How to Commission an Artist

*ArynChris:iconArynChris: reports, November 16
A comprehensive guide to commissioning, based on my personal experiences and observations. This guide does not address hosting contests, nor does it specifically address the unique challenges of commissioning through specific websites, though some typical scenarios are mentioned in passing. Topics include choosing the artist, why it's important to make sure you can afford it, how to contact the artist, payment, what WIPs are and why you might want to see them, and legal rights of both parties. Legal rights are discussed at the beginner level and are NOT in depth here.

Supporting and informing deviants near you

=Talescaper:iconTalescaper: reports, November 25, 2007
Something that has been bothering me for quite some time, is the limited use of the international nature of deviantArt as a community as well as the community aspect as a whole. Of course we're having contests of our own and lots of deviants feature other deviants on a daily basis within the community. But we should be aware that there are also a lot of other possibilities lying right outside this website. Artcontests created by newspapers, possibilities for exhibitions and magazines begging for fresh artistic blood, all right there in your neighbourhood, your state or your country. DeviantArt could play an immense role in informing the creative people of the world about the things that happen in their surrounding and the possibilities provided for them. So why is it so difficult to use the community as it should be used?

Well, one of the reasons might be that deviantArt is indeed a very wide-spread community, with members from all over the world. Of course there are various club-accounts for most major countries, but they tend to be powerless and small, hardly even able to concentrate on promoting their members within the community, let alone providing them with information from outside. Another problem is that these communities usually are not really supported by the dA-staff. For what reason? I don't know.

So here is my suggestion to the deviantArt staff and the community as a whole: create a central, stable and effective base of support for local activities for and by deviants and artists in general. How to do this is open for debate, of course, and you're most welcome to debate this on the suggestions forum. It might be sufficient if the many people that keep dA running support the groups made for their countries and regions. Maybe it's necessary to establish new functions within the dA staff, allowing some influential deviants to become a sort of ambassadors for their country. It will be necessary to have one single base for each region. So for example, not three different clubs for France, unless these clubs focus on different regions of France in which case there should also be a club for France as a whole.

Either way, helping deviants to become more familiar with whatever it means to be an artist 'in the real world' can only make this website and community better and more fun.

Nice idea, but i don't think its possible on the scale your suggesting, people don't have the time to set things like this up and manage them. You can always support local events in a news article like this one.
:iconajglass:
Another problem is that these communities usually are not really supported by the dA-staff.

I've seen that the dA staff are very supportive of clubs and art communities here on dA - both domestic and international.

However, there are only so many dA staff members and they are far outnumbered by the number of users on this site. So they are very busy just keeping this site up and running and dealing with legal/technical/user-related issues.

Thus, it's up to those of us not on staff, who have the time to promote the arts, to do so.

Yeah. But to be effective, people will need a central, reliable point to go to for information. The Artist Relations team is already working on something like that for inside the community (Project: EDUCATE).

That's exactly what I'm talking about! Let people know what's going on in your area. If there's an art-contest anywhere, a big chunk of the participants should be deviants.

For example: There was a big amateur artcontest in Holland recently, but when I made an article about it here on dA, only five people noticed, while I know that there are lots of Dutch deviants. If there had been a central point for Dutch members of this site to see that there was an artcontest in their country, much much more would have applied, I think.

One method would be to create a "Captain" for every country
The captain appoints his staff from regions within the country.
They contact editors of newspapers and television stations
and submit items of interest.

The items could be anything from a christmas greeting card from the DA xmas card project to a photo from a region that has undergone a natural disaster.

The mobilization of such a network could be a great boost to DA and all participation deviants.

Get Moonbeamola to coordinate this as her abilities are second only to the klown with pony armz.

or not--
:icontalescaper:
I think you got me the other way around :D I'm talking more in the lines of deviants looking at the news and media and informing their fellow deviants on interesting opportunities and developments.
