About gear: the Gorillapod

~Nikonist:iconNikonist: reports, January 20, 2008
Calling all land-hoppers, photographers and other picture enthusiasts! Joby Gorillapod presents to you the new age of tripods. Based on the original and popular metal/titanium/carbon-fiber/etc. tripods, the Joby Gorillapod makes timered-shooting much easier. Taken from the name of the large primate itself, this rubberized baby resembles the long arms of the specie. But unlike the 140-160 kilogram gorilla, this flexible tripod only weighs a maximum of three kilograms. It can be wrapped around any object; from pencils to poles, from arms to trees…you name it!

The Gorillapod is made from high-quality plastic. With 30 or more ball and socket joints, it will surely stay firm and stable even after lots of wrapping-around action. Its rubberized feet and soft rings will definitely keep your camera still.

Due to its varieties, the Gorillapod is fitting for any kind of camera. Whether or not it is a point-and-shoot, determining what kind is just right for you will not be a problem at all.

1) Gorillapod Original- This type is perfect for those who own a Canon SD800 IS, a Fuji Finepix F31 fd, or any kind of compact digital camera for that matter. It weighs a maximum of 275 grams and is as handy as your camera.

[link]

2) Gorillapod SLR- If you own a lightweight SLR or a Video Camera, the Gorillapod SLR is the most fitting for you. With a bulky camera and lens, this tripod lessens the hassle.

[link]

3) Gorillapod SLR ZOOM- Now, if you are using any zoom lenses on your SLR, this is the right choice to make. Although the Gorillapod is small and light, worrying about whether or not it can tolerate heavy cameras would just waste your time because it can handle SLRs weighing up to 6 pounds!

[link]

Now that this review has given you a quick tour around the new innovation, maybe it’s time to say goodbye to the heavy, bulky and cumbersome sticks we all know and say hello to the flexible and long-lasting generation of tripods. Available in 6 different colors, (Namely yellow, red, green, pink, blue and grey) the Gorillapod would probably take over the gigantic tripods of yesterday.

sounds great, but I dunno whether it'd be available in Poland :/ I hope so :)
:icontrippedinahole:
I just received one for Christmas. I was very skeptical at first, but now I do not leave home without it, its small size makes it very convenient, and now it lives in my photo-backpack, with my D80 and batteries, remotes, etc. I highly suggest this little guy for any street shooting, and also nature and landscapes. I find it is much easier to use than carrying around my monopod/tripod because it is so much smaller and requires less fussing.

I've looked at these, and I do agree they do have a special place! At $50 for the heavy duty model though, I would only purchase one if I needed it over a standard tripod.
Personally, I don't do any rock or tree climbing for shots..... I have no worry about weight, as I already have 4 other tripods of varying weight for different requirements.
Quite an interesting concept worth inspection especially if you must travel light!

Very nice presentation!!

Art is like Love, unless it is shared, and viewed by others and appreciated, it has no mutual return, it is empty and hollow, and lonely.
