The point of this holiday is to make people think about what they buy and how it affects the environment and the rest of the world. Some facts that are listed on the UK website include the fact that every Christmas, we throw away an extra 270,000 tons of packaging. For the people who didn't pay attention to math, that's 540,000,000 pounds. This is a lot, especially considering the fact that a lot of people in poorer countries are living in poverty and aren't enjoying the holidays. The developed countries of the world, which amounts for only 20% of the population, consume 80% of the world's natural resources. This is unfair to the other 80% of the world, and causes a huge imbalance of wealth. This is the point of Buy Nothing Day. You are supposed to think of how you influence the world with what you buy and consume, and how what you buy was probably made in sweatshops of developing countries, where labor laws don't exist. In the future, try to remember to think of what you buy and how it will influence the rest of the world, and how it was made.
