The first anime was made in 1907. So that is making it 100 years old this year. It was a 1 minute clip of a sailor writing japanese, standing up, and then giving a salute. He was a preview for movies in Japan.
Japanese anime was influenced by the most famous cartoonist in America, Mr. Walt Disney. His drawings of Steamboat Willy influenced many of Japan's early artists of anime.
Anime didn't begin on it's own until the 1960's through the influence of the famous Osamu Tezuka.
The first full-length anime series was Astro Boy, which is still on today as reruns.
There was a time before now where anime was outrageously popular. It was called the "Golden Age of Anime". This lasted in Japan from 1960's to 1980's. Unlike Japan, America still has a deep "Golden Age of Anime" that seems to still be growing faster and faster. Some of these growing animes are Pokemon, Naruto, and DragonBall Z, which are the most famous animes in the United States!
Interesting. I remember astroboy. I watch a lot of anime too. My "golden age of anime" started about 2 and a half years ago. Here's a list of all of the anime I've watched: Link

I did a whole 6 page paper on the history of anime. It's very interesting. I found that the guy who came up with Astro Boy, Osamu Tezuka, loved the really big eyes in the movie Bambi and watched it over and over. He believed that the large eyes conveyed better expression. That's why lots of anime today have characters with large eyes.

The guitar is a musical instrument with ancient roots that is used in a wide variety of musical styles. It typically has six strings, but four, seven, eight, ten, and twelve string guitars also exist.

They were remaking Astroboy and a saw a bit of it.. it was great, I wonder why they stopped. D: Or maybe they just stopped showing it in the US. *sad*
I was fairly certain that Astroboy was the first anime. It made sense.

It was quite shiny and still very Tezukaish.
I just found out there's a CG Astro Boy movie coming out in like '09 or something.
