take the warning seriously and still are affected negatively (what little there probably are.......) shouldn't have to ruin it for the rest of us!

But I don't really see why you'd get disappointed, it's not like you're missing out a LOT. Maybe a few deviations, but nothing you would miss out by not logging in one day

And wow. Teachers tell you that one person can change the world? Well, if you're a president of something important, maybe. But don't fool yourself ;]
