Vexelicious: The Features #15

^Jules1983:iconJules1983: reports, 1d 12h ago
This is the fifteenth Vexelicious feature article. As the name suggests, this article will be all about vexels. It is divided into three parts: DD's given in May and April, Vexels uploaded in May and April, and Themed Vexels.

What a Vexel Is: The Official dA Definition

^Jules1983:iconJules1983: reports, July 7
Influenced by recent dispute, it has been decided that it is time to make a solidified definition of what a vexel is by deviantART's terms. Please understand that this definition, and the rules along with it, are not made up from a few of the gallery moderator's thoughts, but built from the foundation of what the creator's words on 'vexel' were, and what the majority of the vexel community of deviantART has come to accept as a vexel. These rules are solid, final, and most-likely will not be faltered.

Artist Relations: Did You Know?

`MistressWit:iconMistressWit: reports, October 23, 2007

Artist Relations - Putting unity into the community

Welcome to the Artist Relations Teams Did You Knows!! This will be a weekly article that the AR team will use to share tid bits of information with you. From miscat trends we are seeing, to little known facts, Artist Relations now gives you a simple way to keep up with the information we need to share.

Did you know.....

...that there are descriptions explaining what each category it meant for? Thats true, it's in the submission process. Once you've selected a path a button appears that says "gallery info". You can use it to know if you are posting in the right category.

...search engines such as Google and Photobucket is not valid stock sources unless explicit permission is given by the owner of the material.

...Art Memes should ONLY BE SUBMITTED TO THE DEVIOUS FUN category!

...You can find a list of the correct Gallery Directors to suggest DD's, contests, and improvements to HERE?

Did you know...From the Film Gallery

... there are places online to download royalty free music for your films :B
FAQ #852: Where can I find music for my films?

...you cant use music without permission from the copyright holder in your film?
FAQ #844: Can I submit a film with copyrighted music?

Did you know...From the Digital Gallery

...If you used a tablet to create your work, it's digital? This is correct, if you use the computer, or equipment attached to the computer, it's digital. Traditional tool are pencils, paper, paints, pastels, charcoal and other tools you use with your hands.

...Scanning an drawing doesn't make it digital? Scanning and posting an image on a website does not change how the original image was made. You can still hold the original in your hand, scanning it hasn't dissolved the image magically. Scanning and posting your image online is just that, showing your image.

...Exact vector traces of existing drawings is not vector art and is in fact a policy violation? It is, because exact traces are copyright infringement. Vector art is much much more than tracing, amazing vector artists are able to create completely original images. Drawing in vectors is no different from drawing with a tablet, it's simply another type of digital art.

...The Digital Mixed Media category is supposed to be a place for deviations that have been created using at least two of the following methods: photomanipulation, vector/vexel, 3d renders, digital painting/drawing, fractals. (Brushes that look "vertorish" do not count as being the vector/vexel part in your work. Also, images of 3d renders that you did not render yourself do not count as the 3d part.)

...Photographs that have undergone digital post processing (for example colors, contrast, levels changed; subtle textures/brushes added; stitched panoramas) are not photomanipulations. They should be submitted to Photography > Darkroom > Digital instead.

...clay bowls, statues and other non computer sculpted art belong in the Artisan Crafts gallery, not the Digital> 3D gallery.

...

Did you know...From the Comics and Cartoons Gallery

...on DA Comics are sequential art and cartoons are not? That means that your drawings, even if in comic art style, that don't tell a story belong in cartoons not comics(with the exception of single panel comic pages and covers).

...A strip is a complete gag, where as a page is part of a greater whole and there are separate categories for each? There are! They are different types of comics all together and we must all learn not to miscat our comics so that they are easier for people to find.

...A strip can be part of a larger story, while still being a complete gag in itself? These still belong in the strips category and not pages.

...A comic page coloured in photoshop is digital regardless of how it is inked or drawn? It is the most prominent aspects of the art that define it's traditional/digitalness. It also does not make it mixed media, because mixed media does not cover digital/ traditional mix.

