Artisans and Functional Art - June 2009

^Kitten-of-Woe:iconKitten-of-Woe: reports, July 8
This is the fifth in this series that features art by members of the Artisan Crafts gallery that I feature daily in one of my journal modules. I add one each day and each is featured for 24-48 hours and then all are featured at the beginning of the next month as a group. These artisan works are found through my casual browsing and they could be very recently uploaded or they could be older works. They could have been made by very well-known artisans, by someone still unknown, or by someone very new to dA. They are random finds, so one gallery might be represented more than another and one artist might get featured more than once in the same month. My picks are totally random finds and that which struck me as something wonderful... I hope you think so, too, and that you enjoy this new series!

AC Month Spotlight On: Jewelry!

`lazybutt:iconlazybutt: reports, January 13, 2008

What is this?

This is the fourth installment of articles, written for Artisan Crafts Month, which introduce the Artisan Crafts sub-galleries by talking about what they are, how to do work within them, and featuring artwork from the galleries. In this edition I will be talking about the Jewelry Gallery!

What is Jewelry?

Definition from deviantART Gallery Description:

All types of jewelry regardless of medium, and includes earrings, necklaces, bracelets, charms, and even keychains.

We all know what Jewelry is, and I believe that the definition above explains it nicely. Jewelry is dictionary.com defined as "any ornaments for personal adornment, as necklaces or cuff links, including those of base metals, glass, plastic, or the like." Anything that is worn on your body besides clothes themselves could be considered as jewelry.

General Resources

Show me some examples!

Artist: :icony4g3r: ~Y4G3R
Thumb:

Why is this a good Jewelry piece?
I believe that this piece shows the innovative quality that Jewelry can show, as well as being completly functional! This artist not only has impressive detailing, but many a great pair of shades for us to droll over.

Artist: :iconmandy-wu: *mandy-wu
Thumb:

Why is this a good Jewelry piece?
This piece shows the creative quality to a photograph that can enhance the jewelry fully. Taking a look at this piece grabs your attention and makes you want to see more than just the jewelry, but at the same time makes you want to put it around your neck.

Artist: :iconchatnoir13: *ChatNoir13
Thumb:

Why is this a good Jewelry piece?
I believe that here we see a beautiful piece that is accompanied by beautiful photography which shows us so many details we get a sense of how much work went into the ring. Great photography can increase a piece's feel tenfold.

There are many more great examples, which you can see for yourself here!

Do you have any resources?

Here are some dA tutorials I've found that might help you Jewelers out there!

Fortune Cookie Charm Tutorial, by *tedsie
This colorful and fun tutorial will help you in the process of making a charm. As well as in depth descriptions of what happens step after step, the artist goes into detail via pictures that show you how to do the steps mentioned.

Beading Technique, by ~kaileighblue
A simple to follow, simple to understand tutorial shows us how to form a wonderful pattern using beads and string.

Wire working basics, by =Attackfish
A tutorial which goes into depth about metals that are good for wire working, as well as techniques that you can use to master wire!

I found a miscat! What do I do?

That's easy! Whenever you think you have found a miscategorization, there is one crucial thing that you need to do. Go to the deviation page, and in the Artist's Description box you will see a link titled, "Report Policy Violation" (It is located under the Picture information / Thumb code box). Go here, and click "Miscategorization" in the drop-down menu located next to the 'Type of Violation' section. In the 'Comment' section you will want to take the time to tell the Artisan Crafts Gallery Director (^Myana) why it does not belong, and why it should be moved. Let her know a possible new home (category) for it, and any information that might be helpful to her in the process of dealing with the Miscat.

You can see how this could be done here:

Some things that don't belong in Jewelry:

  • Store bought Jewelry. [Belongs in Photography OR Scraps]

  • Please do not put your jewelry in AC > Misc.! It belongs in the Jewelry category.

I know all I need to know now!

That is it for this edition. Stay tuned for the next edition where I explore Leatherwork!
