We've featured 65 poems since we opened our satellite account in 2007! Another one of the poems we featured received a DD before we had a chance to post it, so we posted two features this week. View the most recent feature here, as well a list of all the previous poems featured by TFP. If you like what you see, than devwatch the account because we feature a new one every week! It seems that art is very popular on here. But the question is: What do people consider art and what do people not consider art? Also, is it possible that many of us have a very narrow point of view when it comes to art?
What I have come across in the past couple years that I have been on deviantart is that it is a very good place for artists to be promoted. It is easy for many ARTISTS to get attention for THEIR work. However, I have also found that writers tend to have less pageviews than traditional artists and photographers. It seems to me that many people simply do not want to take the time to read their work. Maybe they just don't think that writing is an art form. But let me ask this question: Isn't there creativity in writing? Don't people express themselves through THEIR writing?
Now depending on your definition of art, you can either believe writing is or isn't art. But, you cannot deny that writing is a form of expression. And many people use it to express their creativity. Are we ready to support writers as much as we are ready to support artists and photographers?
The question we must ask ourselves is whether or not we are ignoring writers. Because from what I've seen they have been ignored in comparison to artists and photographers etc.
I have seen many writers with quite a few pageviews though. So really, it may or may not depend on the category they put most of their art in. I just want to know: How bias are we when it comes to our views of art?
Humans have increasingly short attention spans. Writing takes more time to appreciate.

I think they are that is why I decided to cross over into Visual Poetry, plus I often post in the forums and go out and visit other deviants and spotlight in my journals other poets so that helps too.

Writing is definitely an art form. For me personally I can see many visual pieces and have a fun 5 or 10 minutes on the web.
Writing takes more time you think about it you savor it. You want to (at least i do) want to be comfortable. Most written work on the web is in such a format it's not comfortable or it requires more free time than one may have at the time.
So perhaps the real challenge to writers for the web is to think about how to make the experience more enjoyable and has nothing to do with the work itself.

The cure for boredom is curiousity. There is no cure for curiosity.
Considering that some people that come here don't spend more than 3 seconds viewing someone else's paintings, and most of the time don't bother to read a 2-line description...
It doesn't impress me that writers don't get much attention

Rather than lamenting that writers don't receive as much attention as visual artists, why don't you try featuring some writing that you feel is worthy of peoples' attention and maybe a little about why we should take the time to partake of it? This, in my opinion, would be more constructive to your cause.
then again, some people have the tendency to skip over the writings that pop up in their deviation counter.

I think your observations are accurate Kate. People, especially artists such as photographer and painters etc, tend to be VERY visual. Speaking just for myself, I find it very hard to read something. Usually though, when i take the time, I am happy I did.
I am not sure what can be done about it. I think that it comes down to the differences between people. There are individuals who would much rather read something then look at a bunch of pictures. I know a few, but by far, I think there are more people who naturally are drawn to images rather than the written word.
I am not sure if it is related to a time crunch. Certainly for myself that is not the case. I simply hate reading and possibly that is because I have had to do so much of it in my work.
Someone above noted that it takes more time to appreciate written art, than a picture. And that is true, however, in my opinion, that should not deter writers Your art form is valid, you should continue to express it. It will be appreciated by some and not others. But that has more to do with the differences between people, than the value of your work.
First off, everyone here at deviantART would like to say THANK YOU!!! We have received an overwhelming amount of enthusiasm for the launch of version 6 and believe that this has been our best-received launch to date.
You might even be one hell of a profesional, but if you don't SHOW it and PROVE it, how will everyone know? These facts are important not only when you are looking for a job, but in any situation when you wish to showcase your work. I decided to share a few guidelines that might help you give the best of yourself and help you be a better profesional.

As mentioned by someone else above.
It takes time to read, not so much to just look at something.
