[link] What do we remember, and why? by
It is said that nothing good comes of war, and that the rich wage wars for profit, and the poor are told they are fighting them for Freedom. I joined the U.S Marine Corps late in 1967, trained for two years, and then went to Viet Nam in January of 1970. I was older than most, as the average age of the Viet Nam era combatant was 19.
My tour of duty can best be described as a comical mixture of the two movies "Apocolypse" and "Mash". I did all of the "required military" duties, but I used to surf on China Beach and Red Beach, but I ran with the Korea Marines and bought, sold, and traded stuff like Radar O'Reily. At night, I would go to sleep with the lull of the American cannons at Dahlia Pass, and be woken up to the sounds of the air raid sirens and incoming rockets and mortars from the Viet Cong.
I remember the irony of how we just became complacent to the violence around us, as if it were the everyday sounds that we grew up with. You would hear machine guns on Freedom Hill, and instead of running for cover you would sit, drinking with your buddies on your "hooch" step and discuss who was shooting at whom. (The Viet Cong had green tracer rounds, and we had red tracer rounds.) One hooch with 10 Marines living in it even went so far as to paint a 15 foot round target on their roof. A couple of days later a rocket hit the hooch dead center, and we all decided it was not a good idea to challenge the Viet Cong by putting targets on our roofs.
For some strange reason I felt as if I was in a motion picture, and although I was intended target on several occasions, I must have been imperious to death because although it was happening all around me, it could never happen to me. I was never scared, and I was never courageous, I was just at work, and I was just an observer.
Thank you

Counsulate-General's Personal Commentary:
MY WORD IS MY BOND
I know it is a lofty standard to hold one to in this day and age, but in my dealings with employers, business people, contractors, politicians, and many others, I find that people are making commitments that they either have no intentions of fulfilling, or find that they have overcommitted themselves.
I am bringing this to light because I have had to deal with four potential employers in a row who have made promises to me, then either couldn't fulfill their promises, or tried to renig on the spirit of what they had committed to.
One must conclude that, in this day and age, people are so detached from the consequences of their actions, that their word has become transparent.
[link] What Is Your Word Worth?
By Danick Buskermolen
In every industry I have ever worked in, and in my personal dealings with people,
I will not give my word, unless I can do what I say. If I am unsure, I will say so, or tell them Ill get back to them on that. I make it a policy to fulfil my word, as it is my bond. It is a reflection of who I am, and people come to trust that about you.
Have I ever made mistakes? Of course. But I will always try to correct them and clean up the situation. If I make an error after Ive given my word, its on my dime. Always under promise and over deliver.
[link] What is Your Word Worth Stories written by C. W. Naylor:
HASTY PROMISES
Many times promises are made hastily. The person does not stop to consider what she really is promising; she does not weigh its meaning. She says, "Yes, yes, I will"; but later when she thinks the matter over, it looks different to her. She is sorry that she made the promise, and begins to look for some way out so that she will not have to fulfill it.
FIDELITY TO PROMISES
Do not make too many promises. She who is too free to promise, places little value upon her promises. She forgets them readily or lets some trifle hinder her performance of them. She always has a ready excuse to ease her conscience and to release herself from the obligation. This indicates a want of character, a lack of real sincerity.

Energy Crisis
DA Political Forum Deviants discuss the main problems on energy crisis, as a world wide issue, while we Argentineans are having problems with gas energy, and infrastructure. We must learn from world knowledge how we can face these problems, since there are more advanced countries that can teach us a bit. In this thread most important subjects are discussed, such as nuclear energy, fossil based fuels, and many other. Give your thoughts on this !

Personal National/Local Commentary
Since the elections (October) there has been a calmed vibration on everything. But, we must not forget this election meant not only that Kirshner can run again, and this might be a perpetuation of power, but that the analysis on marriage elections must be taken seriously. There are laws, in Argentine, that prevent someone from staying in power using your wife to perpetuate yourself. This might very well be a reason to review this laws.
Yours truly,
Sebastian Cardenas

National/Local Commentary
Remembrance Day's solemnities seem overshadowed by the announcement of an investigation into the financial dealings between German-Canadian citizen Karlheinz Schreiber and former PM Brian Mulroney. This seems to spell trouble for not only Mulroney, but the rest of Conservative Party who is connected to him, including Peter MacKay and current PM Stephen Harper. Harper was elected due to the sponsorship scandal that rocked the Liberal Party, but with this investigation, it seems the Conservatives have a scandal of their own to deal with. One wonders how Dion's Liberals will deal with this.

This is Coatlicue, the goddess of death in the aztec culture. Coatlicue is Nahuatl for "the one with the skirt of serpents". She was also known by the epithets "Mother Goddess of the Earth who gives birth to all celestial things", "Goddess of Fire and Fertility", "Goddess of Life, Death and Rebirth", and "Mother of the Southern Stars".

Here in Mexico our tradition is not Halloween, but the "Day of the Dead", an ancient tradition wich combines indigenous and religious elements. On November 1 and 2 it's believed that our beloved deads visit us so we prepare them all the food they used to like.

Personal Commentary
The floods in Tabasco and Chiapas have unveiled three realities:
1-The mexican mass media (most of all the T.V.) is trying to ignore the human responsabilites behind the tragedy, saying that the global warming is the cause of all... this is just the same argument that Felipe Calderon keeps saying.
2-The state of neglect of necessary hydraulic programs over the past 25 years and the lack of prevention and evacuation programs.
3-The same day that Calderon anounced the sending of 200 millions of pesos to help Tabasco, it was revealed that just in this year, He has spent ten times that on TV and other media advertisements.

Parliament Elections.
On the 21 of October elections to the lower and upper house of parliament took place in Poland. The overall voter turnout reached a high(comparing to the previous years), but disappointing level of 53.88%.
The results(of the elections to the lower house of parliament) are displayed in the table below:
Platforma Obywatelska, PO(Civic Platform): 41.51%
Prawo i Sprawiedliwość, PiS(Law and Justice): 32.11%
Lewica i Demokraci, LiD(The Left and Democrats): 13.15%
Polskie Stronnictwo Ludowe, PSL(Polish People's Party): 8.51%
The results shown above include only the parties that had enough votes(at least 5%) to have their representatives in the parliament.
Independence day

by

by
On 11 November 1918 Poland regained its Independence after 123 years of political nonexistence. To honor this event 11 November is celebrated in Poland as the Independence Day and a national holiday. The featured deviations are photos which were taken during the parade which was a part of the celebrations.
National/Local Commentary
The results of the elections introduce some significant changes in the politics in Poland. The former Prime Minister(Jarosław Kaczyński) and the President(Lech Kaczyński) not only belong to(or originate form) the same party(PiS), but are also brothers. Many people have seen this as a threat to democracy. The current Prime Minister(Donald Tusk, PO) makes a big change.
The Independence day wasn't always oficially celebrated. The communist authorities found it "politically incorrect" and established a substitute holiday: the 22 of July, day of the PKWN Manifesto. When Poland became a democratic state, the rightful holiday was restored.
