Printmaking Series Two - Intaglio Printing II

^stigmatattoo:iconstigmatattoo: reports, July 12
Printmaking produces images with visual qualities that are very different from those obtained through drawing or painting directly, and each technique adds its own peculiarities to the way each piece is conceived. However, with its odd and alchemical combinations of unusual materials, specific tools and enormous machines, Printmaking is often a strange and foreign territory even for artists accustomed to studio work on other disciplines.

Traditional Art Is Dead

*t001:icont001: reports, December 12, 2007
What Happened..??

Where I live in considered an "art" town, although it is small... it is very centered around art. There are tons of artists who live in my town including sculptors, painters, drawers, mixed-media artists, photographers and many more. I heard about an art contest which was open to anyone within a 75 mile radius of my town. I was excited to enter. Afterall, It was my first competition. I could enter two pieces and knew exactly which two pieces to select.
When I walked into the public library I was shocked that so many artists were there. I felt like I was in heaven. I was looking at everyone's art and was shocked. It was so.... average. What happened? I was expecting prime rib and I got rump roast! The library soon became filled with cookie-cutter paintings of landscapes and scenery. Most of them looked identical.

What happened to traditional art? I'm not here to judge any certain style or catergory of it, but has the quality diminished? Are we just getting impatient and not willing to spend the hours that traditional art demands? Has money taken over our ability to create? I don't understand...

When I think of an artist, I think of somebody who pours their heart and soul into a piece. They don't do it for the money or anything else for that matter. They create for the sake of creating. Are we losing that?

I'll leave you with this. Somebody recently told me that the most inspired art strives in the most stifling of societies. Will your art be the one that shines through?

People like the pictures that don't have to make you think nowadays. Landscapes you look at and go, "oh! This must be art, I've seen it all before. I won't look like an idiot if I reward it". And so on. If you make something that makes people not have to think, you've won a battle but probably disappointed yourself.

Art is more than just a visual stimulus. It's about an emotional reaction to a piece. I think if people would take a deeper look, they would find a greater appreciation for art.

"God's the real artist, I just hold the pencil."
~TheGuyTheStreet:iconTheGuyTheStreet: Dec 12, 2007, 9:28:42 PM
I agree with you whole heartedly to start off. I have a theory that most are afraid to look into themselves and understand what they are looking at. Emotions are inside and with how things are nowadays (That sounds rather vague...) one tiny drop of emotion could set people into a tail spin. Off topic...

Another look could be that you set the bar too high? Though I do agree, landscapes are dull. If I wanted to see such a thing I would look out a window. I understand that this art took quite a while, it's just that imagination is better then reality...

It is a pity that some forms of art these days aren't as good of quality, but you've got to remember there are those out there, that when you find them, can break your heart with the achieved detail and soul of the artwork, sometimes that makes up for everything else...

What a shame.. I can totally understand the roller coaster ride your emotions would have been on that day. I think being involved in a huge gallery like that would of felt incredible!. Then to see all the same forms of art-work would of been a huge disappointment. I agree with what you are saying about putting emotion into your art-work and what a difference it makes to a piece when you are actually "feeling" your work instead of just plain working, so to speak. I know I am still really considered a beginner in my level of art-work on here (as now I am doing digital art and I am used to traditional pencil art) but I do feel that my progress is very apparent and I believe it is because of the passion and love I have for my art-work. Each piece I do I feel I have improved a little more.

Anyway, to wrap this up, all I am saying is, There ARE still people out there who do have love, compassion and inspiration for Art, it's just not as commonly seen these days. As it is, a lot of the people in this world now have become greedy and material things(needs and wants) take over and numb the soul :(

P.S. I absolutely adore your art-work..I am very much a new admirer.. I just stumbled accross it yesterday when reading some lovely kind words you had commented to someone else's drawing. Pleased to meet you   :blowkiss:

I just believe that art have its own meanings for each individuals, and you might think of me as shallow because of it, but there are also new learners of art and those are the ones that you probably met at the library by then. Have you asked one by one for how long they have been in this 'art world'? I never got art to fail me, for I believe every person have it own thinking way about art and that's all I need to know. If I don't like it, the end. My own taste and their own taste. My own knowledge and their own knowledge. My own art and their own art.

I do agree with each to their own personal tastes/preferences also. We do not have to like everything that is out there. I think that is the beauty of art in itself, that we ARE all individuals and we all have seperate minds and talents. It very much would be a dull and boring place if we all thought alike and liked everything the same.

I don't know if I'm one to go on about it, as I hardly ever spend more than a few days on one work. So maybe I'm not one of the most patient artists.

But I wholeheartedly agree with the predictability of most trad stuff. That is one thing I try to overcome as good as I can. I find it dull when people don't put their mind and heart to the work, but just paint/draw/whatever what they're "supposed to".

F- it! You can do whatever you want to or need to do. And that's where the best stuff comes from.
