Photojournalism: An Ethical Approach

^Helewidis:iconHelewidis: reports, January 10
If you click the link (title) you'll be directed to an online edition of a book originally published by Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Publishers, Hillsdale, New Jersey, 1991: Photojournalism An Ethical Approach by Paul Martin Lester.

I consider it food for thought and reflection about photojournalism and ethics and thus would like to share it with you.

Now follows an excerpt to lure you into reading the full version:

A photojournalist is a mixture of a cool, detached professional and a sensitive, involved citizen. The taking of pictures is much more than F-stops and shutter speeds. The printing of pictures is much more than chemical temperatures and contrast grades. The publishing of pictures is much more than cropping and size decisions. A photojournalist must always be aware that the technical aspects of the photographic process are not the primary concerns.

A mother crying over the death of her daughter is not simply an image to be focused, a print to be made, and a picture to be published. The mother's grief is a lesson in humanity.

If the photojournalist produces a picture without a thought for her tragedy, the lesson is lost. But if the photographer cares for her loss, is made more humane, and causes the readers to share in her grief, photojournalism has reached its highest potential.

Despite its frustrations and low moments, the lesson of humanity is why photojournalism is an extremely rewarding profession. For that reason, photojournalism is worthy of the best thought and actions possible by its participants.

Actress to play Bella Swan in "Twilight"

~Asilwen:iconAsilwen: reports, November 18, 2007
One of my favorite books, Twilight by Stephenie Meyer is being made into a movie. They just released who is to play the main character, Bella Swan.

From stepheniemeyer.com:

***November 16, 2007 Update*** (Official Press Release)

Kristen Stewart to star in Twilight

Los Angeles, CA November 16, 2007 – Summit Entertainment announced today that Kristen Stewart will star as “Bella Swan” in the production of the feature film TWILIGHT, the thriller-romance based on Stephenie Meyer’s publishing phenomenon. The film, which begins production February 2008, will be directed by Catherine Hardwicke, with Melissa Rosenberg (STEP UP) having adapted the script. Karen Rosenfelt (DEVIL WEARS PRADA) and Greg Mooradian will produce along with Mark Morgan via his Maverick Films banner.

TWILIGHT tells the story of 17-year-old Bella Swan who moves to the small town of Forks, Washington to live with her father, and becomes drawn to Edward, a pale, mysterious classmate who seems determined to push her away. But neither can deny the attraction that pulls them together…even when Edward confides that he and his family are vampires. Their unorthodox romance puts her in physical danger when Edward’s nemesis comes to town and sets his sights on Bella.

Erik Feig, Summit Entertainment’s President of Production stated, “We at Summit are truly excited about the franchise potential of this remarkable Romeo and Juliet story. Of course, you are only as good as your Juliet and Kristen Stewart has that magical combination of being a great actress, deeply appealing, and perfect for the part.”

Meyer’s Twilight is a cultural phenomenon, hitting legions of readers of all ages, that has spawned two sequels including New Moon and Eclipse. Twilight is a #1 New York Times Best Seller and has been lauded by critics. Twilight’s recent sequel Eclipse most recently debuted at #1 on the USA Today bestseller list unseating the newest Harry Potter.

Erik Feig along with Summit Entertainment’s Senior Vice President of Production, Geoff Shaevitz, and Creative Executive Gillian Bohrer will oversee the project for the studio.

Kristen Stewart was introduced to worldwide audiences with her outstanding performance alongside Jodie Foster in PANIC ROOM. Stewart can now be seen in INTO THE WILD for director Sean Penn. She is currently shooting the female lead role in ADVENTURELAND opposite Ryan Reynolds and Jesse Eisenberg for director Greg Mottola. She will soon be seen in a starring role in the independent film THE CAKE EATERS for director Mary Stuart Masterson, the independent film YELLOW HANDKERCHIEF alongside William Hurt and Maria Bello and a supporting role in WHAT JUST HAPPENED alongside Robert De Niro and Sean Penn for director Barry Levinson.

