What is this?
This is the second installment of articles, written for
Artisan Crafts Month, which introduce the Artisan Crafts sub-galleries by talking about what they are, how to do work within them, and featuring artwork from the galleries. In this edition I will be talking about the
Culinary Arts Gallery!
What is Culinary Arts?
Definition from dA Gallery Description:
Edible art; food and drink presented as art that is purely edible
or is enhanced with non-edible objects.
The meaning of this should be clear by the title of the gallery, as
well as the description listed above. In this gallery we can see
anything from a dinner course to a seafood cocktail appetizer, and it
all deals with food and drink. Anything edible that the user
themselves made is accepted into this gallery.
Tools of the Trade
Here are some common tools in which you can use while creating your

Thumb:
Why is this a good Culinary Arts piece?
This artist is perhaps one of the most popular Culinary Artists on deviantART, and it's all for one reason: they know what the hell they are doing (and, oh yeah, their food looks delicious!) This well presented photograph of a very well created cake shows us what should be in the Culinary Arts gallery. You might also want to take a stroll into this artist's gallery for more. ;]

Tomazz
Thumb:
Why is this a good Culinary Arts piece?
A black background that shows off the delicate elements that lay within the food itself. This artist takes time to make sure that his pieces are extraordinarily well executed, as well as showcasing the food perfectly. For that he should be looked up to in the Culinary Arts community!

Why is this a good Culinary Arts piece?
This shows us that it's all about the drinks as well. Doesn't it look good?

Why is this a good Culinary Arts piece?
I believe that this Pumpkin Carving shows the diversity that is to be found in this gallery. It's a well executed carving with intricate details.

I found a miscat! What do I do?
That's easy! Whenever you think you have found a miscategorization, there is one crucial thing that you need to do. Go to the deviation page, and in the Artist's Description box you will see a link titled, "Report Policy Violation" (It is located under the Picture information / Thumb code box). Go here, and click "Miscategorization" in the drop-down menu located next to the 'Type of Violation' section. In the 'Comment' section you will want to take the time to tell the Artisan Crafts Gallery Director (^
Myana) why it does not belong, and why it should be moved. Let her know a possible new home (category) for it, and any information that might be helpful to her in the process of dealing with the Miscat.
You can see how this could be done here:

Back to the presentation of the food - I believe that with Culinary Arts on dA, if you see a piece of food or drink that looks appetizing you have to assume that it is, as you the viewer can not take a bite out of the food itself. It is all about how the food looks, how it is photographed, and the appeal the overall piece has in terms of visuals.
I am not sure if you have seen ~pinkcakebox's work, but I have, and I have to say that it looks like it's been done by someone who knows what they are doing. She also attends a school for Culinary Artists which leads me to believe she knows what she is doing. I, myself, am not a culinary artist and do not know the techniques that are involved with creating Cakes. If you are wondering just how she does her work perhaps it would be pertinent for you to contact her about it - I'm sure she could lend you a hand.
These articles are more about educating what belongs in the categories talked about on dA, not exactly how to do work within them. In some of the articles I have put tutorials that can be found on and off dA, but those come few per category, and sometimes none at all. Perhaps an initiative should be made to get the top Artisan Crafts artists on dA to create tutorials for all of us to wonder about, read, enjoy. But, these things take time, and sometimes people just don't have that time. I do assure you, though, that when a tutorial was provided on dA - or I could find a good resource off of dA - I tried to provide it in these articles.
Hopefully you are not as confused now, and if you are, I am more than happy to further explain to you anything you may not understand.

It takes only a minute to get a crush on someone, an hour to like someone, and a day to love someone, but it takes a lifetime to forget someone

You are missing my point. Explain what it is that people are doing that is correct, don't just say, "Hey look! These people are doing things right!" If you really want to educate people, then educate them. You use a very interesting phrase: "which leads me to believe" meaning that here you are writing an article when, in truth, you don't really know what makes a good piece of culinary art, you can only assume by things you have seen on dA and impressions you receive from the artwork. Now, there is nothing wrong with that--nothing at all--but it doesn't helo educate me or anyone else what those good things might be.
If Culinary Arts on dA is all about presentation, then that is fine. I, too, believe that is the case. However, your article in no way makes that clear. What I understand here is that you are trying to do a very good thing--and it is a very good thing--but you are doing it with limited knowledge. I would like to see this artices actually have something about them that educates instead of just showcases, features, and tell people "this is good" without any concrete explanation for it.
