It is more than just that! It is a creature, which despite popular belief, is clean and affectionate. Rats are commonly misperceived as disgusting, raggedy, and vicious - this is formed by past events which were falsely reported. Unlike mice, rats are said to smell less as well are considered a lot more sociable while mice might play on you and around you, rats will also play with you as well as around you and on you. Rats are much larger than a mouse, but are commonly called mice by those whom are merely taking a glance at them. Rats ears are smaller in size than a mouses ears, compared to the size of their head. Rats are also considered far more intelligent than a mouse, and as stated before interact better with humans. However, despite all of this proven information people still do not think honestly about rats, because, usually the truth is not told to them. They only get to hear the myths and rumors which have been spread through legends, and wrongly reported news articles.
Rats lifespan ->
Usually, depending on the type, is around 2-3 years.However, this all depends on how well you care for your pet - remember that healthy pets usually last longer. Rats are known for getting respiratory problems, as well as getting tumors and due to their small size it is hard for vets to fix these problems. Taking good care of your pet and providing the most healthy of environments will reduce the risk of your rat getting ill.
Size of Rats ->
The size of rats vary depending on their breed type, the average length of a rat is anywhere from 8-11 inches and their tail length usually is 7-9 inches long. However, as stated before it depends on breed as well as gender.
Rat life stages ->
Rats are born after a 21-28 day gestation period, although a normal term would be 22-23 days in length. Baby rats open their eyes from around 13-16 days after being born, while they can hear and smell only a couple days after being born. Baby rats will suckle from their mother until they are four weeks old. Mother rats normally will leave a litter of pups at around 6 weeks, but they are full weaned at 4-5 weeks. Rats reach puberty at a very young age (around 6-8 weeks), however they should not be bred this young so making sure that you remove your rats and separate them by gender when breeding is crucial. Females go into heat every 4-5 days (24 hour periods) and may be very aggressive or irritable at that point in time, rats will stop growing at 12-14 weeks.
Rats as Pets ->
Rats make wonderful pets, they are clean, intelligent and form bonds with their owners much like a dog would do. Rats become very attached to their owners, they are very affectionate and can even be taught to do tricks. They need a constant stream of attention, or they can become very lonely and even sadly die due to lack of social contact. They need hours of care, and if you cannot provide such an environment then getting a second rat could be a good idea. However, just getting another rat will not be enough to ensure that your animal will be human friendly, it is a good idea to handle your pet rat and if you get a friend for it to do the same for both.
