The Relaionship Between Art and Religion: Volume

*DAReligiousForum:iconDAReligiousForum: reports, December 7, 2007
:firelite-photo: ART AND RELIGION

Art and Religion are inseparatable. This means that art and religion are closely related because they both deal with the quest for man's self-understanding. It may be that art is the means by which many people are introduced into what are essentially religious or theological problems. It is with these boundary-line situations that so much art deals-that is, with the problems of death, pain, guilt, and struggle. This is because in these situations we become aware of those basic contradictions and antinomies, which are supremely characteristic of human existence. The question "Who am I?" is asked with respect to the boundary-line experiences and not with respect to some timeless essence. The amount of interest in the Religious Arts in increasing as sensitive young men and women seek in the arts some answers to the question of their self-identity.

So, this being said, I present to you the featured deviations of the man men and women, both young and not so young, of the files of deviantArt :

:firelite-photo: DA Religious Forum Club Forum Threads:

The DA Religious Forum Club Forum has been founded as a place for interested parties to discuss, praise, or debate Religious subjects and world philosophies. It has been formed as an experimental model for discussion, as a prelude for asking the DA Admins for an officially presented DA Religious Form to join the ranks of the other DA Forum Debate Rooms.

 [link] Rules of Engagement

We encouragement all of our valued Members to use the DA Religious Forum Club Forum, however, unlike other Forums we have a much stricter set of rules of use that we call "The Rules of Engagement" , and they will be enforced.

If you cannot be civil in your responses or posts, then we encourage you to seek other discourses. That does not mean that you cannot disagree with someone's post, it just means that you cannot attack someone personally. This will be a diplomatically oriented attempt at religious debate, and a safe haven for those who wish to participate.

Any violations of deviantART's etiquette and Forum posting regulations shall be reported, without exception, and dealt with according to the adjudication of the DA Administrations.

We hope that you may enjoy this Forum.

"Art and Religion are inseparable."

Don't agree, art strives beyond religion. Which is the release of man, not the compass by which art is guided.

Art will chose a theme, but not it need to be religious. I find this very annoying. Self discovery is not religious, its human. Inspiration comes from everything including poo.

I love this a lot. I agree, as in order for me to express how I feel about my religion I tend to turn towards art both drawing and looking.

They go hand in hand that's undeniable!

Who knows where inspiration comes from. Perhaps it arises from desperation. Perhaps it comes from the flukes of the universe, the kindness of the muses.

"Art and Religion are inseparable."

The hell it is. The initial intention of art was communication long before the written language came into being. It has nothing to do with religion aside from the fact that there are some rather lovely RELIGIOUSLY INSPIRED artworks and that those artworks were predominantly used for illustrating to the common masses the stories of religion, ie, communication - it's basic anthropology there. Sure there are some who think of their artwork as an expression of their faith and understanding of themselves as you've described but it's foolish to generalise all art under the same presumption.
*jennabee25:iconjennabee25: Dec 7, 2007, 7:28:34 PM
I do agree with this statement insomuch that religion certainly has inspired a lot of art, especially in antiquity. Most medieval European art was commissioned by the church, including paintings, architecture, and sculpture. Southeast Asian cultures made beautiful statues of their temple guardians. Look at the illustrations of Hindu deities.

Religion still inspires art today, but there is a lot out there that isn't religious, too. I do like the idea of exploring the religious side of art, though!

I actually would assign a considerably more fundamental role to religion, as it pertains to art. Your religion (or irreligion) is your outlook, your world view (Weltanschauung). A person may not realize it, but the type of art, the way he expresses himself artistically, is formed by who he is, and who he is is best expressed in his outlook. Everything has religious implications. We are fundamentally a religious species, or as can be explained in rather trivial terms, we have a God-shaped hole we have to fill. If we don't fill it with one thing, we will fill it with another. Whatever we fill it with is our religion. Some people may scoff as those here have done, but they're just displaying THEIR world view. It gets down to the fundamental question often, whether you look at things darkly or with joy. Do you do dark art, or violent art, or porn? This all has religious implications, even if you don't think it does.
