The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month marks the signing of the Armistice, on 11th November 1918, to signal the end of World War One.
At 11 am on 11 November 1918 the guns of the Western Front fell silent after more than four years continuous warfare.

What is Remembrance Day?
Remembrance Day is on 11 November. It is a special day set aside to remember all those men and women who were killed during the two World Wars and other conflicts. At one time the day was known as Armistice Day and was renamed Remembrance Day after the Second World War. Remembrance Sunday is held on the second Sunday in November, which is usually the Sunday nearest to 11 November. Special services are held at war memorials and churches all over Britain. A national ceremony takes place at the cenotaph in Whitehall, London.
Remembrance Day is also known as Poppy Day, because it is traditional to wear an artificial poppy. They are sold by the Royal British Legion, a charity dedicated to helping war veterans.

Anzac Day in Australia
Anzac Day is a public holiday in Australia. It is their day for remembering all those people who fought and died in many wars for freedom of all people and to stop injustice.

Veterans Day in The United States of America
Veterans Day is held in the USA, but the function of the observance is more closely matched by memorial day in May.
Pretty much every other country in the world honour their veterans at some time during each year. Many on the 11th of November.

Who Do You Remember And Why?
Every year there are huge services all around the world, to celebrate what our old folk did for us. They deserve more respect than we give them. If you have a think, you will realise that our children and the younger generations are no longer showing the respect, or giving the thanks that is due. This isnt true in all cases of course. However it is up to us to keep this message alive. How many of you still know a D-Day veteran? What about a WW1 veteran? Chances are your answer is no. Given the fact that the events we celebrate today are well in the past, Our veteran are dying out. When the time comes, in the not too distant future, that all our Veterans have passed away, This world will be poorer for their loss. So before this happens please do your bit to raise awareness in our younger folk. Could you imagine what it would be like without the sacrifice and bravery and loyalty given, so that we may live on?
You must also remember that we not only honour those from the Great Wars, but also those of more recent conflicts. Afghanistan and Iraq both claim hundreds of lives each year. We must now begin to show respect to those who fight on our behalf today. Weather you believe in the reasons for the conflicts or not, soldiers are fighting and dying because their country has asked them to.
I have personally lost friends to both Afghanistan and Iraq, and not once have I asked myself why are they fighting. I honour and respect them, which is what they deserve.

How Can You Do Your Bit?
Raising awareness is the key, but you can help in other ways. If you would like to donate to this charity please visit:
[link] . This is the UK Charity, I cannot list all the charities available but will do my best to help you find them if you wish to donate.
I could now go on to give you every detail possible of why and how we celebrate. But rather than me tell you everything, I would like each of you to leave a comment on this article, and tell me how you remember the sacrifices given.
Thankyou For Reading.
Alex

I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.
Great article Alex, sadly people seem to forget the reason they are free to walk around today, say what they want and do what they want. We owe our freedom to them, and freedom cannot be bought. If your intrested, and im sure you already know but I have a few related images in my gallery.
Personally I think everyone should visit normandy and the sights there. Just standing there you can feel the intensity of their massive sacrafice.

I was volunteering at the PLO -administrated Gaza Hospital, being freshly graduated Psychologist then, in 1982.
This year we commemorated the 25th year after the massacre in the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps, of which I am a survivor. Some 1800 to 3000 woman, children and young men were raped, tortured, mutilated and murdered.
All the while how do we treat our veterans? I am specialized in Combat - Conflict related Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.
UK veterans that served in Iraq or Afghanistan and are diagnosed with PTSD have to wait between 18 months and 4 years for adequate treatment.
many do not seek help at all, fearing that doing so has a negative impact on their carrier.
I wholeheartedly appreciate your initiative.

Welcome to my D.A. portfolio: [link]
It should be as much about remebering what those who came back went through as those who never returned too; though a lot of people forget that.
