royal welsh motorcycle show cancled

Legal threat as bike show dropped

The organiser of Wales' biggest motorbike show could take legal action after it was cancelled amid fears of violence between rival biker gangs.

The annual Welsh National Motorcycle Show was to have taken place at the Royal Welsh showground in Powys.

But Dyfed-Powys Police said there would be a "significant risk of violence" if it went ahead as planned next week.

Motorcyclists planning to attend the event near Builth Wells between 23 - 26 May have also criticised the decision.

Organiser Steve Bennett said the cancellation would cause "financial suffering".

He said he is considering taking legal action against the Royal Welsh Showground Committee after they called off the event following meetings with police.

There's more violence in any major city on any weekend than you get at any of the bike shows
Steve Bennett, organiser
Mr Bennett said his company Welsh Motorcycle Shows Ltd, which organises the event, had not been part of the discussions and only found out about the cancellation on Tuesday.

But he understood there were fears of clashes between the Hells Angels and the Outlaws.

He said violence between the gangs was "very rare and very sporadic", adding: "To be honest there's more violence in any major city on any weekend than you get at any of the bike shows."

But in a statement, police said: "Dyfed-Powys Police has serious reservations about the potential security implications of holding the Welsh motorcycle show at Builth Wells this year.

"The reservations are based on a significant increase in violence between rival motorcycle gangs across the UK as a whole.

"Nationally a number of motorcycle shows linked to the rival factions are facing challenge under the Licensing Act 2003, as the police believe the shows will be targeted for disturbance and there remains a real risk of serious violence.

Dyfed-Powys Police are of the view that there is a significant risk of violence at this year's Welsh motorcycle show
Dyfed-Powys Police

"Recently the NEC Birmingham cancelled a motorcycle show to protect the safety of everyone involved.

"The organisers of a similar show in Derbyshire have also cancelled that event. Additionally Warwickshire Constabulary is in the process of mounting a legal challenge against a show to be held in their area."

The force added the police believed there was a "significant risk of violence at this year's Welsh motorcycle show."

Mr Bennett said he was considering legal action for traders and entertainers who had been at the event, along with ticket holders.

"We're talking about a significant amount of financial suffering here and an awful lot of money is involved in these events," he added.

Welsh Motorcycle Shows Ltd also organises the Isle of Anglesey Motorcycle Show, which is planned to take place between 22 - 25 August.

Last week, organisers of a rock music festival at Catton Hall in south Derbyshire withdrew their application for a licence amid fears of violence.

APPLY for a DeviantART Exhibition ***UPDATE***

`alchemism:iconalchemism: reports, November 15, 2007
:bulletred::bulletred::bulletred: UPDATE :bulletred::bulletred::bulletred:

I have received DOZENS of notes from artists wanting to exhibit in DeviantART's first online EXHIBITION. Each is including a handful of images from their gallery, an ART RESUME and a STATEMENT about their work! This should prove to be an awesome show with many already quite established artists taking part from all over the globe.

:bulletred::bulletred::bulletred: ** Applications are accepted only until next Friday - NOVEMBER 23rd, 2007 - so make sure you have your materials to me before then! Please note me, `alchemism with the details listed below. :bulletred::bulletred::bulletred:

READ BELOW!

Have you ever wanted to be featured in the NEWS on DeviantART? Have you ever wanted to excercise your skills as not only an artist, but as a professional?

Here's the scoop:

APPLICATION PROCESS:

:bulletred: Submit 4-6 thumbs in a note to `alchemism (previously assistant to the Director and Curator of Edward Day Gallery, Toronto; currently a Master of Fine Arts student at the University of Waterloo; Assistant Professor of 2nd year oil painting - intended to inform as credential only!)

:bulletred: Include a professional ART RESUME - something that lists your accomplishments, your exhibitions in galleries or cafes, awards, collections, etc. Include as text within the note, or through a link to a website or PDF.

:bulletred: Include a statement of your intent about your work - what does your work mean, what are your directions, what are your processes? (100 - 150 words is acceptable)

A selection of artists with the appropriate credentials will be included in a DeviantART NEWS article.

If you are interested in submitting an application but don't know where to begin, please read above, or do a bit of research on Google to find out the best ways to present your work and your ideas. Find layouts for good art resumes (not unlike a regular employment resume, just filled with art merits!), find examples of artist statements that might help you write something solid about your own work. This is a common step in anyone's professional artistic career, and more often than not, it is just as important as the work itself.

GOOD LUCK!!!

The first exhibition will be posted on Saturday, December 1st, 2007 on the FRONT PAGE of DeviantART NEWS.

It will be enlightening to see the perspectives serious artists come up with. This is a great opportunity for deviants to step up and improve themselves professionally.

I don't get it.....why do already established artists with a resume need to exhibit work here?
what if someone is a great artist, but has not shown anywhere yet?
I doubt they would have a chance to be picked....

the show here will be fantastic nonetheless and I'm looking forward to seeing it because I like to look at good art
but to a large extent I agree with padlamoij's view below

"appropriate credentials"

do you HEAR how elitist that sounds

not a darn word about quality of the work

just "APROPRIATE CREDENTIALS"

snobbish krappy elitism has no place on DA
`alchemism:iconalchemism: Nov 16, 2007, 6:31:20 AM
I've been given some great work, most with very little experience. The point is to get those people with little experience to try their hand with their own resume, statement. If the work is good, certainly it will be exhibited.

It's something different.

I agree with the socialist aspect of DA - to help all in any form possible; where even the newest of artists can get their name out there. Each day there is a news article featuring hundreds of unknown artists works.

What I am doing is to have an artist actually work for the space within the news article - to allow anyone interested a chance to present themselves as a professional artist.

It's always about quality - you've misread.
But it's also about those artists who are interested in stepping up their game a little bit.

Dude, what's the use for anything on a website? Generally nothing. You've always had a bleak look on the art world - and although I agree to some extent - there's a lot of fun going on too. You just have to find the right galleries, the right directors, the right places to, if it's your thing, sell a bit of work to make a bit of a living.

This gives artists with really good work to actually step it up - rather than tossing a wrinkled lined paper in my face with where they've shown, they're actually printing on clean white paper with a staple. Know what I mean?

It's actually going to be decent - I'll write up a press release and exhibit approx. 20 paintings/drawings/digital work that are coherent as a show.
