DENYING THE POVERTY DRAFT-THE SOLDIER AS A SYMBOL

=whitetrashpalace:iconwhitetrashpalace: reports, 22h 59m ago
The Poverty Draft, Politics, Symbols, and the inconvenience of being human.

Even in times of war, the Soldier as an individual is of no consequence. The Soldier is a symbol, a simple pawn in a culture war. The Soldier is either a villain, or a Hero. The Soldier always serves for the honor of his country, not his paycheck. The Soldier is faithful, as there are 'no atheists in the trenches'. The Soldier is Combat Arms. The Soldier is male, he married a young white girl, and he has a baby on the way, whom he has never met.

The Soldier is a romantic ideal.

A Feminist Perspective on Questionable Images

~sick-snowangel:iconsick-snowangel: reports, July 1
Sex and sexuality in art are some of my favorite things, and certainly sometimes arousal is part of this, but more importantly, it is FAR MORE than about simple arousal, as porn is. One of my deviantart friends, :iconcypherthepanicartist: , said that art of a sexual nature can “ provoke thoughts about our dreams, fears, desires, and place in the world"...yes! Well done art that deals with sex exposes the soul of the subject or act in question, not just the naughty bits. I feel that any kind of work on this site that looks at sexuality in a thoughtful or artistic or critical or celebratory, etc. way is certainly appropriate content for an art site, because, of course, this work is actually ART.

Graffiti: Art or Vandalism?

~jjankk:iconjjankk: reports, July 7
This is an extremely old article from 2005 but I found it interesting.
It explains how some graffiti artists began to sell their art for money. There are people in the world who think that graffiti is art and not vandalism and other who feel the opposite way. I feel like graffiti is a work of art and should not be banned or should not be against the law. Even though I consider graffiti art I don't think it should be sold to galleries and to people. I think graffiti was meant for the streets and that's where it should stay. What's your opinion on this topic?

Stories and FanFiction: Originality VS Bandwagon

~CursedMoonlight:iconCursedMoonlight: reports, December 10, 2007
Everyone has read fanfics. Everyone has their own aspects to the subject.

Some fanfiction has the same run-of-the-mill idea. The original character falls in love with the copyrighted character, and so on and so forth. Or, the copyrighted character acts against what their personality is.

Originality is taking small, simple details and elaborating on them YOUR way. Example, Sonic the Hedgehog.

If you saw a story where Sonic the Hedgehog falls in love with the original character and it's kind of boring, because Sonic turns against all beleifs he has in his games, what would you say?

But if you saw a story like one I've read by :icontulangel:, Sonic keeps hs personality. Her characters have beautifully enriched pasts and histories, making them a marvel all to themselves. They all have family trees, relations, and are simply lovely to read about. There may be a few nice twists on Sonic and Shadow et cetera, but not many. Sonic ultimatly stays himself, and gives for a good plotline in all her stories.

Also, by :iconallhailshadow:, There is a story bewteen to of her characters. Sonic does not appear much in this at all, proving the fact that she's developed a whole world of her own. Like TULAngel, the twists are small but sweet, and fun to read.

In :iconzonerobotnik:'s stories, she has planets, worlds, kingdoms, and everything that's hers. She puts so much creativity into her writing, you really can't tell the difference from published, Top selling stories and her own. So many characters fit here and unlock this, It's amazing to see just who fits with what.

The point I'm getting at here is that the more you elaborate on your cahracters, and the less on the original characters, the more interesting the story will be, and more pleasing to the general public. Like :iconstevehedgehog: has said,

"Once apon a time, back in 1998 I was a young boy with MS paint and some sonic sprites. I took the idea to make a fan character because it was when it was just starting out. I took my paint bucket and created Steve. I grew fond of him right away, and thus wanted to make a story. My first thoughts were what everyone else was doing, and I thought it was making there own story's from scratch. I was SO wrong. I went out and took some time, I had a good story going for me! No sonic, robotnik, Nothing from sonic whatsoever! I thought I was doing such a great job and wanted to share with the community. I was and am the only person of my kind."

There are many stories here that have nothing to do with Sonic whatsoever, excet the fact that the general concept of their cahracter design are the same. Take me, for instance. My character Jackson Mo'heir the Hedgehog/Ring-tailed lemur is an Irish sailer, who's doomed for life under sail with a wretched captain. No sonic, so Eggman, none of that.

It all boils down to one thing. Elaborate more on your characters, and don't change what's already there too much. It's alright to tweak it a little, that's always fun. Sometimes, it's fun to give past and reasons that the games and movies may never, or will never explain. Sometimes, it's fun to pair up a character with yours. But don't change the character (Like Sonic) so much that it's unbearable.

hmmm... I'm glad you find fan fiction interesting enough. I would seriously consider reading all of their fics. You make them sound so inspiring. And what more to a writer than to have more inspiration :3

I would kinda like to promote someone else's fan fiction that I believe you might find tasteful. (mine XD) but it's about my main character.

:iconblue-potion: I seriously ask that you at least glance at it. I tried my best to get you immediately sucked into the story. Even on the account I'm using, you could read some of the fanfiction, I think you might like it. As for me, I might have a lot of reading to do with all of these great fics you're talking about ^^
