DENYING THE POVERTY DRAFT-THE SOLDIER AS A SYMBOL

=whitetrashpalace:iconwhitetrashpalace: reports, July 9
The Poverty Draft, Politics, Symbols, and the inconvenience of being human.

Even in times of war, the Soldier as an individual is of no consequence. The Soldier is a symbol, a simple pawn in a culture war. The Soldier is either a villain, or a Hero. The Soldier always serves for the honor of his country, not his paycheck. The Soldier is faithful, as there are 'no atheists in the trenches'. The Soldier is Combat Arms. The Soldier is male, he married a young white girl, and he has a baby on the way, whom he has never met.

The Soldier is a romantic ideal.

Make it easier for the Gallery Directors!

~foudroyant:iconfoudroyant: reports, October 19, 2007
Few days ago one of my celebrity portraits was moved from Portraits & Figures to scraps. I had no clue why the staff of deviantArt did that and the FAQ didn't answer my question either, so I contacted the help desk and after a few days I got an answer which first seemed really strange to me.

It said in the message that it was moved to scraps, so I could move it to the more proper category which is Fan Art. This didn't, however, answer my question why it was moved and I was even more puzzled, because almost every portrait artist has their celebrity portraits in Portraits & Figures. So asking why mine was any different from the others I sent a reply and I got an answer:

"I realize that there's a lot of drawing in portraits of famous people that also need to be moved, and it seems like most of your gallery fits with that. It was moved to fan art - tv/movies because she's an actress, regardless of her being in a role in your drawing or not."

I think there are others too who didn't have a clue our portraits (drawings/paintings!) of any kind of famous people whether they're actual actors/actresses or them in one of their roles or singers, should be submitted to the Fan Art section.

To make it easier for the Gallery Directors, it would be nice if all of us portrait artists (both traditional and digital) could move our celebrity portraits under Fan Art. :)

The type of portrait drawings/paintings that belong there:
- All celebrity portraits
- Portraits of Movie&Tv characters

Wow, I didn't know that actors/actresses, whether they're drawn in their role or not, belong in Fan Art. I'm going to move my stuff to the proper category too! Thanks for writing this Sini!

well, that message back is weird!
So what if its from a photo or whatever, its a drawing! Not like it was just copied from the internet and posted it was changed!
Putting them to fan art is good.
Thats where they should be!
Yer.

However I am confused to see a good number of prints, some dating back to 2004, in the shop that are simply portraits of celebrities. Has the policy changed or is it random?

That felt weird to me too, but this is the information I was given when I asked.
I think the policy must've changed when they made some changes to the categories few months back.

I put my celeb portraits to portraits and figures, because everyone else had theirs there.
And all my celebrity portraits were moved by an admin, so this should be correct.

I asked the gallery director if it would be of any help that I wrote a journal about this and he said that it would be greatly appreciated. Then Michelle suggested that I should write a news article so more people would know about this and so I did.

Portraits of famous people, I think, are allowed as prints as long as they're not characters from movies, since those are the property of whoever made the story.