Stewart’s additional film credits include IN THE LAND OF WOMEN, THE MESSENGERS, ZATHURA, SPEAK, FIERCE PEOPLE, CATCH THAT KID, UNDERTOW, COLD CREEK MANOR and THE SAFETY OF OBJECTS.

Stewart is represented by The Gersh Agency and lawyer Joel McKuin at Colden McKuin & Frankel.

Karen Barna, Summit’s Director of Business Affairs, negotiated the deal on behalf of the studio.

***A note from Stephenie about the casting of Kristen Stewart:

I'm very excited to have Kristen Stewart play Bella in the upcoming Twilight movie. She's an amazing actress with experience all across the board—action, horror, comedy, romance, and more. Since Twilight has moments that fit into every one of these genres, I'm thrilled to have a Bella who has practice with them all.

Summit's vision of the Twilight movie continues to dovetail very closely with mine, and I'm comforted to know that my "baby" is in the right hands.

For every actress that has been suggested as Bella in the past few years, there are always a slew of critics that cry, "But she doesn't look like Bella!" (Which can often be translated thusly: "She doesn't look like ME!") To this I would like to say: "Of course she doesn't!" Bella is a fictional character, and she looks different to everyone. As is the same with every actor who will be cast in the next few months, no one is going to match up with your mental picture exactly—or mine. The thing to hope for is a really great actor who can make us believe she is Bella (or Alice or so forth) for roughly two hours. I think we've got that with Kristen Stewart, and I can't wait to see her step into the role!

Aw, I really don't want Twilight to become a movie. The story should be able to stay in the reader's head (so every girl can picture herself as Bella, haha). Besides, no actor could ever be as perfect as Edward. :] And the movie could still end up being crappy and leave out important things from the book... ugh.
But whatever, if Stephenie's happy with the way that it's going then maybe it won't be as terrible as I feel it could be.

Dammit! I hate it when they turn my favorite books into movies. They always butcher it, and then it just becomes a trend. I agree with :iconinvisiblefangs:, that it should be up to the reader's imagination. I'm probably not going to see it.

Ah well. :/ Stephanie seems alright with how it's going, so I'll try to keep an open mind.

I almost died when I found out they weren't having auditions, and I was pretty dissapointed that they picked her at first.. but I do admit she is WAY better than some little teeny bopper coming in and playing Bella. I really just want to see who's going to play Edward!

(and I'm sooo jealous of her.. I would kill for the role!)

Yeahh.. I'm not sure what I think about her, but maybe she'll prove me wrong in the movie. I thought someone like Danielle Panabaker or Emily Browning would have been way better.. The one they chose didn't really suit Bella's description that well. Oh well!

They'd better pick a good Edward.. Although I doubt everyone will be happy, because most people have way different ideas of what he looks like.

I would kill for her role too! haha. Last year at lunch time, my friends were talking about Twilight, and they told me out of everyone there I looked the most like Bella.. I wish!

My friend Sara would be the perfect Bella in my eyes, and she's obsessed with the book too (she's in my gallery). If I had contacts & dyed hair, I'd LOVE to play her! But anyways, I hope the movie won't be too dissapointing...

To be honest, I don't think she'll be able to pull of Bella well. She looks to tough, kind of. And I imagined Bella very soft looking, and shy. Kristen Stewart looks too...I don't know, hard, I guess? She can act, just the way she looks doesn't do it for me. I have a feeling the movie isn't going to be that good. I'm just waiting to see who is cast as Edward. Haha.

I cant see her playing Bella at all. She might prove me wrong but I agree with some of the others, she's not as soft and shy looking as I'd hoped. I hope it all works out. I'm looking forward to see who will play Edward...thats more important than who plays Bella right now to me lol.

i think she's SO much better than who most people wanted. I was disgusted by those "who should play bella" boards. awful choices. I love this actress, she's great. I don't really see her as Bella.. but it's kind of an interesting twist on her character, should be good.