...Your fan characters go in fanart, not comics and cartoons? This is because comics and cartoons is for original characters only, and because fan characters are based on existing characters and places, they need to go in fanart. This means that your Invader Zim girlfriend characters should be in fanart.

...Photographs are not comics? Please stop posting your photos in comics and cartoons.

...That while Manga are indeed comics, they don't belong in comics and cartoons? They have their own category with their own directors who are experts on manga in particular. This division is not to invalidate manga as an artform, but rather to give two large communities room to breath and each get personalized special attention.

...Screencaps of cartoons and scan of comics are copyright violations and will be deleted when we find them. Do not post them on DA at ALL. Copyright violations are very serious infringements and can cause you a lot of trouble. Ignorance of the law or policies on DA is not an excuse.

...The gallery directors for comics and cartoons are here to do more for you than post news and move miscats? We are! Gallery directors for all galleries are here to help you communicate with Deviantart. If you have questions, issues or concerns about anything at all and you dont know where to go, contact your gallery director and if they don't know the answer or it's not our area to deal with, we can direct you where to go. We are here to serve and help you, we aren't meanies out to get you.

...The cartoons>Digtial> 3D and Comics>Digtial >3D galleries are not just misc galleries, they actually are made for a specific kind of art? That's right. Your MSpaint drawing and other art and photographs do not belong in there. The 3D galleries are made for art created in specific 3D programs such as Poser,3DS Max, Maya and others. It is a very difficult to do art form.

...That Fanart has it's own category now? It does! That means your drawings of Spiderman, Batman, Invader Zim, Sonic, Hello Kitty, and other copyrighted characters don't belong in comics and cartoons, they belong in the new Fanart category.

Did you know...from The Text Art Galleries

...Text art is nothing new! Calligraphy is a Greek word meaning, "beautiful writing". It is not specific and intensely beautiful. Keep your eyes pealed for examples of this wonderful art form in Asian, Indian, Tibetan, Persian, Islamic and English! For examples of the wonderful art work check out the Typography gallery!

... that when you type on your keyboard the resulting type that you see on your screen is called a type face? It's part of a font family! It takes days, if not weeks, for an artist to develop a new font for your viewing pleasure. Fonts are created to convey messages instantly. Consider that a smooth font may speak instantly of something contemporary while a highly decorative font can reinforce a message about occasions or events! For examples of art work made with text check out the Text Art galleries!

...The first instances of text art that were sent electronically were from telegraph operators! During long periods where they weren't in demand, such as holidays, telegraph operators would key strings of text that would line up with each other and seemingly look like pictures! This is quite arguably the first case of ASCII art! For examples of old school electronic text art check out the ASCII and ANSI galleries!

Did you know...from the Fetish Photography Gallery

... that fetish doesn't mean pornographic? Sexuality has a wide range continuum and fetish portraits are a niche of photography that expresses sexuality through the fetish object and its relation to the human. It doesn't actually have anything to do with penetration or other hardcore sexual imagery, and doesn't even need to require nudity!

...that while on deviantART, fetish photography is used to refer to photographs that depict sexual content, the word fetish itself is not restricted to sex? A quick trip to dictionary.com gets you a few other contexts for fetish that can help you understand even the non-sexual side of fetish and fetish-centered lifestyles.

fet·ish /ˈfɛt ɪʃ, ˈfitɪʃ/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[fet-ish, fee-tish ] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation –noun
1. an object regarded with awe as being the embodiment or habitation of a potent spirit or as having magical potency.
2. any object, idea, etc., eliciting unquestioning reverence, respect, or devotion: to make a fetish of high grades.
3. Psychology. any object or nongenital part of the body that causes a habitual erotic response or fixation.

Stay tuned every week for more DYK's from your Gallery Directors.

p.s. From the Digital Gallery: (about Mixed Media) You should say that these are works of the following DIGITAL art forms, because here "painting/drawing" can be mistaken with traditional art. :fear:
