Stem Cells

~tehste:icontehste: reports, July 13
Friedreich's Ataxia is one of the most common forms of inherited ataxia. Ataxia litterally means "absence of order". Ataxia is the main symptom of a group of neurological disorders called the cerebellar ataxias. Parts of the nervous system that control co-ordination and balance deteriorate. I have FA and I am trying to raise enough money to have some stem cell treatment...

Journalists in Iraq

=AlexParlett:iconAlexParlett: reports, November 23, 2007
Its been a shocking few years for the journalism community around the world over the war in Iraq. Over the course of the conflict to present day, 235 have been killed in their involvement with the war.

The latest to date was Shehab Mohammad al-Hiti, editor of a new weekly paper, Baghdad al-Youm, was abducted and mudered in october, bring the total killed since March 2003 invasion to 235. The 27 year old editor, was last seen leaving his home in Baghdad to go to the paper's offices. Iraq security forces found his body later.

Also missing recently are Salih Saif Aldin, 32, a reporter for the Washington Post. He was killed while reporting in southern Baghdad. Shot once in the head, apparently at close range. Also an Iraqi correspondent for Radio Free Europe was reported missing on October 22, and has not been seen since, her name has not been released.

If you would all just take a moment for the family and friends of the journalists lost in the war, and remember their bravery of putting their lives on the line.

On a happier not, Iraqi journalist Tarik Ramadan has been released after being held by the Kurdish authorities in Sulaymaniyah in northern Iraq after nearly 3 years. He was never charged with any offense or given reason for his detention. He was aided by Slough based NUJ freelance photographer who had worked with Tarik, and organized the campaign for his release.

See, it's the knowledge that people do sympathize with your cause that makes me want to be a war correspondent.

Definately, its not quite as isolated as people think.

But that's the problem - that people instinctively assume that it's an isolated profession. We need more war correspondents in the field - at least, that's my opinion.

In that regard, id say yes and no, there are a lot out there, but the wars dont get the coverage, and so the photographers dont get the coverage. You can look at old wars such as the balklands wars, african wars, there are many in the hot spots that dont involve the major nations of the world, and as such dont get as much coverage in the newspapers, magazines, tv, internet that have the widest circulation.

I suppose you're right there, but with a larger influx of journalists to cover the areas with less media interest, it would produce that interest - which could save lives.

Definately, more involved would have an impact, but not as drastic, as sad as it is to say newspapers are run by people looking to make money, and for that they need ratings, and its the same reason why its not covered a great deal nowdays these wars that dont involve the "major nations" dont get the ratings or circulation so arent covered as much.

I suppose that's the inherent failing of human nature, that one is concerned with his own best interests before the needs of his brethren. It shows how sad a state our world is in today, does it not?

It does, most humans are not generally altruistic. For example, a murder in NY, 1 woman, being raped and murdered, over 300 witnesses, yet none went out there to help her or even called the police in time.

It's terrible that they are killing people, but especially the journalists. They are just people looking at what's happening, not active participants in the war! But then, I guess the old saying comes into effect, "Play with fire, and you're gonna get burnt."
