Hi guys! Thank you for reading the comics and Cartoons Mini Newsletter. For previous issues please scroll to the bottom for a list.
Whats New
Just wanted to make sure people are aware that the news, AR updates, articles and information
I post is not necessarily relevant to Anime/Manga, nor do I intend them to be. Yes, manga are comics too, however they are a huge chunk of the industry and DA and because of that they have their own Gallery with their own directors. Please direct your enquiries regarding Anime/manga, be it the history, the galleries on DA, the industry terms, or whatever, to the anime/ manga gallery directors. They are much better equipped to help you with those questions than I am.
it's not that I don't love you guys, it's just not my area and there are people here for that very thing

For a change of pace this time I'm going to hand the floor over to =
Zorgia and let him explain the terms "Comix" and where it came from.
Why? Well because it was clear from my poll that I did that not many of you have a clue where that term came from or what it means. So I thought It would be fun to open the floor and let others share their wisdom.
COMIX

The term "Comix" comes from the underground movement of comic artists of the late 60's (1967 to be exact). Around this time the obvious decay and crisis of the north American society produced, as a logical consequence: Vietnam, the African-American movements, the hippies, the "sex freedom" and also, "comix".
The "comix" movement was lead mainly by Robert Crumb and Gilbert Shelton.
This comics were published in the underground press scene, dedicated to fight to defend drugs, sex and violence and to attack, with all brutality, police and the system.
The best examples of "Comix" are "The Freak Brothers" and "Fat Freddy's Cat" by Shelton, and "Mr. Natural" and "BoBoBolinski" by Crumb.
Something that might and can be considered the first sight of "Comix" is MAD magazine, from it's beginning up to 1955, when, pressured by the government (which COULDN'T take the critique), their founding member had to sell the magazine, which turned out to be the mediocre MAD we have now a days.
(This part is my personal opinion) The Comix scene lasts until the late 70's. Basically, Comix represent a movement of independent and underground comics artists that had something to say, in a sense that they opposed to the established regimen seeing it's flaws and attacked "where it hurts".
"Comix" these days are generally used (in a wrong way, even if i like to call independents as comix, it's not their true meaning) to define all the independent comics out there, from companies like Slabe Labor Graphics, Top Shelf (which to this date is the only one that actually uses the term "Comix" in what the publish), Fantagraphics, etc... basically, the more mature directed comicx.
Outside of the "Comix" definition, i've stumbled across some interesting definition that i actually like and might be worthy of let also know in a further newsletter. "Mainstream independents". I admit it sounds kinda weird, but it defines two independent companies: Image and Dark Horse. I like it because it indeed defines those two companies. Both of them are the most "powerful" (so to speak) independent companies out there, when you think of independent comics one comic of any of those companies pops as a first reference. And specially Dark Horse, because of the movie deals they've got over the years, but, as mainstream as they want to show these companies, what keeps them in the independent categories (and will keep them there for long) is that they haven't lost their spirit that created them in the first place: let the authors guide their comics and they'll guide it in the right way (OK, most comics might not be the greatest thing ever under this method, even some of them are real crap, but, they give the chance to small guys to get out there and get a chance).
Gallery News
Nothin' much yet, but soon, SOON!
Most of the time you are wondering why your image was moved to scraps.
Well you could have saved lots of time (yours and ours) if you ran to the FAQ first.
FAQ #239: What are scraps?
"Scraps, which are kept in the Scraps section of your user page, are incomplete or unrefined works that don't belong in your formal gallery. Things like sketches, quick snapshots, webcam pictures, and the like should be submitted to your scrapbook."
The key words there are "unrefined" and "incomplete". That means your WIP, lined paper doodles, poorly scanned or photographed comics and cartoons should be in your scraps gallery, not your formal gallery. This is so that your formal gallery and Deviantarts formal galleries are kept clean, and people can browse and find your best work. If people want to see doodles, sketches and work in progresses, they will look in scraps.
This is not a blow at your artistic skills at all! It's simply about how images are presented, the main gallery should be clean.
Okay?
Please use your scraps gallery and file help desk tickets maturely.
Sometimes we will move images to scraps if we are moving quite a few at once that all are miscats but go to different places or if your deviation belonged in more than one spot and I wanted to let you decide. If your image is not badly scanned, on lined paper, some Myspace photo of your cleavage and was moved and you you're still confused about where it should go, please file a help desk ticket.
If you find your work is getting moved a lot and you are wondering what you are doing wrong or where you should be posting, please feel free to note me. I am more than happy to help you understand the galleries and show you where to get the information you need for your future work.
I know some of the galleries are confusing right now, but they are getting cleaned up and streamlined one by one, so soon everything should be much more simple for you.
Thank you everyone for your patience, and please don't hesitate to ask if you have questions. That is why we are here.

This tutorial is how to removed lined paper lines and make your image clean and nice for your formal gallery. if you've had images moved to scraps for this reason, you may find this helpful.
If you have tutorials like these, please share so I can feature them.

I love ElfQuest. It was a huge part of my teenage years and the very reason why I take art as seriously as I do now.
