As the comics scene continues to expand, we all look for a comic that might be fine-tuned to our personal interests. The webcomics genre has exploded in recent years with many fine entries that are examples of their creators' pasts and pleasures. All experiences can be accounted for in the huge pool of modern comics and webcomics.
My own personal experiences as a fanatic of psychology, neurology, and high-octane fight scenes now manifest in a comic called
Nature of Nature's Art. It might be compared to an attempt to recreate Aesop's Fables, with specific attention paid to the moral complexity of our modern society.
Q: What is it about?
A: Nature of Nature's Art is about how animals, who have developed complex intelligence, struggle to develop a modern society comparable to that of humans'. Just like real life, individuals may feel that one way is better than another. And when they debate over which way is best for everyone, fights may break out. Both literally and figuratively. It largely takes place in the future and distant future of an alternate Earth. The setting is a "what if" scenario, revolving around what would have happened if the Mars-sized planetesimal which grazed Earth billions of years ago (to later form our moon out of the debris) did not hit.
Q: Who are the characters?
A: The characters will change with each story. New stories are always being thought about. The current story is halfway done. It is drawn four days a week, so the story will usually advance pretty quickly, up until the fight scenes.
Q: There are a lot of fight scenes. Why so much fighting?
A: Highly technical fight choreography has been a hobby of mine for two decades. I like to take this chance to exercise some of my ideas. In terms of the story, animals may feel confused and angry. Their society may not offer such individuals enough support to think things through carefully. As a result, animals, suffused with fear, may lash out and take rash actions. And when they get started, it is hard to break away from these primitive selves. Are all our modern day stresses and struggles a manifestation of the desire to fight for our beliefs--physically?
Q: There are tons of webcomics; sometimes it seems like there is one for every person... Why should I bother to read this one?
A: Personally, I searched for a comic with this premise for many years. I was unable to find it, and in the end, I had to make it myself. A quadrupedal martial arts epic with moral, philosophical, psychological, and socilological undertones. If you have also been looking for something like this, like I was, then you might be entertained. While there are no instant laughs or rewards, I do think it becomes gratifying the more you stick with it.
Even though the setting is vast, Nature of Nature's Art is largely a character drama, dealing with unique, isolated instances throughout the world's timeline. As such, it becomes the most powerful when you start to make an effort to connect with the characters. Grant them acceptance and you can fight right alongside them for their beliefs. But exhibit "full denial" and you will discard all their passions as trivial or ineffective, rendering them useless--just like in the comic.
It is made using Oekaki PaintBBS in full color in order to keep production times down and keep the flow of strips consistent and quick. Each strip is about 2000 pixels long (about two-and-a-half screens vertically). Despite my usage of the word "quick", each one takes about eight hours to draw. I can personally guarantee that I put my all into making each strip, bound only by the limits of time, my own body, and the hardware of Oekaki.

This comic made its debut in May of this year. So there is about an hour and a half of reading material already waiting to be read!
I hope that you might enjoy it, as I hypothetically might have years ago.
