Artist in Focus
`gas13
Please tell us a little about yourself, where you live and your art.
My name is Alexey Garkushin and I live in Krasnodar, to the south from Moscow. Since some people think Russia is a cold place where bears walk on the streets I will say it's October and it's +31'C now
How well are artists regarded in Russia today?
Hm. I suppose you are speaking of general artists, right? I'm not really sure as I'm not communicating with any general artists, most of my friends are pixel artists like myself. And when someone find out you are an artist working on a mobile games... It's a really big surprise. Most of people never think of how, where and who is making mobile games. And the fact that some of them made by the man next door makes you a hero of the day
How difficult is it to find work in Russia as an artist?
I don't really know as I was never looking for this kind of job. Working as a freelancer I'm used to have work finding me.
Is there a little you could tell us about living in Russia these days, it still seems a place of which very little is known.
Just a few weeks ago I was reading a blog entry [link] of Nine Inch Nails art director about his visit to Russia. Translated version was a joke of the day in Russia as it shows a lot of foreigners mistakes about our country.
Speaking of living in Russia I don't really know where to start. Probably the main problem since disintegration of USSR is a huge abyss between the most wealthy and poor, a contrast between poverty of villages and Chelsea owner Abramovich, for example. It happened when state property was bought for nothing. But wait a minute, I'm moving in a wrong direction, right? Who cares?
It's hard to tell something that make you wonder as I have never been abroad. I suppose city living in Russia doesn't differ too much from one in Europe or States.
If you didnt live in Russia, which country would you choose to live?
Sweden or Finland I think. They seem so calm.
How long have you been creating artworks?
Since 1997, 10 years now! Wow, surprised. Kinda jubilee
What got you started and did anyone in particular influence your work with PixelArt?
There was a contest at ZX-Spectrum (good old 8-bit computer) electronic magazine Adventurer where contestants had to pixel a splash screen. I decided to give it a try and suddenly noticed I like what I do.
Speaking of influence I'm trying to absorb the best from all the artists I know.
Do you have any formal training as an artist?
Nope. I was learning management in the university. 5 wasted years
What software program/s do you normally use for creating your PixelArt and animations?
Photoshop 7. And Gif Movie Gear for animations. Now that it is linked with Photoshop Image Ready is deleted.
How do you see the future of PixelArt?
I don't really know. Who could predict latest PixelArt revival linked with cell phones. I don't even dare to try.
Mobile phones are getting more and more powerful and content providers requesting more and more 3D games these days. But who knows. Maybe our children will play games on credit cards or something. It may take a while to make that cards support 3D
Note. Speaking of 3D I don't find it a good substitute but for some reason it's a measure of progress. Too bad. Instead of inventing new games they try to make more realistic environment. But could you be fooled? Most of recent games are clones with better gfx, more sound and so on. Thank god we have Japan with their GBA and Nintendo DS. Oh, that's far from question already...
Is there a particular subject more than others you enjoy creating and which do you prefer isometric pixelart or non isometric pixelart?
Well, speaking of non-commercial art I don't like working on sprites and sprite animations. Not really sure why but I find it boring. Probably I have enough of this in commercial games. But I like working on nonisometric scenes and isometric objects. You would note it checking my recent submissions
Can a person make a reasonable living making PixelArt for mobile phone games or would one need another job as well?
As I was starting my freelance career, I was also working as a webmaster/system administrator fulltime. As I was getting more requests than I had free time I decided to leave my job and for 3 recent years I'm a fulltime freelancer It's hard to determine "reasonable living", I think it depends on a person but I'm satisfied.
I suppose it would be harder to work like that in States or Europe where you have higher wages but also higher prices. Having good clients with lower Russian prices makes a good living here
What has been your best experience working in this field?
The greatest experience I had so far was working on a GBA title Rebel Star with an almighty Jullian Gallop, author of X-Com series, UFO, Laser Squad.
Have you had any work through displaying your artworks on deviantArt?
Sure, lot's of requests are starting with "I found your gallery at deviantart.com..." One of the leading mobile game developers, Gameloft was looking for artists at deviantart.com for example.
How did you find Osmi, your avatar?
It was a character for an online gotchi-fighters game developed by ~-black-eye-. He needed 3 animations of a character - idle, training and attacking. That's how Osmi animation was born. After the project was closed I decided to use it as an avatar and noted how many people were coming to my dA page just to say they like the character. That's how it turned to be my mascot.
Could you pick out 3 of your most favorite images from your gallery and explain why you particularly like them?

It is based on a child sketch found via Google. Unbelievable how inspiring that doodle could be. I got a picture I never would pixel myself. It was a great experience.

(Please download for full view)
I chose this one to illustrate how important it could be to learn other's work. Zoom in to see what I mean. They are all very different.

Osmi, a character described before. One of the very first pixel works of mine.
Is there one particular piece you like more than the others in your gallery?
Speaking of dA gallery, this one:

(Please press on thumb for full view)
I remember how it was inspired by this community. I felt I have to pixel something related and show up. Good old days
Do you have any advice for aspiring Pixel artists?
There's no advice for those who are really aspiring. They just don't need any.
If to speak of myself (not an advice, just my way) all I know I got from tutorials and learning from others art.
Do you have any future plans for diversifying your artwork?
Yep, it's not a future plans but more what I try in my free time - an airbrushing, anatomy and so on. Only recent pieces of mine were not based on any references and I'm starting to have fun with painting or pixeling from my head
Your Stamp Project [link] has done so well, do you have any plans for starting other projects?
No plans at the moment. Not sure if things like that could be planned by me. After PixelStamps idea came to mind it took me 3 days to start the project. Later I was just adding features. Design, html and php scripts was made in 1 day each.
Please pay a visit to `gas13s Gallery, there is some wonderful PixelArt to peruse including some great animations.

Might I suggest though, next time not to have it all in bold? Its very hard to know whos saying what.
Maybe your questions in bold. and the answers in italics or something. So it easy to read. Other then that its good
I love some of those thumbs at the bottom too hehe

If you look closely I did put the questions in Italics and left the answers plain type. I wasn't able to make it any clearer, I have no idea why bold wouldn't work.
Glad you liked the interview...I found `gas13's answers very interesting.
