DENYING THE POVERTY DRAFT-THE SOLDIER AS A SYMBOL

=whitetrashpalace:iconwhitetrashpalace: reports, 16h 58m ago
The Poverty Draft, Politics, Symbols, and the inconvenience of being human.

Even in times of war, the Soldier as an individual is of no consequence. The Soldier is a symbol, a simple pawn in a culture war. The Soldier is either a villain, or a Hero. The Soldier always serves for the honor of his country, not his paycheck. The Soldier is faithful, as there are 'no atheists in the trenches'. The Soldier is Combat Arms. The Soldier is male, he married a young white girl, and he has a baby on the way, whom he has never met.

The Soldier is a romantic ideal.

A Feminist Perspective on Questionable Images

~sick-snowangel:iconsick-snowangel: reports, July 1
Sex and sexuality in art are some of my favorite things, and certainly sometimes arousal is part of this, but more importantly, it is FAR MORE than about simple arousal, as porn is. One of my deviantart friends, :iconcypherthepanicartist: , said that art of a sexual nature can “ provoke thoughts about our dreams, fears, desires, and place in the world"...yes! Well done art that deals with sex exposes the soul of the subject or act in question, not just the naughty bits. I feel that any kind of work on this site that looks at sexuality in a thoughtful or artistic or critical or celebratory, etc. way is certainly appropriate content for an art site, because, of course, this work is actually ART.

Graffiti: Art or Vandalism?

~jjankk:iconjjankk: reports, 2d 22h ago
This is an extremely old article from 2005 but I found it interesting.
It explains how some graffiti artists began to sell their art for money. There are people in the world who think that graffiti is art and not vandalism and other who feel the opposite way. I feel like graffiti is a work of art and should not be banned or should not be against the law. Even though I consider graffiti art I don't think it should be sold to galleries and to people. I think graffiti was meant for the streets and that's where it should stay. What's your opinion on this topic?

Who asked for censorship?

~kevind23:iconkevind23: reports, October 12, 2007
Please note: This is not by me. This is by my good friend ~ChiObsidian who seems to be having trouble submitting news.

Recently, I'm not sure exactly when, anyone under 18 is no longer allowed to view things under 'mature content'. Before this change, anyone had the option to turn the content filler off and on, which was a very good idea, as some people don't want to see mature content. I myself am 16, and think myself quite mature enough to view the content. It also kills me to know that some of my art can't be viewed by my friends or even myself because of this new rule, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Now I can understand why this might be a good idea, and sure could cover a lot of shady spots for DA to make sure to cover (in case someone was sue-happy). But the use of a mature content filler for guests, and the option to turn it on for users was perfectly fine. The precaution is understandable, but can't the age limit be lowered? Think about it. People my age pretty much know the human anatomy well enough to not be wretched in disgust or horror if we see it and, if we do, we could always block it. But we should have the CHOICE. Such works of art should not go unseen, and I'm not just talking about nude art. A lot of pieces of poetry, or potentially 'disturbing' art is too good to be covered by the horrid circle.

DA, I urge you to reconsider this drastic change. Anyone who agrees ought to say so here.

Since you already know where the answer are, and know there are multiple news articles, why post one more to keep fueling the side of it that doesn't show the point of it which was to get the community discussing it to make up a filter system that everyone wants?

Who asked for censorship? The ARTISTS OF DA.

Many people were getting frustrated by filthy comments being left on deviations marked clearly as mature content and yet the audience wasn't mature enough to post a comment worthy of anything more than deleting out of existance. Our stock photographers get insane numbers of people sending dirty comments - and these people are 13, 15 and/or 17 years old! Anyone who submits specific art is open to these kinds of comments and receive very intrusive, dirty notes as well.

Believe me, the artists of DA have needed this for a while.

Yes, it sucks the way it was implemented, but at the same time, there was reasoning behind it.

Blocking minors from viewing mature content is not "censorship."
~anarcrow:iconanarcrow: Oct 13, 2007, 12:04:41 PM
then what is it?

Let me ask you this first. Do minors have the same rights as adults? For something to be censored that assumes people have the "right" to see it in the first place. And since the people in question are namely minors the tag of censorship does not apply.
~47223:icon47223: Oct 13, 2007, 2:19:10 PM
It is possible to be over the age of 18 and still leave a senseless, dirty comment.

~anarcrow:iconanarcrow: Oct 13, 2007, 3:56:19 PM
no minors do not have the same rights, but the US government does not say that minors are not allowed to view art referencing things suhc as sex, murder, guns, and gayness [and i mean literally, gay people, not stupidness]
however, i am sure that the age at which someone is an adult is legally different in all places in the world. if this change only affects the US, then you are 100% correct. i myself do not exactly know the correct usage of censorship, which is why i asked in the first place. however, i do know that in some countries, people are given the rights of an adult at a younger age. i cannot give you exact names of countries, but if u like i can looks them up :) [sorry if i came off as rude i didn't mean to, i never looked up the definition of censorship haha]
