Street photography in it self is quite confusing.. I mean, signs, lights, cars, etc.. They are all on the street, so they are street right?
Wrong.
Street is a little more complex, and back in the beginning was given an unfortunate name that many people dont understand.
Street photography is a type of documentary photography that usually features
people in candid situations in public places such as streets, parks, beaches, malls, political conventions, and other settings.
A few examples of street:

The subject is obviously aware of the camera in his face, but the difference between this being street, or being a portrait, is the way the subject interacts with the scene. It is not posed, not rehearsed, and =
MyPrivateParty's subject has just be chance, come down the street, not expecting to be photographed.

felixlu Is a master of street photography, often capturing some of the most unique, and amazing street shots this site has ever seen. His approach is amazing, with due care paid to composition, but also to defining the moment. As opposed to taking a portrait of the man, he took in a moment of life. A portrait of life, if you will.

thefinger One of my newest watched street photographers shows again that everyday life is one of the basics of street photography.

Treamus Perhaps one of the most under appreciated street photogs on dA, Treamus takes candid and runs with it, his perception of the genre makes for many fantastic frames.
Being invisible..:
I have found the invisibility technique to bring forth some of the most interesting candid shots without the subjects knowledge.
I myself can count the times i have been 'caught' on one hand. Three times, out of all the street shooting i have done, has my subject looked directly into the lens while i took the picture.

From within 10-15 feet:

It is said that Henri Cartier-Bresson would wrap a large handkerchief around his camera and pretend to be blowing his nose while he took the picture, or would wrap the camera's body in black tape.

I started this article because of the above link, the deviantART street gallery. Most of the time, about 10% is " True Street " While the rest belongs in other catagories.
Such as..

Two prime examples of deviations belonging in Street Art / Graffiti

An example of Architecture> Exterior, and City Scapes. Respectively.

Two images that would both fit in Photojournalism, as described below..

Finally, out of 120 images at the time of writing this article, there were about 8 Street shots correctly placed in the street gallery.

Shots like this however, fit into the City life, or Transportation galleries.
I hope this has been informative, and will inspire some of you to go out and shoot street, AND report miscategorized images in the street gallery whenever you have time.
Below is an informative bit about Photojournalism.
BEGIN PHOTOJOURNALISM, by =estudio
Here's why I've been getting very very icky lately over what I'm seeing under the Photojournalism category of deviantart, but first...
The Photojournalism genre in deviantArt is sub categorized by the followings: Concerts & Musicians, Documentary/Editorial, Military, Misc., Natural Events, People, Performing Arts, Places, Political, Public Gatherings & Events, Sports, and Weddings. When one submits to said category, there's a small button below the submitting window called Gallery Info, which puts in detail what said sub category is about. However, for the entirety of Photojournalism itself, dA categorizes it as such:
Gallery Info: Photojournalism
Photography intended to describe or document in pictures the events of individuals, groups of people, governments, history, and so on. Photojournalism gives us newsworthy photographs wherein the primary motivation is to recount a story not assist a story, the photographer never disturbing the natural events in the scene."
Ok, key operative word? "Newsworthy". Does it say "myspace-y" or "facebook-ish"? Does it scream "snapshot"? Now, click on the Seach Art bar on your deviantArt page, and type photojournalism. Let's seeee... How many of the pictures you see there are actually "Newsworthy"?? Here's some samples:
Newsworthy:
Not so much:
...need I say more?
Miscats will never gonna end if something like this happen aaaalll the time. Helping these particular deviation change to the right categories only help these particular individuals only. What about the other masses? Those who are itching to 'use' the Photojournalism genre because they think it's "photojournalism" without understanding the real context of it? All I'm hoping (as well as those who truly wants to learn more of "Newsworthy" photojournalism) that people will learn to READ the subcat's Gallery Info before they submit their supposed 'art'.
To quote ^KevLewis:
A thousand report violations takes a minimum of 4,000 mouse clicks. A thousand report desk cases cleared takes a minimum of 10,000 mouse clicks. That's 14,000 unnecessary mouse clicks because some deviants can't be bothered to submit their images correctly.
Please think of our Mice when you submit your work.

Horribly intrusive watermarks are tacky. If you're concerned about people stealing your photos, don't post them on the internet.
Photography is the simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event. (HCB)
