It's all about Mimes!!!

^Helewidis:iconHelewidis: reports, October 9
According to wikipedia, a mime artist is someone who uses mime as a theatrical medium or as a performance art, involving the acting out a story through body motions, without use of speech.

This is somewhat of a tribute and a gossip article. Read more for further understanding of why I'm saying this! :)

Some of my favorite deviation.

Some are very inspirational,
some are just silly and make you laugh,
some are just fun to look at,
some you hate 'cause you think it's ugly,
some you love 'cause you just do,
and some you'll enjoy.

Net Authority: Troll site or Just Badly Managed?

~Seanyx-Chris:iconSeanyx-Chris: reports, November 21, 2007
Before flagging this for not being news and/or not being related to deviant art policy, read first.

I have come to the attention of a site known as Net Authority (website is here [link] ). Net Authority is a website that is "...dedicated to the removal of offensive material from the Internet.". Using the "Internet Acceptable Use Policy" as a common ground to determine what is acceptable and what is not, they add websites that are deemed unappropriate for the internet. As I browed the site I believe to myself "This website is doing a good thing for us." until I look onto the page that explains this policy. The makers of these site might be believers of God, as their rules are supportive of him and their model for their rules are explained here...:

-----Beginning Quotation------
"As a result of this, we decided that the best way to write this document would be to model it after something that everyone knows and follows (or at least should!) in their daily lives already. We chose God's own law—The Ten Commandments. To help keep things simple though, we have narrowed it down to five simple rules."
-----End Quotation-----

And here. Those simple rules you ask?:

-----Beginning Quotation------
"Thou shalt not post pornographic material.

There is a common misconception that pornography is limited purely to images or textual descriptions of an explicit sexual nature. This is not the case. Anything that can evoke impure thoughts in the mind of the beholder is pornographic.

Thou shalt not post hateful material.

Any material that promotes or inspires hatred or violence towards any other person or group of people is strictly forbidden.

Thou shalt not post blasphemous material.

Any material that would lead one astray from the righteous path of the one true God must not be permitted on the Internet. These days children are gaining access to the Internet at younger and younger ages—a time when they are most vulnerable and susceptible to blasphemous viewpoints and suggestions.

Thou shalt not post materials of an offensive political nature.

Thou shalt not post materials concerning bestiality, including interracial relationships.
God did not intend for different species or races to intermingle sexually. Any content that contradicts this natural law, directly or indirectly, is strictly forbidden."
-----End Quotation-----

Give yourself a second to breathe here. Read these quotes again.

-----Beginning Quotation------
"As a result of this, we decided that the best way to write this document would be to model it after something that everyone knows and follows (or at least should!) in their daily lives already."

"Any material that would lead one astray from the righteous path of the one true God must not be permitted on the Internet."?
-----End Quotation-----

Is something not right here? I'm not against Christianity or Catholism or anything else related to God, but since when does religion control the internet? I understand the censorship of pornography, beastiality and hateful material but why is religion thrown into this?

Not to mention that the database seems to have questionable sites that are violate the "Internet Acceptable Use Policy". Each listing is the subject name, along with a link to its entry in the database:

- New England Patriots: [link]
- Google: [link]
- MySpace: [link]
- Hotmail: [link]
- eBay: [link]
- Nick Jr.: [link]
- Sesame Workshop: [link]

I mean these websites are pretty harmless. A search engine? eBay? Childrens' shows? A football team's website? Something isn't right here. Most of these sights are being accused of pornography and/or other offenses.

Feel these should be removed? Well that's pretty much impossible. I've looked into that on their "Contact NA" page. See here:
-----Begin Quotation------
"We Do Not Make Mistakes

One of the primary reasons people contact us is to notify us that they have been falsely accused of violating the Internet Acceptable Use Policy, and should be removed from our database. If that is why you wish to contact us, you can give up right now. Net Authority takes great care to investigate claims in full before including sites in our database. We guarantee 100% that each and every site we list is offensive in some way and a danger to our children.

Even if you have removed the offensive material, we will not remove your site from the database. We used to do this, but all too often we found that the material was vindictively re-added to the website some time after removal from our database. To protect ourselves and our children from such behaviour, we have implemented a no-removal policy."
-----End Quotation-----

I find it very odd. If "Net Authority takes great care to investigate claims in full before including sites in our database." as it says it does, then why are these sites here? Hotmail is a free email service. A football website is just related to a sport. eBay is jusy an online auction.

This all leads me to this question: Is this place just a troll site or just badly managed?

As I looked through the database there were deviant art user pages. Completly harmless pages which are deemed breaking of that "Internet Acceptable Use Policy". Is this just a tool used to harass other people across the world?

Now how this relates to policy. How do we deal with outside attackers? We have plenty of policies for what goes on in the website, but how do we deal with things that go on outside the website?

Um, you know it's just a prank, right? Basic idea is that despite how impossibly zealous something is, people will still believe that somebody actually thinks that.

If you ask me they are breaking their own code. And on the database page of dA, someone said they should just put "all of internet" because that is what they are doing.

Yup. Unfortunately though because of the very nature of the internet, you will always discover people/groups who want to control it and its content "for the good of others" regardless of the opinions of the "others" they are trying to protect. Best thing to do is avoid sites like this. I was actually a bit speechless that they seem to be ill-equipped to remove "blasphemous" content from their own site in the form of all those comments lol doesn't set a good example when their children can see such comments on their own site lol.
