Art Theives: The Do's, Don'ts, and Tell-Me-How's

~CursedMoonlight:iconCursedMoonlight: reports, December 9, 2007
We all know art Theives are around.

Many of us may have been affected by them.

There are a few major ways that art theives attain your art:

-Downloading
-Right clicking and saving
-Photobucket
-Imageshack

Photobucket and downloading are big ones when it comes down to what gets stolen and what doesn't.

Disable Download on all pictures. Do NOT disable it on Flash, Media, Audio, or large files that need it to be veiwed.

Some people have photobucket accounts, and post their art there. If you do NOT put your profile as "Private", your pictures will be there for the world to see and save to their own potobucket albums.
This works for Imageshack, as well.

DO NOT::
-Give permission to random people to use/copy/reproduce your art. You do not know who this will come to, and when someone says "Oh, I got permission" Can you be sure you gave them that permission?
-Think that it's no big deal and let them have it. It IS a big deal, and it's against the law and policies on dA.

DO::
-Disable Download
-INVESTIGATE! Figure out who's using your art, or who wants it.
-Give your e-mail. Let them contact you, so they can ask permission.

I want to use some Art, how do I get permission?
-E-mail the artist. Be polite, and please use correct grammar. This is a great way to get a good impression.
-Have a clean background in the sites you're on. Have proof that you're honest and good. TELL the artist if you've been banned for art theivery, tell them all that information. They don't want to be ripped off.
-Accept "No." Don't be persistant. This annoys the artist, and makes them want to help you even less!

What is okay in Copyright laws?
-Get permimssion to display art. Do not gain any profit from it.
-Give VERY CLEAR credit to the artist. Bold print if necessary. Make sure it is EASY to be seen. Small print is no good. YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE TO POINT IT OUT TO ANYONE.
-If using someone else's art, do NOT gve permission for anyone to use it. Refer them to the artist themself.
-If you use it as a personal background on your desktop, do NOT claim it as yours or otherwise call it yours.

What is not okay?
-Making profit off of art and not giving the artist and royalties
-Displaying art without permission
-Calling the artwork yours or removing the copyright or watermark

If you want artwork and the artist says "No", ask if He/She does requests. If they do, have them make you a peice. Have them make you a chatacter, if you so desire.

What is the difference from Recolors to Non-Recolors?

Recolors are the exact picture with different colors, and very, very small differences.

Non-recolors are pictures that look very different and you cannot tell which sprite/picture it was derived from if it is pixel art. It is an original Idea, as in instead of "Sonic the Hedgehog" Your character could be "Bolivarr the Rakali (Water Rat)" Do not take that example, as Bolivarr the Water Rat is actually a character of mine.

I'm on myspace/bebo, and someone is using art from dA/art website/my art. What do I do?!

-Tell them it's stolen work. If they didn't know, forgive them and help them get artwork of their own.
-Notify the artist if they snap at you, or say they got permission.
-If the artist gave them permission but you din't see clear credit, say it is necessary and have the person put it up.
-If the person refuses, tell the artist. Notify the site. Tell them that so-and-so is not cooperating, and has stolen art.
-Get help! Get other users to help your case!
-Be persistant! Persistance is key!
-Explain to the theif that it hurts you that your art was stolen. If they have any sympathy, they'll be sorry. Offer to draw them a picture, just for them. Be niec to them, prove that you're a good person. If you do this, then less people wll steal your art and dismantle it. Instead, you can try to motivate them to practice and try hard.

Do not ever worry about this matter. You have dA behind you, and copyright laws. If anyone needs help, please note me or e-mail me at cursedmoonlight@gmail.com

Very well written, and yes, we need to do something about art thieves. Credit is a necessity, not an option.

in all actuallity there is no reason to be stealing snything, no matter what
:iconcursedmoonlight:
That is so true. There is allways a way to prevent that from happening, however... As this article states.

if someone has experience, it is a peice of cake, I've experimented around to try to understand them, after a few tryies I managed to get most things no matter how well protected(I had my friend put up some of her pictures and defend as good as possible, and my friend is a major computer whiz, if I beat him, think of what a true pro can do
:iconcursedmoonlight:
Yeah... It does get stolen, but there are ways to help prevent it.
