Sex and sexuality in art are some of my favorite things, and certainly sometimes arousal is part of this, but more importantly, it is FAR MORE than about simple arousal, as porn is. One of my deviantart friends, :iconcypherthepanicartist: , said that art of a sexual nature can “ provoke thoughts about our dreams, fears, desires, and place in the world"...yes! Well done art that deals with sex exposes the soul of the subject or act in question, not just the naughty bits. I feel that any kind of work on this site that looks at sexuality in a thoughtful or artistic or critical or celebratory, etc. way is certainly appropriate content for an art site, because, of course, this work is actually ART.

Analysis of the True Artist

^Katmomma:iconKatmomma: reports, December 1, 2007
Like scientists, true artists are constantly finding ways to solve problems. They are on a mission of self enlightenment, and the only way to get there, is to gain experience. They are actively studying the world around them and taking insight from people they know and work with. Anything and everything can be an inspiration for a true artist. They are never limited in what they can do and they never limit themselves from it either. True artists are always looking to improve their work and diversify it at the same time.
Now, I’ve critiqued quite a few people in the past week, and I’ve seen the same old run-around with comments.
“Good job!”
“Nice coloring”
“Cute!”
That’s all fine and dandy; I will admit, I say some of these things myself. However, sometimes I look back at the artwork and I can’t find myself agreeing. I write:
“The legs are a little too short. The pose seems awkward and off balance. Your perspective is a little off….”
Then, twenty minutes later; the artist expresses their insult to me, and they say the worst thing they could have ever said.
“That’s just my style.”
To me, that statement alone is like saying… it is permanent, it will never change, it is set in stone, it is how it should be. –But, this contradicts the definition of a true artist. This artist is limiting their artistic ability by chaining themselves to only one style. A true artist would have had a much better reply.
“Yeah, I kind of agree. I’ll work on it. Thanks for the tip!”

Another common thing I see amongst artists on Deviant Art is over excessive fan-art, and I most often see it with anime artists. Now, fan-art is not all a bad thing; it is actually a great way for a blossoming true artist to learn and experiment with other artists styles. It is also a portale for accomplished true artists to impose their own style on someone else’s character design. Fan- art is a beautiful thing and it’s a lot of fun…until it starts to get repetitive.
When I see people who constantly draw someone else's character over and over again, and proclaim themselves to be artists…it's kinda sad. Sure, they can draw that character, but what else can that person draw? How do I know that person isn’t tracing or copying the same pose from the comic book? Are they really ‘growing’ as an artist would? Again, this all boils down to the person limiting their artistic capability. They are not a true artist.
In addition to being flexible and diverse, the true artist’s ultimate goal is to become unique. The only way to do this is through experience and maturity. A true artist should have the maturity to make appropriate decisions, and the experience to apply their abilities to their artwork. Once they have defined and refined their style several times over, they will have the right to call themselves an ‘accomplished’ true artist. However, it doesn’t end here. No matter how old they are or how many pieces they have completed, the true artist never stops growing and learning. They will find themselves defining and refining their styles until the day they lay to rest for the very last time.

So please share with me—an example of a ‘true artist” you know. Why do you say so? What do you think they have learned?
Do you think you’re a ‘true artist’? share with me what you have learned in growth.

I pretty much agree with everything :)

I'm a fanartist, but I draw other things though ;P

And I love critique, I think it's a shame that some people don't accept it and take it as an insult.

I've received the "It's my style" answer more than once, and it's just annoying...

I agree with you for the most part, ~Katmomma. ;) The only part where I slightly disagree is your take on fanart. I agree that when someone keeps drawing the same repetitive fanart and characters, they certainly aren't learning anything. But, drawing the same characters over and over again encourages consistency and solidarity in an artist's style. I know you have your set of characters which you draw repeatedly, as do I. Speaking for myself, I am always tweaking characters in order to get them closer to my view of perfection for them.

Of course I admit that I tend to draw a lot of the same things over and over. It's hard for me to be entirely creative sometimes, yet I feel that drawing fanart of other peoples' characters helps me try something new. I can't think of any "true artists" like you mean right off the bat, though I can definitely say that since joining deviantART, I have steadily gotten better and closer to the "true artist" status.

That being said, I've learned so much just through exposure to other styles about correct proportions, anatomy, lines, shading, etc. etc. etc. For example, compare this old piece (Jak fanart) to one of my newest pieces. You can obviously see improvement. Heeding the advice beyond "nice colors" and "great job!" has allowed me to gradually get better.

I try all the time to leave appropriate comments, and also thank artists for their critical input. Without critique, one cannot improve.

Great news article, by the way. ;)

yup i agree with ya....for the first part your right...cuz if you stick with one style it tends to get stale really fast...so stoping at one style isn't really a good thing even if your art looks super....all art styles can be improved one way or another
on the second note....your right cuz if you keep doing just fan art ppl will start to git the idea that your just a copyin machine and just tracein anything that looks good....which will give ya a bad rap in the long run.....like my mom has always taught me "traceing is not art....

....whew that sure is a lot i wrote there...srry for my gammer lol

Yes, I do the same thing you do with your characters :) I repeatedly draw the same characters over and over again---BUT-- I also do things that are completely different: artworks that you couldn't tell were mine. As long as he person can diversify--they can call themselves an artist....What I was talking about, are people who draw nothing but the same character over and over again--and the character isn't their own. If they can do other work too, that's great! For some reason I've always liked drawing Mr. Hollingsworth--he's like my guinea pig for anything new I pick up XD --and he's just fun to draw.

As for fan art--I did say it is a good thing for artists who are exploring their styles (blossoming artists) and an occasionally great thing for accomplished artists to showcase their style with someone else's characters. However, It's just not good to call yourself an accomplished artist--when that is all that you're capable of doing. You should be able to make something on your own too.

Loved this. you are very right. It's true that fanart is fun and some people are exceptionally talented who do fanart...but it is not original or unique...it's as if people who do only fanart have no idea of who they are as an artist...as if they can only draw something that others have already put thought into. Now i admit to being a fan of Phantom of the Opera and i have bits of fanart...but then again the majority of my work is of my characters, my concepts, and my design. In my opinion, it's good to have some fanart as long as you back it up with other personal creations.

A few people who i think are great artists are Ravenhaven (beautiful landscapes and scenes), Edducttape (always experimenting with styles and methods of art), Red-Phantom (you can tell he works hard on anatomy and structure), and you! (very original characters and a flare for beautiful shading) plus many people from my watchlist are very talented (Jianre-m, stylin-yellow-pup, Davidstrife, ariannuke, defcon79, hassanah, foxtrot-wolfwhistle...i could name probably twenty, but that'd take forever. but i will (as you know) be describing all their talents in my journals! XD)
