CEA Update for October 31, 2007

$realitysquared:iconrealitysquared: reports, October 31, 2007
This week I’d like to take the time to mention a recurring issue; namely spamming by third party advertisers on site.

I’ve mentioned this issue previously during the CEA Update for September 5.

This issue is an ongoing problem and we are working to prevent new account creation by what appears to be the same spammer(s) who return repeatedly.

As I discussed in the previous update the content of the notes being spammed remains pretty much the same or similar enough to be immediately recognizable. And again I must warn everyone against clicking on the outside link which is provided in the spam.

I would also like to ask everyone to refrain from giving the spammer any attention. Attention is interpreted as a positive result by these particular internet trolls and encourages them to continue. So please do not respond to the note, do not comment on the user page or do anything else which can be interpreted as giving these people the results they seek.

Please report any spam notes to Help Desk. When you do so please use the Report Harassment category, mention the name of the spamming account and provide a paste of the contents which were in the note.

Please note that if the friendly exclamation point (!) has appeared by the name it is no longer necessary to report the spammer.

Due to the volume of the reports these spamming incidents trigger you will most likely not receive a personalized response; please do not let this discourage you from reporting additional spamming accounts as they appear. All reports are read.

Thank you for your continued patience while we continue to work on limiting access for these particular pests.

FAQ #687: What is news and what is not news?

If I fav and run, it's because I like it and don't have any constructive critique, get over it.
=rockfaerie666:iconrockfaerie666: Oct 31, 2007, 1:38:14 PM
I got one of those notes as well from !tonyharper about some strange baby photo contest and about winning 25K. And the only thing I'm happy about is that the link he provided didn't contain a virus (although I doubt it could affect my computer)... and no, I wasn't planning to apply to the contest, I just wanted to see wtf he's talking about :P.
Anyway, I'm glad he's banned now, and of course, thank you for the update, because this issue is definitely something more people should be concerned about.

Excellent article, with clear and precise instructions on how to help dA combat the spammers.
Thanks :)

Didn't know this was going on. Good to know what to do if it happens : 3.

Trouble with that is that people will then get spammed for invites. Plus it would make it very hard for complete newcomers to the online world to get into dA, even though they might be very talented in their field IRL. :hmm:

A couple of thoughts on this :

I know that MN@ are quick to lock down spam messages in the forums, but that still leaves the spam links out in the open. Would it not be an idea to also make such forum threads hidden as well? Or failing that, make just the spam message itself hidden, in the same way that comments elsewhere can be hidden?

Also, once a spam account has been identified, do you plan to then search dA for messages the spammer has posted containing the link to the external site, and hide them all from view?

I mention this because I think that removing the spammer's work from dA, or at least making it invisible, will be a much stronger deterrent to others tempted to follow suit. :hmm:

it was intended as a joke, though it'd really help with gallery management :eyes:

It seems that third-party spammers are out to ruin the fun out of the community for most people. I'm hoping that there will be a way to step up security for people who use scripts or bot accounts to spam people via notes or by messages.

The registration system is pretty vulnerable to spambots like this. :(

Good article though.
