Community Features Vol 6

^misskittyoooo:iconmisskittyoooo: reports, January 3

What the heck is this?

This newsletter is a community chosen selection of deviants and deviations. They are the selections exclusively from the community and featured exactly as they were suggested. The reason for this is to show you what the community is doing and looking at in the hopes to help widen your range of friends and watchers. This is also so that features aren't always chosen by the same group of people. Everyone is allowed to suggest; including suggesting oneself, so that a large web of features are created. This brings together diverse and unique artwork in one location, instead of being scattered about.
This is all galleries across Deviantart!
Previous Issues: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

How can you be included

Send a note to ^misskittyoooo with the subject "Community Feature"
with the deviants name and 3-5 picks from their gallery in this format (can be any gallery):

You will be added to a database of selections and featured in order I receive them.

Well, so much for free speech and an open expression of ideas and opinions in this News item.

Theres free speech, and then theres belittling and abuse to other members which I will not tolerate. This isn't an article for debate on what art is it's to feature suggestions.

You're saying that people aren't allowed to give their opinion on the art you've featured if their opinion disagrees with yours?

These aren't MY opinions, if you read the top there this is a community feature (as the title suggests), selected by the community I only post them, which is why I don't care to hear people belittling them.
People are more than welcome to critique peoples work individually, but I don't want to hear any belittling of the selections on this news article.
Thats not really that big a request.

Regardless of who chose the pieces or why, you're the one featuring them in your News article so they're your features. If you were to feature something that was against dA policy, you would most likely be held responsible for doing so regardless of who originally chose the pieces - because you featured them.

That aside, in dA's Etiquette Policy it states:

We encourage interactivity and we allow comments to be either positive or negative in nature providing that they remain constructive and promote a worthwhile dialogue.

Your statement - If you do not like the selection please keep it to yourself. - seems to go against that policy. As does telling people that they cannot complain about the art you've featured.

Personally, I have no problem with the art you've featured. What bothers me is your attempt to stifle open communication concerning that art.

I don't stifle anything except belittling.
Nowhere did I say discussions cant happen, but generalized negative comments about a selection do not "promote a worthwhile dialogue" nor are they "constructive".
The artwork is linked, so comments on the individual's art is one thing, but generalized statements in a negative manner are quite another.

And the only one responsible for art against policy is the artist who posted it. If someone were to note me and say one is against policy and they reported it, I would remove it from the article no problem. Public accusations would not be acceptable.

You can take my statements in whatever manner you like, and skew them to be as negative as you want them to be. It doesn't change the fact that I wont tolerate generalized negative statements about the selection. They aren't constructive, and they are not community friendly.

According to dA's policies,

We encourage interactivity and we allow comments to be either positive or negative in nature providing that they remain constructive and promote a worthwhile dialogue.

That means the following:

People are entitled to their opinions - be they negative or positive.
People are allowed to post their opinions about the art you've featured - be they negative or positive.

Both negative and positive comments can be constructive and both can promote a worthwhile dialogue and that is why dA allows both types of comments to be posted.

To say otherwise is simply not correct according to dA policy.

You've used the term "generalized negative statements". You insist that they can't be constructive or promote a worthwhile dialogue. And you say that they are not permitted to be posted. I find nowhere in dA's policies where it states that such is the case. In fact, I find the opposite to be true and that dA allows the posting of negative comments because it believes that they can indeed be both constructive and promoting of worthwhile dialogue. If they weren't, dA policies would state that the posting of negative comments is prohibited.

In my opinion, to state that negative comments may not be posted under your News article violates dA policy and discourages open discussion and freedom of expression and speech - values which dA holds in high regard.

(Please note that I do not post this reply as a personal attack on you or your character and that in fact, I hold you in high regard. I just strongly dislike censorship and I feel that you are attempting to censor people from posting their true feelings about your selections in your News article where those selections are featured. Thus, I felt the need to speak out about your News comments. If I have angered, upset, or frustrated you by continuing with this dialogue then I apologize, for that was not my intent.)

Had I said "If you dislike the art selected..." I might agree with you, but I didn't, so I don't.
Asking people not to belittle others is not, and never will be censorship. Censorship is something people always screams, but I don't think anyone knows what it means anymore.
Constructive comments would never be viewed as belittling or bad and I don't discourage them on the artwork itself. But this community has shown how constructive it' generalizations have been in the past 5+ years I've been here and I wont encourage that here. I do know that disclaimers like that do help prevent the spread of such negativity and I will continue to use it on this article until a time when common courtesy doesn't need constant reminders.

Yes, you actually are starting to frustrating me, to be brutally honest. You are making half baked accusations at me that I am breaking policy, which I am not anywhere near doing.
You are skewing one line of a larger whole to make a big deal out of essentially nothing. It's nit picky pointless agitation.

In fact, I really don't know why I replied in the first place, and I wont indulge this pointlessness anymore.
I hold no ill will to you at all, and I don't take your comments personally but there really is no point in continuing this conversation.
Have a good day and happy new year =)
