Art Consciousness: The Unknown Artist Feature

~duaith:iconduaith: reports, October 11, 2007
Dear beloved deviants and others to whom this may concern,

First and foremost, choosing which artists to feature was both a difficult and pleasant task. All of them were wonderful and admirable.
Thank you to all who have participated in making this article possible. Your success is my joy and I thank you for the inspiration you have offered.

Over the years I have viewed art as a way to express many different forms of ourselves: the emotional, the spiritual, the humorous, and the provocative. They can be filled with wit and anger, love and radiance; grief and joy. As I dug deeper into my artistic ventures I realized one important thing about our individual self – expression: art does not act to convey our separation. Instead it communicates on a higher level how unified we are. It is a window into our soul, the creativity that is our existence. With so much of the world encouraging us to focus on our outer reality, our inner selves are constantly inspiring us to communicate the language of our emotions. Art teaches, inspires, informs and provokes.

Some of us may believe that true artists are the skilled, the popular, and the well known. I am here to say that no, there is no such thing as a “true” artist. And if there were, qualities such as those are not what would be used to describe them.
We all naturally express ourselves in every area of our life. Thus, if there was such a thing as a “true” artist they are you and me. They are our soul; they are our emotions, our ideas, our experiences. Therefore we are all united; each one of us an artist with Life as our canvas.

The community of Deviantart is filled with many wonderful artists. But we can’t deny that the lack of support and attention can sometimes hinder or discourage our desire to share our artistic expression and sometimes even become a blockage to our inspiration. Sometimes we care more about the attention than we do the art itself. Sometimes our “Watchers” don’t actually watch us, they simply pretend to. Other times, an artist’s work is overlooked or disregarded.
I have been on Deviantart for three years with different accounts and various forms of expression. Always, I have encountered these experiences.

One day I decided that for once, instead of looking for support -- I would provide it. As I encountered artists who have shared their work and the meaning of art in their life, I became inspired and absolutely astonished at their brilliance.
These are artists who have been overlooked or have not been seen. I sincerely hope that as you discover each of their work, you too – like I did – will be inspired, enthralled and will be encouraged to be open to the beauty each and every one of these artists have to share.

So I ask that you judge not the skill of the artist, but open yourself up to their courage of delving deep into their dreams, rage, joy, remorse, loss, spirituality; humour, idealism, loneliness; their absolute genius and experience these with them.

As the great John Lennon sang, “you may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one. I hope some day you’ll join us and the world will be as one.”

With much gratitude and blessings,
Sheila Coliflores

Art Consciousness: The Unknown Artist Feature

"My art is an expression of my personality and a way to escape the mundane. It helps me survive the pitfalls in life and celebrate the highs. I create to share beauty and thought with others but in the end, my work is most importantly self-medicating and perhaps even a tad selfish."

*ImRazil
“My arts keeps me from becoming sane. It lets me look at the fun part of life and have a bit of humor. The inspiration is always from something else, but I tend to look at moments where I am a bit bored and am focused on some topic, at that point I tend to put my croc figure in that situation and that's how I get my drawings etc.“

*sadik18
“Art and especially photography always finds a way to remind me who I really am. It has always meant a lot to me because photos can symbolize anything and everything.”

~the-Abysmal
“Sometimes I feel as if the only thing really keeping me here (as in, keeping me alive) is a way to express all of the things I have in me - if I couldn't draw some of these extremely powerful emotions inside of my head I'd just fall apart or drown in all the things I experience and see around me, things that seem awful and sad and terrifying - real life.
Also, when drawing a person, it is like touching them; feeling the personality in them by a bit of shading here or the sadness in a gaze there.”

~chugglepuff
“Art is one of those things that's illogical and basically pointless, and that life would be terribly dull without.”

~ladyhawk
“My photography gives me a window through which I can show the world all the beauty that people tend to overlook.”

~mmmhh-kiwi
“Art and especially photography is one of the two things, through which I can express my emotions at least a bit. (The other thing is playing piano ;) )
When I'm happy with my life, you can see that in the pictures I take, but even more when I'm unhappy, photography is my way to find back into hope.”

=Berryness
“My art is my passion, is my stress relief. It completes me. I love God, my family and photography.”

*brAndkopf
“ Photography is a symbol for the human perfectionism. It shows things exactly like they are.... or not?
Do you see a garbage can like I do?”

~joeydraws
“My goal is to illustrate children's books based on the conservation of flora and fauna - teaching children about the environment is the best way to get a message across to the rest of the world... Art is my life. I have been drawing since 2 years of age.”

~austinboothphoto
“There are so many unique people, places and things on this planet and beyond. My photography is a way for me to share with others my awe for the world around us. I also like the sense of self-satisfaction when one of my photos turns out as good or better than I was hoping for.”

~CGNEWMAN
“Art is my outlet of expression of my true-self. From what types of pics i am taking at the time to the type of music I am listening to, is directly related to how my world is going that day.”

*dream-dealer
“Silencing the inner voices and trying to get to the otherside (even for the moment).”

~SSPirate
“I am inspired by mythology, history, fashion, and colour. I love to draw because it's relaxing, and important for me, spiritually. Drawings keeps me sane!”

~lokisb
“Art makes me numb and lets me explore the world, without having to question anything.”

~dturkel
“There's no way I could pin out in one to five sentences what inspires me or what art means to me. Everywhere I go I look for obscurity. I like to show people the other side of life and oddities that may be normal to others. I love the work of Warhol and Weegee as well as many other deviants on line.”

~danz-art
“I believe art can be another means of expressing one's personality.”

~BloodPromiser
“Art, especially photography, has a way of calming me down. It just . . . distracts me.”

