DENYING THE POVERTY DRAFT-THE SOLDIER AS A SYMBOL

=whitetrashpalace:iconwhitetrashpalace: reports, 1d 1h ago
The Poverty Draft, Politics, Symbols, and the inconvenience of being human.

Even in times of war, the Soldier as an individual is of no consequence. The Soldier is a symbol, a simple pawn in a culture war. The Soldier is either a villain, or a Hero. The Soldier always serves for the honor of his country, not his paycheck. The Soldier is faithful, as there are 'no atheists in the trenches'. The Soldier is Combat Arms. The Soldier is male, he married a young white girl, and he has a baby on the way, whom he has never met.

The Soldier is a romantic ideal.

A Feminist Perspective on Questionable Images

~sick-snowangel:iconsick-snowangel: reports, July 1
Sex and sexuality in art are some of my favorite things, and certainly sometimes arousal is part of this, but more importantly, it is FAR MORE than about simple arousal, as porn is. One of my deviantart friends, :iconcypherthepanicartist: , said that art of a sexual nature can “ provoke thoughts about our dreams, fears, desires, and place in the world"...yes! Well done art that deals with sex exposes the soul of the subject or act in question, not just the naughty bits. I feel that any kind of work on this site that looks at sexuality in a thoughtful or artistic or critical or celebratory, etc. way is certainly appropriate content for an art site, because, of course, this work is actually ART.

Graffiti: Art or Vandalism?

~jjankk:iconjjankk: reports, July 7
This is an extremely old article from 2005 but I found it interesting.
It explains how some graffiti artists began to sell their art for money. There are people in the world who think that graffiti is art and not vandalism and other who feel the opposite way. I feel like graffiti is a work of art and should not be banned or should not be against the law. Even though I consider graffiti art I don't think it should be sold to galleries and to people. I think graffiti was meant for the streets and that's where it should stay. What's your opinion on this topic?

DeviantArt: It's not all fanart and porn.

=HinoNeko:iconHinoNeko: reports, November 20, 2007
Upon logging onto DA, one is bound to be confronted with fanart. Fanart, fanart, fanart, FANART. (This is assuming that your front page settings include the Popular section and/or, of course, the Fan Art section.)

Digging further into said Popular section, one can find countless photos and drawing of girls wearing the most fashionable varieties of nothing. It's enough to make one think that DA is overrun by fanart, girls in skimpy outfits, and fanart of girls in skimpy outfits - and many, apparently, do.

But is that assumption accurate?

I decided to test it out with one of DA's most overlooked tools: The Random Deviation button. (If you don't know what that is, scroll to the bottom of any DA page and click it. You'll get the idea pretty fast.)

But I didn't just click it once, oh no. Neko clicked it many, many times. The results, including some categories I tacked on, are as follows:

1. [link] - original drawing
2 . [link] - fanart (fan character)
3. [link] - photograph (object)

97. [link] - literature (poem)
98. [link] - DA ID
99. [link] - photograph (room)
100. [link] - photograph (clothing/girl)

Photographs - 40
Original drawings - 19
Fanart - 14
Literature - 4
Other - 23

Let's take a look at that second list. Let it sink in. Photographs outnumber every other category, not just slightly, but overwhelmingly. Fanart, meanwhile, sits in at a cozy little 14/100 - not even a fifth of the entire list.

Another interesting note is that most of the fanart isn't Naruto/Bleach/Kingdom Hearts, the examples that most point to when complaining about the "flood" of fanart on DA. (In fact, Naruto is the only such fandom represented.) Anime-related fanart only counts for 5 of the 14 fanarts, and two of those are arguable - one is of a fan-character, and another is of Pokemon, a franchise that could count as either anime or game.

One other striking result is that of literature. For one, it makes up a very small percent of the total results - not itself surprising, as DA does in general lean towards visual arts such as paintings and photography. Also, all the literature results here are poetry, and relatively short. Whether that's pure coincidence or a measure of DA as a whole is up to interpretation. ;]

I will admit, there were a few results that did pop up that I did not include in the final toll. However, these results were not excluded due to their content, but rather due to factors such as category confusion, (Where I was unable to think of one or even a combo of categories that applied.) failure to load properly, or due to a lack of "artsiness", as in one case where a "literature" Deviation was little more than one line of gobbledygook. You'll have to do better than that, dude.

One thing I did not leave out was art hidden behind a Mature Content filter, or artwork that was clearly erotic/fetishistic. Yet said images do not appear in the results. That's right: out of 100+ random Deviations, not-a-one was raunchy enough to find itself banned from, say, network television. (There are a handful of results that I myself believe are meant to look "sexy", though that could always just be a disagreement between artist intent and my own sensibilities.)

So, there you go. The moral/point of this article? Essentially, that things one finds in the Popular section are not necessarily a reflection on DA as a whole, and that fanart and porny pictures aren't as big of a "problem" as some think they are. :]

NOTE: This is my very first news submission, so if I've grossly miscategorized this, let me know. Editorials seems like a fitting place for this, but the articles currently in the section are pretty varied, making it hard to tell what the standard is.

You rock! Searching through all of DA and actually finding true art. Kinda reminds me of those strange treasure hunts. People worship fan art too much. We really need to branch out more often and thank all those people who DO REAL ART!

=HinoNeko:iconHinoNeko: Nov 20, 2007, 8:25:22 PM
Hee! Well, the point of this wasn't really to make a call for not-fanart as much as to show that while fanart may rule the popular page, it doesn't take up nearly as much total DA-space. :]

Though yes, I do agree, it's good to spread one's artistic wings! Cross genres, mediums, styles, everything! x3

But then it would have been HUUUUUUGE! And I was already a little worried it was getting too lengthy. D:

That's one of the reasons I included the categories next to the links, so people wouldn't have to plow through everything to get my point. :]
=mollygrue:iconmollygrue: Nov 20, 2007, 9:32:20 PM
I agree with `mirrorkills. While 100 thumbs is a large number, it's not nearly as off-putting as being told to click on 100, or even 10 different links. I think that most people look through visual art based on composition and color anyway. So yes, thumbs please.

Anywho, this isn't meant to discourage you. It's just something to keep in mind for next time.

wow i bow down to you for doing this! :worship: i also think the assumption of how dA is infested with too much fanart is way over-rated. i mean im a 16-year old fangirl myself, xD what you did should really make people think before they make any assumptions. D<

wow clicking through 100 deviations must have taken a while..O_o good on ya for doing it!!

Hey, I've got a bundle of free time. :B

This reminds me of the Unknown Artists thing DevaintART does. Man how I long for the new section to return to the homepage.

I enjoy fanart as the next person but to much of it is just.... to much. This is a great editorial article & I agree. Truthfully, I've kept my eyes on the DD's lately. :ninja:

Mm. DDs have actually managed to be really good lately, I usually end up finding one or two things I like enough to fave. (Or at least dig through the artist's gallery and find something ELSE I like.) ;]
