Respecting Daily Deviations

~Pentacle5:iconPentacle5: reports, December 4
I've been noticing for a long time a serious lack of respect in the deviantART community towards those who have been awarded daily deviations. I'm not talking about constructive criticism; I'm talking about utter disrespect for the artist from saying that the piece featured did not deserve the daily deviation to declaring that the model depicted is too thin or too fat to claiming the content of the art is wrong based on someone's narrow opinion. Enough is enough.

*Lupus- Fighting the Wolf!

`Sophquest:iconSophquest: reports, October 23, 2007

:heart: For all who have LUPUS and to those who don't
know what it is, but care enough to learn! :blowkiss:

:pumpkin: OCTOBER is LUPUS AWARENESS MONTH! :pumpkin:

It is also the awareness month of other diseases and disorders.
Unfortunately, Lupus is usually one of the unknowns that people
are just too busy to learn about.
Can I be honest? It's taken me most of this month to sit and
actually write this article.
But, the disease has been a very difficult and very painful process for me,
and I refuse to be defined by it...so, I guess I just don't really
like to talk about it. I don't want to be pitied...but I know...
THIS IS IMPORTANT! There are so many people out there who have
multi-system symptoms and have yet to put the labyrinthine puzzle
together.
Even most doctors aren't that all-too-familiar with the disease.
It's in a specialized medicine category that most doctors don't spend
a lot of time on in Med school; RHEUMATOLOGY.

I've battled Lupus for more than 10 years now...
which means that I'm one of the lucky ones.
NO...actually...that isn't accurate. I'm one of the FIGHTERS! :strong:

I was told when first diagnosed that I would be lucky to stay
out of a wheelchair for another year.

BUT....I'M STILLING WALKING!

I was told that Systemic Lupus Erythematoses could kill me within
5 years.

BUT....I'M STILL HERE!

I was told that there is no cure and that I could only fight symptoms
with medication.

BUT....I FOUGHT WITH MEDS only at 1st, then when that wasn't enough;
VITAMINS, FOOD SUPPLEMENTS, MUSIC, LAUGHTER, PRAYER and most importantly
INFORMATION~ I just got educated on the subject! ~ I studied everything!..
Rheumatology, Allergy and Immunology, Natural Healing...you name it!

*HERE ARE THE FACTS:

(Please Watch this quick video if you don't have time to read everything!)

(Video found at X-Plain.com)

*Introduction to Lupus
(Information found at www.lupus.org)

Lupus is an autoimmune disease that can affect various parts of the body, including the skin, joints, heart, lungs, blood, kidneys and brain. Normally the body's immune system makes proteins called antibodies, to protect the body against viruses, bacteria, and other foreign materials. These foreign materials are called antigens.

In an autoimmune disorder like lupus, the immune system cannot tell the difference between foreign substances and its own cells and tissues. The immune system then makes antibodies directed against itself. These antibodies -- called "auto-antibodies" (auto means 'self' ) -- cause inflammation, pain and damage in various parts of the body.

Inflammation is considered the primary feature of lupus. Inflammation, which in Latin means "set on fire," is characterized by pain, heat, redness, swelling and loss of function, either on the inside or on the outside of the body (or both).

For most people, lupus is a mild disease affecting only a few organs. For others, it may cause serious and even life-threatening problems. Although epidemiological data on lupus is limited, studies suggest that more than 16,000 Americans develop lupus each year.

The Lupus Foundation of America (LFA) estimates between 1.5 - 2 million Americans have a form of lupus, but the actual number may be higher. More than 90 percent of people with lupus are women. Symptoms and diagnosis occur most often when women are in their child-bearing years, between the ages of 15 and 45.

In the United States, lupus is more common in African Americans, Latinos, Asians, and Native Americans than in Caucasians.

Symptoms

Although lupus can affect any part of the body, most people experience symptoms in only a few organs. The most common symptoms of people with lupus are listed below. Occurrences of particular symptoms happening are listed as percentages.

* Achy joints / arthralgia (95 percent)
* Fever of more than 100 degrees F / 38 degrees C (90 percent)
* Arthritis / swollen joints (90 percent)
* Prolonged or extreme fatigue (81 percent)
* Skin Rashes (74 percent)
* Anemia (71 percent)
* Kidney Involvement (50 percent)
* Pain in the chest on deep breathing / pleurisy (45 percent)
* Butterfly-shaped rash across the cheeks and nose (42 percent)
* Sun or light sensitivity / photosensitivity (30 percent)
* Hair loss (27 percent)
* Abnormal blood clotting problems (20 percent)
* Raynaud's phenomenon / fingers turning white and/or blue in the cold (17 percent)
* Seizures (15 percent)
* Mouth or nose ulcers (12 percent)

*If you have several of these symptoms, see your doctor right away.

HOW CAN I HELP?

*Donations can be made to 'The Lupus Foundation of America' here: [link]

*ALSO~ Please participate in the LUPUS AWARENESS CONTEST called:
'THE SEASON OF THE WOLF' (Deadline extended until NOV 15th!)
run by myself :iconsophstock: and :iconsolstock: (who also has the disease)~
You can read about the contest at either of our stock accounts!
$$ will be donated to the cause...for each and every ENTRY!!

:heart: In closing....

THANK YOU SO MUCH for taking the time to read this and to learn about
this debilitating and often devastating disease. ~ We LUPIES appreciate it!

:rose: Sincerely, Sophquest

:hug:sssss.. I understand what Lupis is.. More work and research needs to be done in the area of rheumatology.. My mother has Giant Cell Arteritis, or Temporal Arteritis.. In that same family of diseases.. We do everything in our power to keep her well and as healthy as possible.. Because these diseases are rare, little attention is paid to them.. There are no big profits for the drug companies.. I want to see the day when the words profit and industry are removed from medicine and medications.. Wishing you well.. Information and education are the key to staying as well as possible..
