About Art and We Artists

~DancesWithHorses:iconDancesWithHorses: reports, December 8, 2007
It happens often. I will go to my inbox and see a journal post or reply from some poor artist here at DA, saying that their parents (most often) or other loved ones think that art is a waste of time and there will never be any money in it.

It always echoes what I heard growing up. And it always made me angry.

You don't have to work in a factory or mill, and you don't have to have a high rise office to make money. There are millions of other jobs in this world that do pay - and pay well. Someone designs ketchup commercials. Someone paints Christmas cards. Someone, somewhere, molds model horses. (Kathleen Moody, anyone?) And guess what? They get paid for it.

I won't waggle a finger at anyone's parents. It's not my place. But it is infinitely sad to see those that are responsible for nurturing and development stifle what could be a great and talented artist.

As I've said many times, non-art folks just don't seem to understand, for the most part. I won't say all. Some do. Most don't. How many times have you run in to this? You spend hours and hours working on a gift for someone and they open it, and they get that characteristic "eww, I don't like this" frown for a moment and you get the vapid "thank you" from between clenched teeth? Shame on them, and I'll tell you why.

I love history. I study it all the time. I love the history channel. Do you know what it taught me? It taught me what endures and stands the test of time. What do we have left, today, of the ancient great civilizations? Well, we'd have a lot more of their literature if it weren't for an ancient fire, but we do have their literature, their teachings, relics, architecture, and - guess what? Art. It teaches us about their value and their culture, and it teaches us how they viewed the world. Historians consider it extremely important. They can trace the entire history of art back to stone-aged man. Written language only goes back as far as the hieratic, cuneiform and hieroglyphics. This tells us that as human beings, as a world and as culture, that art is far, far more important than some would like to believe. Pity them. They may love you and want what is best for you, but they have a lack of perspective most likely resulting in a lack of higher education - or they weren't listening in college Western Civilization, which is a fascinating course in any school.

Art is important, fellow artists. It is very, very important. It defines us and our society. It tells others what we listen to, what we think like, how we grow and how we perceive. It is a higher calling of a higher nature. We bring true emotion to our world, and we bring beauty, perspective, and thought. If you can get one person to think about something with one of your pieces, then you have achieved your calling.

We should be the harbingers of humanity, treated with respect and appreciation. But, as you already know, most often we are not. Consider this, then... I can almost guarantee that every artist here on DeviantArt has gone through the same thing at some point. We all understand. Here then, we are among our true peers, and those that know what it means to be an artist in today's world. Find comfort here, and whatever you do, don't stop drawing.

-Sherece

Wonderful article, if a bit arrogant. But then, I understand.

Here's a little anecdote of mine on the subject (or it would be little if I didn't enjoy writing so much): My father and his mother are both talented artists, but neither one was ever able to make much profit off of their work. Though my father encouraged my artistic side, he advised me not to view art as a profession. I turned to other interests instead - science and animal care - but I was very uncertain. Sure, those choices fascinated me, but I honestly had very little confidence in my own potential in those areas. My skills lay in story-telling and art.

After we graduated from college together, my best friend - who had started out uninterested in art but learned to love it and catch up with my own level of skill very quickly - enrolled in the Art Institute of Portland, choosing to major in animation.
This left me even more uncertain about my own choices, until one day almost a year later, my father witnessed me working on a piece of art in photoshop. Suddenly, he said, "you know, maybe you should seek a profession in art after all..."
He likes to describe the way my face lit up when I turned to look at him.
I am now reaching the end of my first term at the Art Institute, living in the same apartment as my best friend. We are both very excited by the direction our lives are going right now.

You rock dude. Totally took the words out of my mouth.

Yah, my parents think its 'cool' when I do a piece of art, but I can tell they don't really appreciate it for what it is.

My dad is always telling me not to get to attatched to dA, but I can't help it! Everyone here understands me as an artist because they're all artists too! I love seeing comments from people who like my art, and I love commenting on other people's art.

Ok, so my art isn't the as good as you, or the one artist I totally idolize (*PearlEden), but still! It's my art, and I love it the way it is.
So, thank you so much for posting this newsletter, because it will show the people on dA that only look at our art that we are not just doodlists that love to paint by number.

:iconyob:
one of the saddest times in my life was when an admired art teacher told me that I cannot draw, that my lines weren’t strong enough and that I didn’t shadow enough, it hurt me deeply that someone who I thought at that point in my life was the greatest artist out, told me I sucked at something I love.
A good friend of mine suggested that we swap an art project and see what happens, and while I got my normal 22% on my test my friend got a nice round 100% and a pat on the back, we never mentioned it to the teacher but the entire class knew.

As a result for a long time after that I had no confidence in my art or myself, and it’s only just lately that I'm beginning to regain confidence to believe that I can draw anything. :D
anybody who pushes any kind of talent down needs a serious talking to, to tell a child who see's adults as the answer to everything and takes in words like the gospel. That they are, stupid, lacking in talent, or any other stupid thing like that can have serious affects on the mental growth, we as people spend more time at school growing up then we do growing up at home.
It’s taken a very long time to outgrow what happened to me at school.
Without art there is no culture, no growth, and overall boring look to our books and world :D

Very true, half my family says "Don't waste your life on such poor costs as art."
