Ever since I became a Film Gallery Director, I thought about making a series of interviews to those artists whose film works have really impressed me one way or another.
Talented artists, intersting people.
Today we're exposing: =yanjin
- Why film? What led you to this industry?
- When I was a teenager, I was spending all my time on drawing comics (trying, I should say) and when I saw the teaser of Nikita (the 4th film of
Luc Besson - The Professional, the 5th Element, The Big Blue, etc) I just realized that it was what I wanted to do. Then I quit with the engineer studies I started (only a preparation year before entering the University) and made a first year in a small movie school before passing the exams to try enter the national movie school. I had the chance to succed and followed the "image" classes for 4 years (learning to use camera and light)
- How many years have you dedicated thus far to filmmaking?
- I finished the school in 1995
- What was the first film you ever made and what was your role in its production?
Are you still showing it?
-If it is the first time I ever worked on a film, it was in 1990 and it was a movie school film on which I cooked (poor crew ! )
If it's the first film I "directed" it was also in 1990 in the first movie school I did. And I don't have any copy of it (hopfully
- What is the longest time you've ever spent on a film?
- The longest shooting was one month, I was set electrician on a feature.
The longest time I spend on a whole production was a few month on a documentary I directed. The story of an Italian puppeteer who now lives and works in Taiwan.
- What scene or sequence in any of your films presented to biggest challenges?
Why?
-Until now, I would say it was on the music video of Victoria Tibblin. Not one perticular scene but the whole preparation : 3 weeks to prepare an entire film : find the location, prepare the set, build the furniture, create the cloth, prepare the storyboard, find the crew, the actors, etc... I'm still quite amazed we could do it in such a short time with a "no budget" budget. And I would say it's quite amazing too we could find a whole team of about 30 people who could come on such a short notice to help us for free !
- What inspires you?
Too many things, too many films, too many people ! Asian movies, British humor, spaghetti westerns, life, friends and foes...
- Do you have any funny anecdote (something that happened while making any of your films) to share with us?
In smakelijk, as the cast was vegetarian, I had to eat and chew these huge pieces of mutton. I like to eat mutton but cold mutton is really disgusting !
- What other art mediums do you explore?
- Photography
- Describe yourself as an individual, in three words.
- Love is everything
- Would you be interested in participating in a live chat with our community at some point?
- Why not ?
- What is your advice to people who just begin/are taking their first steps in the filmmaking world?
- Whaou ! That's the toughest question ! Don't give up, keep on trying... Follow your instinct and be yourself
- Since coming to deviantART, what do you think of it here as far as the site itself and the future of film and animation?
Great ! Really nice ! Quite amazing the quality you can find... And at the same time, open to everyone. Really, if this site did not exist we would definitely have to create it ! Damn better that these nonsense myspace or facebook...
- Can you make three choices of our gallery to feature?

Amazing ! Even madder than me...

Great parody and very good main character !

Nice to see this kind of film in cartoon !
-Thank you, Fred. Hope to see more shorts from you soon!

Never be afraid to try something new. Remember that a lone amateur built the Ark.
And a large group of professionals built the Titanic.
Very interesting interview, especially the fact how people who're in the film industry manage to do a good film with "no budget", and I'm always amazed by their willingness to success and to do the job properly... And to be honest, I laughed my ass off on the mutton part
Anyway, great job guys, well done
