Is tradional art a thing of the past?

=samurai30:iconsamurai30: reports, Nov 16, 2007
I Have always drawn with tradional means since I was very young and now I'm 30. I see all the fancy digital mediums and I'm impressed at how vibriant and realistic somethings can look. I'm torn between choices as to go the photoshop route and tablet or keep the old pencil and ink going. I want to know what opinions you out there think about what makes tradional art thrive or fizzle...

pencil and ink is still amazing. I'd say stick with it...but maybe try out Photoshop and whatnot? Just to widen your horizons.

Traditional art will never die. The directness of working traditionally cannot be replicated by digital media.

DUDE keep to the pencil and paper, everything that has any skill involved is dyin out. Well maybe thats not entirely true, but i have a thing bout things like this, I hate to see things like this dyin out. I don't think traditional art ever will, but lets not help it along eh?

I personally prefer both methods. It all depends on what I'm in the mood for or if there is a mistake somewhere in the process that the digital medium can correct. I even like to mix the two together sometimes. The pencil and paper should never go away, though!

Like painting, sculpting,or any other mediums considered Traditional or Old School, pencil and ink will never die out.Digital are is amazing and versatile but it's not for everyone.I tried drawing with a tablet a few years back and could not feel a connection, could not get the subtleties, details,or feel the same amount of control using that method.Maybe having drawn in pencil and ink for over 35yrs had a lot to do with it,but to me,it was just not the same. Most people start off drawing with pencil and ink and through their lives go on to try different things till they find the medium or mediums that's right for them. It's a personal thing, like what people consider is art,it's all up to the individual.Digital art is another choice and is rightfully popular, but it will never replace the pencil or ink.If you enjoy pencil and paper stay with it,if you wish to learn about digital art do so and learn how you can use it in concert with pencil and ink, don't change your style just because another medium is more used.People appreciate Traditional Art just as much as Digital Art,just like they still enjoy books and comic books just as much as TV/Movies/Video Games/Internet.Everything has their own validity, strengths and charms..something to offer that the other doesn't..old inspires new and new inspires old..that's why their are so many mediums and genres in art.

Besides all that just rember one thing..a pencil or ink won't die on you because a battery or power has gone out.

Boy do I know how you feel! Imagine how it is for someone like me who does sculpting!!! There is something that newer mediums won't be able to replace in the immediacy of what is now called "traditional" art. Keep alive brother and keep doing what you do! I always think that without technology, where would these completely digital pieces be? When the lights go out, physical art will still be there.

It's not as thing of tha pasts ince Uni's ask for it in porfoltio's and what not but since it's easier to do work digitally and produce the same results generally and it has obvious advantages i tend to stick with that method. Well for cleanin' up my drawings anyways.

Nothing beats pencil and paper, those are like the very foundations of any artist's arsenal of art. we all start from carbon wood, and its been around since like forever lol. PS and tabs are just a hi-tech tool to help us digitally, but it always boils down to what we can do on paper. I don't think theres anything wrong going digital, only that its better to start from traditional and go on from there ^^ it never hurts to broaden our perspective.

Its an added bonus if you learn PS or the likes of it, besides personally i think traditional artist are waaay better whenever they jump to digital, cause they'll always have that solid traditional background to back em up, so to them, digital is just another toy to play with ;)
think about it, one day we might paint with Hologram, but they still need pencil and paper to sketch out that damn machine :lmao:
