Orphan Works, A Response from the Creator.

=Joshi38:iconJoshi38: reports, April 13
There has been a lot of controversy over the proposed Orphan Works Bill, concerning the fears of artists who believe, with inception of the Bill, their art may be used freely and legally without consent of themselves, the copyright holder.

I emailed James Boyle, co creator of the Bill to address these issues and clarify the mistakes certain bloggers have made in interpreting the Bill.

Get Instant Access to a New York Publisher

~bookauthor:iconbookauthor: reports, May 9
When signing a book contract with a traditional New York Publisher the author loses control of the book’s content and cover design as well as the rights to the book. The author typically earns less than 10 per cent of the sale, which translates to less than one dollar per book sold. If the author hires an agent, the profit margin is less, because the agent’s fee is 10 (and sometimes 15) per cent of the author’s share of the profit. Margaret Merrill tapped into a system that provides a complete authoring and business development system with instant access to a New York Publisher. For more information, visit [link].

Tychtastic vol. 5

=chakrabird:iconchakrabird: reports, Oct 13, 2007
Hi all dA tych lovers and welcome to the latest issue of Tychtastic. :-)

Contest results

I want to start today by announcing the winners of The Tychtastic Time Contest where the challenge was to create a tych over the theme "Time". The judges were: :iconchakrabird: :iconkumiko-mckee: :iconaglayan-agac:

We had a lot of great entries and all judges want to say a big thank you to all contestants. :-) We judged on a set of criteria based on creativity, quality, composition, conception of theme and overall impression.

Aaaaand the winners are

1st place and winner of a 1 year subscription and a print of choice (max. 35 USD) is:

by =oblaky with a total of 129 points.

*aglayan-agac says about this piece:

Firstly, I would like to thank each contestant for their valuable contribution. It was really a nice and exciting experience to be a part of this contest.

Oblaky's work is one of those which impressed me a lot in terms of picture quality, creativity and composition; and it is obviously one of those in which the theme of the contest "time" has been executed in the best way. What impressed me most in this diptych is the paradox it creates about time. Generally, we think that time is wearing everything out; nothing can resist against it; it is continuously runs and runs; and it is impossible to stop it. In this diptych, the feeling I get is that the painter is so involved in his work that he is independent of everything while he is busy with his work, including the concept of time. Time seems to have been stopped for him.

Another point is that while he is busy with his painting, time is still running of course; but what he does is to create something in which the time has been frozen. While his time is still running out, he is picturing a frozen moment in time; and what he creates will resist against time for years and years. In the course of this creation, he is getting old each moment; but what he creates will never get old; will remain the same even after the death of the painter, even a hundred years later.

Congratulations Oblaky! Good execution of concept, great harmony, wonderful colors, a meaningful diptych, and a refined artistic taste.

2nd place and winner of a 6 month subscription is:

by *waterspirirtjess with a total of 117 points

=chakrabird says:

"Broken Time" is a piece that gives an intriguing and amazing overall impression. Not only does it consists of clearly two different pieces but still there's harmony between the pieces and it creates the impression of one whole image and one whole story. It succeeds in creating a slightly dark fantasy/dreamy quality, with nightmarish hints of being lost not only in space but also in time, of being stuck in a moment of time and longing.

The image makes you curious as to what is going on, makes you guessing and wondering and for me there is several layers of interpretation. Is it mother and daughter who are separated, finding themselves in different worlds and gliding apart as time passes? Or is it the longing of the child for growing up and finding itself in another more exciting world and likewise the adult longing back for the lost and less complicated time of childhood? Did time break for them at some point and they will never be able to find each other or themselves again?

*waterspirirtjess impresses with her creative take on time and also her creative use of stock. To enhance the feeling of being a diptych it could be considered if the hand of the child should stay totally within the frame of the childs panel instead of reaching over into the other panel. Still the artist successfully presents an atmospheric diptych full of fantasy and longing to take a leap in time.

3rd place and winner of a 3 month subscription is:

by *virgo-e with a total of 115 points

*Kumiko-McKee says about this entry:

“Moments from time” by Virgo-e is combination of old photographs of a lady presented using a double triptych (or polyptych). Virgo-e used a girl as the subject and represents her in three different stages of her life as a triptych and the differences between the ages represent “Time”. There is a stream of time between the little girl becoming a young girl, and a young girl to a woman. As time passes the girl’s fashion changes to reflect the preference at the time and age. Some qualities in the composition help to unify all the pieces in a very elegant way.

I like how the size of the panels relate to her body size and age--as she grows up, the size of the panels get bigger, which I think is a good choice and better than creating them in all the same size. Also, I like how Virgo-e organized all of the pieces to make them look unified and balanced as a polyptych; placing them with different sizes adds variation. Repetition of the shapes helps unify them at the same time as well as the frames with flowers in the corners of each piece. Virgo-e doubled the triptych to create a polyptych making a mirror image of first triptych, which creates a symmetric balance. It’s an elegant composition that helps organize the piece and enhance the subject matter.

The grown-up woman wears art deco style and fashion hinting at a time around the 1920’s. The fashion and quality of the photo with nostalgic elements represent the good old time. However, I think that a sepia color rather than black and white may have worked better since sepia is the color of antique photos. Sepia would also help bring out the quality being an old image more and provide a warmth to the nostalgically atmosphere. Overall, it is a very nice piece which successfully expresses the feeling of “Time”.

 BRAVO
You folks made well rounded choices for this theme . I really appreciate the in-depth explainations as to why these images represented the theme.
Well thought out and expressed. And I am so in agreement.
I went back yesterday to see the images---and took a good look at the second one--'broken time.' I have this wierd thing about stock images, perhaps based on a lack of understanding them, so I overlooked it.
When really considering what was being said, and the fluidity of the manipulation, it became an instant fav.
Thank you for this--its was fun.
Now on to the next theme...
hmmmm...
