Better Digital Photography Magazine-Free online

^kkart:iconkkart: reports, November 26
From the Publishers of "What Digital Camera" and "Amateur Photographer", IPC Media today has announced a new online photography magazine, "Better Digital Photography" that people can read free and fully online, it is also interactive with embedding video tutorials from the magazine and mouse-over tips. Aimed at the entry and intermediate level photographer, it is heavily devoted to equipment and technique-focused photography content.

From the IPC Media website:

Publishing director Alex Robb says: “This is an exciting and innovative new venture for the photo portfolio. The editorial team have worked incredibly hard to create bespoke content, including technique videos and other interactive content. I am delighted that we have secured distribution to around two million photographers to ensure that as many people as possible benefit from the excellent tips and advice. Better Digital Photography is a further indication of how IPC continues to innovate in this competitive sector.”

Editor Mat Gallagher adds: “We wanted to create a product that helps the reader expand their knowledge, while being easy to use. It is thanks to the talents of art editor Steve Crabb that we have managed to produce such a visually stimulating and accessible magazine that surpasses anything else in the market place.”

My thoughts, this is downright awesome and VERY well done, it is like looking at an actual magazine, but the fact that it has videos embedded within for tips, tutorials, and techniques, make this even better! You can also subscribe for free, via email for upcoming issues, make personal notes within the magazine, and download a copy to your hard drive. GO GET IT!

Street Photography: Why not in color?

`Obsidian-Fox:iconObsidian-Fox: reports, January 15, 2008
When you think of street photograpy, Many different shots come to mind, whether they are old classics from back in the day, or right here on deviantART... I bet all of the 'best' shots in your mind are b/w..

Street photography is all about society, capturing the essence of humanity. There are some amazing colors in our world, why not capture them?

Some samples of street photography in color:

(Included is one of mine that i took and posted in color, and one that i had originally posted in b/w, but updated with a color version, specifically for this article)

Many people adopt the purist approach to their street photography. Using techniques, and media most closely resembling that which was used in the past.

Using Henri Cartier Bresson's ideal of composing the shot in camera, not in the darkroom (now photoshop), Modern street photographers opt towards Rangefinder camera's, which are known for being notoriously quiet, allowing them to get closer to their subject without catching their attention with the noisy thwap of an SLR shutter.

Back in the day, color film wasn't available, so by default images were always going to be black and white. Unfortunately however, black and white film is becoming increasingly harder to find, and more expensive, leaving younger and poorer 'students' of the art at a disadvantage.

With all the technology available, imaging programs like photoshop are becoming more and more capable of mimicking the tones in b/w film, more and more people are using digital, shooting in color, and converting their street photos that way.

A street photo doesnt need to be black and white by default to be good, but the majority of superb images you find, will be, for several reasons.

1) Monotone eliminates distracting colors in the background, making your subject the point of interest with very little distractions.
2) Deep and rich tones can add a whole new level of emotion to an image, particularly useful when you want to pull at your viewers heartstrings.

That being said, black and white is the favored choice of a lot of people, but it isn't needed 100% of the time.

Truth be told, I have more black and white :+fav:'s, but as i said, predominantly a b/w genre, but its worth it to think outside the box, and i challenge you to do just that.

Cheers.

YEA,...a challenge..
I really appreciate this article.
I find also that when street images are in colour- it almost feels invasive or propped. Does that make sense?
And at the same time I'll actually keep several images in colour because its the colour in the image that is the reason it got my attention. I don't post them because as you said, folks really lean towards BW when it comes to street....
but i'd like to share one i took recently ---

Ha ha topical article :)

This is a good article as I was wondering why b/w was so predominant in street photography. I understand the reasoning why it was in the past, perhaps color street shots will become more accepted in the future, now that technology is evolving.

Of course we do owe a lot to the past, my favorite photography has been the old Life Magazine stuff. Having said that I prefer to leave my street shots in their original color mode. Unless the b/w can hide some of their flaws ;)

I've always felt that color shots were more honest. I think street photography, more than any other type, was meant to portray things the way they are in real life.

In real life we see color!

A fun article! I have a theory, too, which is that it is easier to ruin color shots than b/w ones during post-work, so even though b/w is a long standing tradition because of the origins of street photography, it is perpetuatione because of preference and because it is just easier to get it right with b/w. That said, I love color street photography, too, and people and programs are only going to get better at working with digital color!

I never got why people only shot b&w for this category. Cartier-Bresson didn't HAVE color film to shoot with.

Pretty cool article and photos. I still believe that Street and B&W are made for each other though.

There's nothing to add and I fully admit to you. I should stop pressing the grayscale button. :| I actually know that but I think I have only one colored street photo in my collection. :-&
