reports, July 16The winners of the Breaking Free contest have been announced! Amongst the entries were a daily deviation, a news feature and many stunning pieces of space art. The aim of my contest was take a piece I had rendered in Vue 6 and manipped a smoketrail into, and "spacify it" - that is use it as a stock to make a space related piece of art.

reports, November 28, 2007I just received information about this essay this evening, and couldn't find the appropriate URL for it on Habitat's site; therefore I'll be posting it here. Habitat World, a monthly magazine published by Habitat for Humanity, is announcing an essay contest in which the winner receives a free trip to the 2008 Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project in New Orleans, Louisiana. This is quoted directly from the magazine:
If your essay is selected, Habitat World will pay your air transportation and event fees, which include modest daily accomodations and meals. The winning essayist is expected to work a full day at the build site during each of the five work ddays, scheduled for May 11-16, 2008.
The essay topic: In 500 words or less, describe why you choose to volunteer for and/or donate to Habitat for Humanity.
No forms are necessary; simply e-mail your essay to habitatworld@habitat.org or mail to Habitat World Essay Contest, 121 Habitat St., Americus, GA 31709. Please include your name, address, and phone number. All essays are due by midnight Dec. 31 2007, Eastern Standard Time.
You must be at least 18 years old to participate. If selected, you will be responsible for obtaining the requisite immunizations and travel documents, including a visa and passport if neccessary.

The first time I went to New Orleans was actually the summer before Katrina. We were repainting houses in bad neighborhoods; it was the week that radically changed the course of my life and introduced me to my best friend.
I was able to return this summer to gut houses... so much more needs to be done. I love that city second only to my home, Chicago.