~xDestin
“My work is mostly based off the silly things in my life. What else could a teenage girl embrace in her life? The most prized possessions and the fashion that can help express herself.”

=zero-rider

“Art to me is a personal way of distracting my self from life. Even though art is with me every moment I breathe, take a step, or think, it is a way to get away from reality, and makes my life a dream. Art has always been there for me, whenever I was in need going through all my troubles, problems, and obstacles in life, it has always been there waiting for me to participate. Whether it was drawing, coloring, painting, pastelling, singing, dancing, acting, taking photos, or playing in photoshop, it has always been here as an opportunity. I think if every time someone bleed in a fight they instead did something artistic (one of the things I just listed), this world would be a better, more peaceful, comfortable and forgiving place.”

=studpup
“The sort-of personal expression that comes from art, for me, is pretty much a necessity in life. I'm pretty varied, so that expression may not always be in any one media, but it needs to be there. For a while, I had kind-of given up on actually being creative in any practical way; that is to say that, though the creative ideas and juices were still flowing, I wasn't actively creating anything "artistic." A few years ago, my partner died and to try to help cope with that I started up with photography died and after another family member died, I returned to traditional art. I may still have a long way to go as an artist, but I don't think I could ever stop again - if only for my own sanity...”

~Netbug009
“Art is a fantastic blessing in my life. It's fun, can sometimes reach out, and I can express myself. Doing art makes me so happy, and i hope to reach others with it and I hope God wants to use it in his plan for me.”

~Dam0cles23
“Throughout my life, many things have come and gone, many things have changed. But one thing that has always stayed the same is my freedom of expression and obsessive desire to bring my creativity to life through words and visual expression. I will always continue to do so as long as I have eyes in my head, fingers on my hands, and a heart beating in my chest. My work is often controversial, sometimes inspirational, and always a reflection of my soul. I humbly invite you to enter "The Damnation..."

=woahhhitsamanda
“Ever since photography has been in my life, I have seen the world in such a different way. I appreciate everything.”

~EspenStoro
“To me, art is a way to express myself beyond words. Real art is more than pixels or colors, it connects with the viewer on a higher level.”

~Freestylegirlzz
“Art is my life it's the place for me to express myself..I still need a lot to learn but i try to put emotion in every capture that i take. So, the picture will tell the meaning itself. I found many inspiration around me, the biggest one is i found in artist on DA and flickr. They made me think it's not impossible to make really good art even if you are not a professional photographer.”

~nortagem
“Art is basically why I life. Without creating, live is void and meaningless to me.”

~j-hicks
“My art and all creative ideas that i get from day to day contribute greatly to my overall character .Its a great feeling to wake every day being able to express emotions with paint... ”

~dez0424
“I believe art is a way of telling stories and expressing sentiments.
Looking back at our own works, we see pieces of ourselves,
traces of each period reminds us the mental states we undergone.
I personally like the combination of Natural (Spontaneous) and Artificial (Manipulated) when it comes to art.
I often choose materials like nature, since such subjects shows its real self.
I capture images from real life, and play with it in different ways,
just like injecting my sentiments into a canvas to make it a painting which has life.
Art is always personal,
I create works to fill up my heart,
it is like some kind of healing.”

~Dawn42
“My art is something that comes to my mind in the everyday life,or while thinking about what happened that day/week/in the past or what may happen in future
i can be called a dreamer, i look at things from different sides.
Much of what i do is experimenting, but it often has a deeper meaning which is according to experiences i have made in my short life and to express my view, that hardly someone will see if i don't explain :)
art is a very important part in my life.”

~Dienices
“I have a poor memory, so I take lots of pictures to remember more clearly my experiences. By taking images that are visually emotive I hope to give myself and other people a sense not only of what I saw but of what I felt when I went through a particular experience or time, or when I saw something that had an effect on me. I enjoy life and photography so much that I want other people to aspire to enjoy every aspect of living as much as I do, or at least to be encouraged to try something new. Therefore these thumbs are not necessarily my most popular, but they are the ones that invoke the best feelings in me.”

~afiqqq
“well art has not been in my life for a long time. let me be frank, i thought it was just really pretentious crap when i was younger. when i got older, i found that art kept me really calm, it gave me a sense that someone was always watching over me. i am still finding my style of art, and hopefully i will find it soon.

like the time it took for me to appreciate art, it will take the same amount of time, for me to find myself; through art.”

~inthens
“Art for me is the freedom to give form to the shapes in my mind and to create images of how I view beauty”

~Lollipop85
“Art (in particular making photos and writing) for me is almost everything. It cheers me up if I'm sad, it calms me...
It makes me feel complete.”

*Aurasama
“Art is, personally, one the greatest gifts in my life. It's simply the best way for me to express my feelings and thoughts. I have a speech defect and even thought it's not such a big thing, it stops me from expressing myself the way I want to (because I can't produce certain sounds, and messing up your words all the time is really humiliating), so I have always poured my feelings to my art. Letting people look at my art makes me sometimes feel vulnerable because it's like I had bared my heart for someone, but when someone understands my feelings by just looking at my works, it reminds me there are people who care. I guess it kind of keeps me sane, too.”

~Caramelie
“Art is something that's always there for me.”

~jabmano
“My biggest passion in the area of art is poetry and song (cause what is a song but merely a poem with a melody and rhythm?). It allows me to express myself in ways that everyday words cannot. It also gives me joy in writing something that I know others may enjoy reading. It gives me a sense of self-accomplishment.”

=OmahaNebraska
“Art has been very therapeutic for me. I have found a very real and tangible way of expressing myself and also found a great companion on the way. Art is one of those things that doesn't leave you, and if you are vigilant you can see it everywhere. It also has pushed me into going back to school so that I can learn more and hopefully apply it to my art in the future.”
