Artisans and Functional Art - June 2009

^Kitten-of-Woe:iconKitten-of-Woe: reports, July 8
This is the fifth in this series that features art by members of the Artisan Crafts gallery that I feature daily in one of my journal modules. I add one each day and each is featured for 24-48 hours and then all are featured at the beginning of the next month as a group. These artisan works are found through my casual browsing and they could be very recently uploaded or they could be older works. They could have been made by very well-known artisans, by someone still unknown, or by someone very new to dA. They are random finds, so one gallery might be represented more than another and one artist might get featured more than once in the same month. My picks are totally random finds and that which struck me as something wonderful... I hope you think so, too, and that you enjoy this new series!

Polymer Clay plays Dress-Up

~deabusamor:icondeabusamor: reports, November 8, 2007
Do you remember being 5 years old and wanting more than anything to play with your older siblings? You wanted to stay up late, wear their grown up clothes and go to school dances just like them.

With only a few decades under its belt, Polymer clay is the younger sibling of most other art materials. Unlike ceramics, glassworking, knitting etc. polymer clay doesn't have an extensive history of established techniques. PC artists are constantly experimenting and learnign about their medium, testing the boundaries and limits of the clay, discovering new ways to implement textures into their designs.

Polymer clay's ready acceptance of paint, carving, inclusions and practically anything else you can think of make this medium incredibly useful in replicating the look of wood, gemstones, ivory etc.

So lets sit back a moment, remember those long lost childhood days when we played dress-up in our older siblings' clothes and see the various costumes of polymer clay.

Thank you for this wonderful article and a feature .
You picked out one of my favourite pieces for the feature :D.

I really do feel like a 5-year-old when I get my hands on polymer clay (FIMO in my case) and I love every minute of it-it's how I distance myself from everyday problems.

Thank you again.

Just to add:
eventhough one of the youngest materials, PC is one of the most versatile ones and I do hope that this article will encourage more people to start working with it.

One of the biggest challenges polymer clay artists face is being taken serious by non-p.c. artists. I remember talking with a potter once about p.c., and her responce was, "Oh, that's not REAL clay."
I said, "Well no, it's not EARTHERN clay, but it's another type of clay that has a lot of different uses."
She just looked at me like I was a little kid who didn't know what they were talking about.
I was a little offended, but not surprised.
I prefer it when artists support each other.
I'm happy to say I've introduced a few people to this medium, as well as come across a number of talented p.c. artists on DA.

Thank you for featuring on of my pieces.
