AR Newsletter PixelArt & Dolls (November)

^ShoneGold:iconShoneGold: reports, November 18, 2007
:bulletred:File Restrictions for PixelArt Gallery & Doll Gallery

This has been wanted for ages and now finally there are new file restrictions which have been brought into the PixelArt and Doll Galleries. Either GIF format or PNG format are the only files which may be used to upload work into the PixelArt and Doll Galleries.

Many Galleries are restricting GIF images so it is possible we may see more animations being miscatted in PixelArt and Dolls. I am finding a huge reduction in miscats and hope this will help to keep things a bit tidier from now on.

:bulletred:Christmas Competition for Dolls and PixelArt

For those who may have missed the news, there are two Christmas Competitions I am running for both PixelArt and Dolls. They have commenced and will run until midnight 25th December. There are prizes of subscriptions and devWEAR. Here are links to the information… [link] and [link]

:bulletred:Taking up the Challenge

It is always very heartening when people strive for greater achievement in their art and and take on a challenge to extend their abilities. Recently it was decided that the use of transparencies/reduced opacity was not appropriate for PixelArt and its use should be discouraged both here and elsewhere.
~StylePixelStudios was one who took up the challenge and has decided to push his boundaries even further and give himself greater artistic challenges in his work with PixelArt. Recently he has created a fine piece of PixelArt without the use of transparencies/reduced opacity and is focusing more on his dithering and color choices with this piece. Efforts such as this should be applauded for the dedication shown to growing his abilities and the innovative creation of PixelArt. [link]

:bulletred:Familiar Faces Returning, New Faces Appearing

Since the Galleries have been a bit tidier and the Dolls have finally been given their own Gallery, people are noticing that deviantART are really serious about creating a thriving PixelArt community here. It is very heartening to see some of the greats returning to dA as well as new people arriving, to show us their fine examples of PixelArt.
One of the truly great PixelArtists to return to dA is ~zoggles. He has a wealth of experience creating some amazing and innovative works. A trip to his Gallery will be sure to delight. Here are a few pieces from his Gallery…

:bulletred:Creating Shadows in PixelArt Using a Limited Main Colour Palette
~zoggles has generously shared with us one of PixelArt’s secrets as to how to create a wonderful shadow effect using only the main colours from a limited palette, free of transparency/reduced opacity. Our thanks and gratitude to him for this information.

:hmm:
Does that mean .bmp and .jpg aren't acceptable anymore?

There is more to being a decent critic than saying you like or hate something. Challenge yourself to say which things you like about something you are judging/doing a critique on, or what about it you don't.

Yep, but why you would use those files I do not know :D

How do you mean? When you save something in MSPaint (or I'm assuming any other program), just change the file extension under the file name when you are saving it. Very very simple :)

Ahh...
It had .gif but no .png, then another program had .png but no .gif.
 Sometimes when I submit .bmp the site used to automatically convert it to .jpg for me. Oh well.
You're right though; an extension's an extension.

I don't do pixel art that much anyway but there's one piece I have in my gallery I'm most proud of that I did pixel by pixel; might have to change the filetype on that one.

Yay! no more horrid jpgs! :boogie:
`BoffinbraiN:iconBoffinbraiN: Nov 22, 2007, 7:07:41 PM
I can imagine that would reduce the miscats by even more than 75%, since the majority of artwork is submitted as JPEGs.
