Can role-playing help against depression?

~freeartist:iconfreeartist: reports, December 5, 2007
Role-playing

Many teenage people also people from ages 10 - 40 can feel lonely and left out, life does not feel good enough. Sometimes even makes them take their own life. Role-playing can be the answer, getting into another world. Do not just mean walk out in a forest dressed as an elf. I am talking about msn chatting , chatting in general can release stress.

We have talked to some people and asked theme their opinion on Role-playing.

Mike age 19:

Hmm I think you can release stress and depression yes, and I bet it can make the person feels better too. the reasons are mostly because you can control what happens, unlike life you cannot control life. But you can control your characters it gives you a feeling of power. Like you are a god and the world , for those who believe in it, you have your characters , so, yes I think it can help express emotions.

GenkiDeNe age 20 (non-DA member)

It's not strange at all and it seems true. role playing allows the player to imagine, live and act in a fictional world that the player or some else has created. the world you choose to live in is based on what you are interested in so of course it will reduce stress since you thereby don't have to think and consider problemens that are affecting your life.

Stephanie age 18

Hmmm well it's possible but not always. Role playing by its nature allows you to connect with other people which can help with depression but there's also another downside role playing could be used as an escape which isn't good. The person may feel good for a while but it could be used potentially for avoidance. The person doesn't deal with the depression or situations outside the game and that isn't healthy. It might be a temporary release but it won't solve the problem.

Some extreme examples teenagers has been stuck in this world, been vampires every single day of their life, or start feeling as the character. Some even hear voices.

But many stay fine and feel fine, and some look forward to this everyday. It makes them feel good about them self.

[link] < What is role playing can be found here, a quite from Wikipedia says:

" In roleplaying, participants adopt and act out the role of characters, or parts, that may have personalities, motivations, and backgrounds different from their own.

Roleplaying is like being in an improvisational drama or free-form theater, in which the participants are the actors who are playing parts, and the audience."
- Wikipedia.

To finally end this news , we think role playing in smart portions can help against stress, just never let it get out of hand, contact nearest help center for addiction.

Remember , it excist an entire world inside our minds.

I'd say RPing is running away from reality in a way so although it might help some people, it doesn't really fix the problem:shrug:

I personally don't find it attractive at all, but to each their own, right :3

My opinion is split, it can help some, if they take care of the problem making them depressed, then fine. But avoiding it does not help.

I suggest seek help for depression, then maybe some role play.

It may be an escape, but at least it involves interacting with other people rather than being totally isolated. :)

I've been an extreme before, where I don't want to come out of my little world because of depression, but my friends (both online and off) have helped me cope and got me out into the real world. I still RP a lot but Now I only do it because its fun and i love the stories. It helps keep up my creativity and keeps me from being lonely when I can't go hang out with my friends or when i'm sick.
I really like this article, thank you. :3 It helped my fiance understand why I do what I do. <3

Of course, as someone taking up Psychology, emersing yourself in too much of role playing can make you think that "that" is your reality.

Role-play once in awhile. Besides, there are other ways of reducing stress.

Role-playing can in many ways be seen as an escape from the everyday stress and problems. Because that's what most people are after, right? A chance to escape the problems in their own life?

Through Role-playing, there is the opportunity to go in and try being a character they created (or in some cases; others created) and see how that would be. Mary-Sue-ism (I.e. perfect in almost every way) can at times be common, as that is what some are after; the chance to try being someone who have no troubles to worry about.

It's mostly a psychological act, it can help release stress, anger and nervousness. It can give a new view of things and a fair bit more.

Online forum Role-playing communities often have a positive effect, specially on the online youth. About 90% (Guess what? Number set five seconds ago, but close to the true thing) of people in the age 13-25 who Role-play online have a better grammar than some groups of other people. Usually, there is little or no use of online slangs, or lacking punctuations in text-based Role-playing community.

Although, from some people's point of view, it can be seen as an odd act. After all, it is the act of taking on another role in order to escape our own lives we're speaking of here. But in any case, it can be good, as long as it doesn't go too far, and the ones involved are able to separate reality from fiction.

So both Yes and No to the whole debate about this being a good thing or not.

Yes; it can help against depression, stress and most forms of trouble.

No; it won't help if the ones involved immerse themselves too much, some might even attempt to be the character the play, even in their real life.
