Google Project 10 to the 100

¢mindfuckx:iconmindfuckx: reports, September 25
"At Google, we don't believe we have the answers, but we do believe the answers are out there. Maybe in a lab, or a company, or a university -- but maybe not.

Maybe the answer that helps somebody is in your head, in something you've observed, some notion that you've been fiddling with, some small connection you've noticed, some old thing you have seen with new eyes.
If you have an idea that you believe would help somebody, we want to hear about it. We're looking for ideas that help as many people as possible, in any way, and we're committing the funding to launch them. You can submit your ideas and help vote on ideas from others. Final idea selections will be made by an advisory board."

Google will donate a $10 million sponsorship to the top 5 ideas.

Turn to linux! Choose UBUNTU! Run windows apps to!

~xeodesign:iconxeodesign: reports, December 15, 2007
Uhm, thinking about making a leap to LINUX???

I dont blame you, because i did :D

Windows is soo old now. Who wants an old system? Windows Vista is just rubbish and XP's support is being discontinued. So, i think linux is the best. :D

I lately install the latest verion of ubuntu onto my laptop.
" WOW! " was my FIRST reaction!!!!
The effects were B .... E .... A .... UTIFUL!!! (bea-utiful) :D.. The effects were sweet and the speed was outstanding.

This news post was originally a reply to a comment i had on one of my deviation uploads, but i spent so much time writing it, i thought i'd share it with you lot!!

AIMED TO PEOPLE WHO HAVENT GOT LINUX OR TO PEOPLE WHO HAVE LINUX BUT NOT UBUNTU :D :D :D :D :D

I have upload a PDF with loads of screenshots of my ubuntu desktop to my deviantart. SEE IT HERE : [link] . I have themed mine :D

Most window programs can be ran on linux with a program called 'wine'. If you install ubuntu, it is very easy to install wine with something call synaptic package... What wine does, is emulate a windows system disk drive by having the 'windows directory', programs files etc.... As im a new user, i dont know the full capability of wine, so read up about it on their website (google it :d)

I recently made the leap to linux, i used to be a windows user. But as soon as i experienced the new ubuntu (7.10 gusty) i was amazed. The effects are sweat, the interface is brill..

Do remember, i themed mine. For original screenshots see : [link]

Even the unthemed ubuntu is sweet!!!

You can get all of the desktop effects with a program called 'compiz fusion'.

For windows games, i have heard most windows games can also run on wine. Im yet to try this but i need a new hard drive as im only running on a 5gb atm..

So wine saves the day. I cannot wait for my new hard drive, i will try and install photoshop. And im very sure the Macromedia suite will work a treat!

For installing linux programs, it can be fairly easy. Im new to unix so i use the 'synaptic package...' You can search for a software, select it and it will automattically download and install it. If its not in the resposaries (cant spell it), then you wont be able to download and install it the easy way. But you usally get instructions with the software (and they can be very easy to use)..

If you have difficulty with wine, you can use a free virtual machine on linux to run windows. Usally on windows you have to pay for the VM's workstations (such as vmware), but there are free ones for linux (as i have used before).. Theres a whole site with gnome software here : [link] .

Dell is now also install Ubuntu 7.10 onto their systems. And theres a worldwide computer manufacturing company called 'System76' which build ONLY Ubuntu systems (and ubuntu server systems). Found here: [link]

Windows Vista was a terrible change for windows and all over the net i hear 'windows users change to linux'. I have also heard Microsoft is losing sales ever since they discontinued the support for Windows XP. I believe Ubuntu (one of 454 linux distros) will RULE COMPUTERS. There are SOO many Ubuntu users. Ever since Windows Vista was publicized, Ubuntu's website was upgraded and now looks really really professional. Ubuntu knows their the best and windows users know it aswell. All Ubuntu needs is advertisement and windows is gone! Haha Bill Gate$! Shuvin dat in his face...

HAHA

BUT REMEMBER

If your thinking about making the jump to ubuntu, make sure you completly understand that ubuntu is not windows at all.

I hope you do make the change to ubuntu, i dont want you to miss out...

I think ubuntu is the BEST linux disto.

Too finish the talk about ubuntu:
My ubuntu laptop never ever crashes! It has intel celeron M and 1GB ram. I enabled ati acelleration (ati radeon 200m) and its real fast now!. I also recently install a free multiplayer online game called 'alien 3d' :d, its ok. The graphics are very good.

:D

Hoping again!

BTW, Wish you a nice Christmas! :D

I have upload a PDF with loads of screenshots of my ubuntu desktop to my deviantart. SEE IT HERE : [link] . I have themed mine to make :D

QUOTE "plus it would take ubuntu about 5 years to reach the hradware and software ful compatibility"

Could you give me a link to proof?

Dont say things you cant backup, theres no proof to this. Linux has a huge driver database. For an example, i can plug a wireless device into a ubuntu box and it will start working straight away, Thats NO installation.

:D

I work with both windows and linux :D

Unfortunately, you'll run into problems soon enough. :)
Don't get me wrong, Linux is awesome. But there are still a lot of major issues, such as missing drivers, lack of software, etc. Especially on the gaming field, Linux is far behind. Not that it can't handle games, it's just that there are few to none games available for Linux.

And wine... to be honest, I've had nothing but bad experiences with it. ^^

But, if you can live with those problems, it's damn worth it. Welcome to the Linux community!

lol

What system do you use?

Ive installed ubuntu, lets say, around 30 times in the past couple of months. Mabe more.

Ive trialed loads of linux distros, and i find ubuntu the best, so im using it.. Check my latest deviantion for a screenshot of my LINSTA Ubuntu :D.

Wine works well, on good system configurations. Im getting a amd sempron 3300+ :S very shortly with 1gb ram. It has good nvidia graphics (suprise lol) so im expecting games to run smoothly. GTA VC runs on wine. I had it working, but it was running at something like 1FS lol. But it has got a VERY bad graphics card and only a 800MHZ processor with 256 sdram. so yer lol.

Ubuntu rules though :D Come on linux :D

Btw, im a young pc tech, and know everything about windows. Well mostly everything. So im exploring linux now. I started with linux at the age of 12. So im getting pretty familiar with it now. (fourteen now :D).

Anyway, let me know what system your running, it'll be interesting if you've kept with linux. :D.

I'm currently using Ubuntu for the support (I need it, being the only person in school using Linux) but I'm thinking of switching to Debian or Gentoo. I need to be able to run the latest and greatest software, and Ubuntu only delivers outdated versions. Gentoo is the best for that, but I heard it's pretty hard to install.

Sorry for the slow reply.

You switched from 98? Thats a big switch.

Are you sure your system is able to run Ubuntu properly?

TO get the full experience, you should have a better system.

You can buy new dells with Ubuntu pre-installed. :D
