"I am Andrew Ryans, and I'm here to ask you a question. Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his brow? 'No!' says the man in Washington, 'It belongs to the poor.' 'No!' says the man in the Vatican, 'It belongs to God.' 'No!' says the man in Moscow, 'It belongs to everyone.' I rejected those answers; instead, I chose something different. I chose the impossible. I chose...Rapture, a city where the artist would not fear the censor, where the scientist would not be bound by petty morality, where the great would not be constrained by the small! And with the sweat of your brow, Rapture can become your city, as well."-BioShock
Ever get tired of people just posting generic "Pretty!" type comments on your photography? So are we! #PhotocritiqueIs a chat room and a community in its entirety that focuses on giving you the truth. We don't condemn of generic comments, and we encourage everyone to look deep into their photos, and what they have to offer.
There are so many different styles out, yet most people only know of one. (Point and shoot) and there is so much more to take into consideration. Anyone can pick up a camera and take a picture of scenery. My 3 year old cousin does that. Which is why we want the community to help each other out, and start critiquing each other. Teach each other new styles, no ways of thinking, a different perspective of what the world of photography has to offer.
Keep in mind; a critique doesn't have to be professional, and to be a critic doesn't mean you know everything there is to know about photography. A critique comes from the heart, on what you saw and felt on the photo. Break a critique into two parts.
- 1. The generic comment. Don't be afraid to tell people what you liked about their photo, but tell them why. Tell them why that piece you thought was so great actually affected their photo, or why you thought it was great.
- 2. Second, Tell them the truth, tell them what you first thought of the photo. Tell them what you "Might" have done differently. Different angle, perspective, object, etc!
Key thing is, don't be afraid of someone getting mad at you because you're providing them with a piece of advice.

Thank you so much for this article... I hope a majority of dA members read this one... I even put on every photo that "Advance critique encouraged" and rarely do I get one... The main reason I even joined was to get critiqued so I could learn from others and get different ideas and perspectives from other photographers... I just got an amazing critique from someone today... It was long, detailed, to the point and really made me think long and hard about where I wanted my photography to go next...
Thanks again... Photocitique Rocks...

I logged on to devART today and read this piece of news and I thought, "Wow, in depth opinions on photographs." So I joined in on the critique in the chat and when it came time for one of my photos to be critiqued, more than one person had suggestions. I responded to them in a totally appropriate fashion, not getting offended, I just stated that I liked my photo, and asked questions on how to improve. The founder of this chat, =XtremeDezigns, then made a statement telling me I need to just accept their opinions, and take their suggestions, since they were polite about it. As if I wasn't polite about it, as if I needed instruction on how to take criticism. I really didn't appreciate the founder of this chat implying that I was being rude in some way, or innappropriate. I was singled out, even though the way I behaved in the chat was what I thought was expected: I really tried to give advanced criticism, I stayed on topic, I accepted criticism and even asked people questions so they could give me more feedback. And yet, I'm the one who needs to be told how to act in a critique? Thanks a lot *Photocritique, that's one person you've alienated.

`karemelancholia is one of the most genuine deviants you could ever met. Always active and a true deviantART cheerleader and supporter in every aspect. You can always count on her to lend a hand or get involved, and you usually will find her doing large amounts of both at any given moment. She's consistently reports on contests around dA, showcases the efforts of her fellow artists and shows her charitable side through various activities. Besides all of this, she's a truly talented artist which is why she's an obvious choice for deviousness this month. Read More
