Better Digital Photography Magazine-Free online

^kkart:iconkkart: reports, November 26
From the Publishers of "What Digital Camera" and "Amateur Photographer", IPC Media today has announced a new online photography magazine, "Better Digital Photography" that people can read free and fully online, it is also interactive with embedding video tutorials from the magazine and mouse-over tips. Aimed at the entry and intermediate level photographer, it is heavily devoted to equipment and technique-focused photography content.

From the IPC Media website:

Publishing director Alex Robb says: “This is an exciting and innovative new venture for the photo portfolio. The editorial team have worked incredibly hard to create bespoke content, including technique videos and other interactive content. I am delighted that we have secured distribution to around two million photographers to ensure that as many people as possible benefit from the excellent tips and advice. Better Digital Photography is a further indication of how IPC continues to innovate in this competitive sector.”

Editor Mat Gallagher adds: “We wanted to create a product that helps the reader expand their knowledge, while being easy to use. It is thanks to the talents of art editor Steve Crabb that we have managed to produce such a visually stimulating and accessible magazine that surpasses anything else in the market place.”

My thoughts, this is downright awesome and VERY well done, it is like looking at an actual magazine, but the fact that it has videos embedded within for tips, tutorials, and techniques, make this even better! You can also subscribe for free, via email for upcoming issues, make personal notes within the magazine, and download a copy to your hard drive. GO GET IT!

Metadata and Copyright Protection

^cosfrog:iconcosfrog: reports, November 22, 2007
Do you embed metadata on all your images you post? You should, this is fast becoming an inportant and intergal part of copyright protection. Yes it can be easyly removed by bad people intent on stealing your image, but this falls under the section I previosly wrote about. Removal of copyright information is also a crime and removing metadata is just as bad as removing a watermark. Honest people will see the metadata and know to stay away from an image when it is offered.

Its simple to do in photoshop (easiest is to click file info), you can even set up a template and have it done in a batch process. Or with some programs it can even be part of your import process from card to computer automatically.

There are of course problems with it. For instance when using the 'save for web' option in photoshop instead of 'save as'....this will strip all metadata out of your image. Well there is a partial fix for this now, apperantly (I have not tried it yet) there is a patch/upgrade for CS3 (10.0.1) that among other things allows you to check a box that will make the 'save for web' function at least save the xmp metadata (an adobe standard) but does not do so still for the IPTC fields (an international standard read by all programs) So still stick to 'Save as' but the upgrade does do other things helpful.

Also I just learned from this article in the ASMP newsletter [link] that apparently myspace will automatically strip all metadata out of the image upon uploading, on the basis of privacy. May have to rethink my use of myspace....

Readin this I decided to run some tests on the dA images I uploaded. I have found that all but the original size image you see in full view do indeed strip out the metadata. I hope that this can be looked into here and corrected. Some of the other sizes are still usable and should have the info kept in.

Dont let this prevent you from using this tool, espically if you post images to your own website

Bottom line as with all things in image protection it can be defeated by assholes intent on stealing art but it is another tool that is simple to use and makes more people aware of your copyrights.

Put in at least your name, copyright and contact info so that it travels with your images.

Why would metadata cause problems with privacy :O?

you're totally right about the metadata, it's a must if you publish your work on the internet. and indeed it's quite a simple thing to do.

And privacy problems, I don't know what got into the heads of those myspace guys...but I think you should decide for yourself, and it gets published on your page, so everyone will know it's yours... don't get them:P

If you use "save to web" you can use a tool like Exifer [link] to put it back onto the image, it does not add much to the file size, up to 11kb if memory serves me, have not used it for a long time, and it is an older program.

I realise that is not an overall solution but may help for peoples own web sites.

Metadata doesn't cause problems with privacy. Metadata has problems of its own since it can be striped from the image. For some reason it isn't a permanent part of the image in certain cases.

IrfanView is a great lightweight, FREE image viewer, able to display and change IPTC metadata.
Note that IPTC information is present only in Jpeg images.

Doing mostly B&W ink works, I use extensively the PNG format, which has its own metadata format, in form of tEXt chunks, with standard fields like Title, Author and Copyright, or custom ones.
Alas, currently IrfanView doesn't preserve these fields when modifying an image (resize, crop...), so I use another free software, TweakPNG, to add (and view) these fields. When I don't forget... :(
